4th Tarosian Regiment - Devildog

If you've just stumbled across this thread, I'd like to say that the stuff on front page isn't to the same standard as the stuff I'm pouring out in the later pages. Hooray for a year of improvement and progress! I recommend skimming the first pages if not skipping them entirely. smile.png

No, no...no heresy here...

I began them as a Gue'vesa regiment a few months ago, but now that Tau and Guard are no longer friends they're becoming an army in their own right. The Transfers are a bugger to get off, so they're staying on the first tanks.

I am usually not a sucker for yellow, but this looks fairly nice. Makes me think of a desert or light forest environment unit, specializing in those terrains. Decent weathering (though I would do more on the edges). Also I believe the Scions can use some more converting. As the models are, I find the rear a bit empty compared the the top-heavy allocation of things (raised plasma, big shoulders and helmet compared to that tight rear).

Harsh faith...

"Hey those folks have some good points, I think we should ditch the emperor and work with them..."

*sometime later*

"...What do you mean they just left?!"

I've incorporated that into my fluff, yes. After Taros, the Tau left the world to its own devices for the most part aside from a tithe of resources. Functionally speaking, it's just a Guard regiment now.

@Frater

Thanks. This is the first time I've done weathering, so I'm still learning the arts of it. Normally I go for a factory-fresh look on my other models, but I like the idea of gritty, battleworn tanks.

Bro, you are not doing a parade army. Give them some grit ;)

I doubt any self respecting commissar would just stand and watch his men submit to the xenos, following that thought I suspect he is quite safe. ;)

Talking about fluff... for how long were they with tau? Did they inform their suppliers about that or did the xenos leave before they burned any bridges for good?

This is pretty much what happened to mine but I was lucky and did not go down the decal route till I had changed my mind. I had removed the eagle on the helmets but only as the cam scheme looks like a cloth helmet cover.

On the models themselves I agree with Immersturm, they need a bit of dirtying up. Use the sponge technique, nice and easy.

Edit: and its nice to see you on this site too ;)

You should add in some Ultramarines and run all three Unbound with some Tau.  This is 100% official (in the Dornian Heresy alternate universe) and it give you a great excuse to convert some Mk. XVI "Damocles" power armor.  The Ultramarines have skirmishes with the Tau and are incorporating Tau technology into Ultramar Segmentum in order to better fight the Tyranid incursion as well as fight Chaos and the Imperium.  I mean sure there is some concern about how to best incorporate heavy rail gun technology into the Codex Astartes as it was encountered after Guilliman was put into stasis by Fulgrim to prevent him from dying and is now housed on Terra as a trophy.

Now if you want to stay with the official fluff and undo the Tau influence you could cover those Tau markings with Aquilas (those nice plastic bits on the vehicle sprues), equipment, and stowage.  Taking backpacks from the heavy weapons teams, the stowage bits from the vehicles, rolls of gauze tied off with string (camo-netting), jerry cans and crates with string or green stuff straps, and so forth can easily hide all those unwanted transfers, and if you ever see any, unsightly seams.

Hey Elmo, good to see you here, too!

These guys are effectively the Planetary Defense Force for Taros, which after the Taros Campaign has become its own, little empire within the Tau Empire. I imagined that the Tau would allow them to run autonomously and defend themselves from day-to-day threats like pirates, only stepping in to help when something bigger rolls up. It allows me to run them as either a combined force with my Tau or a standalone depending on the needs of the campaign we're starting soon. (We've House Ruled it that Guard are AoC with Tau and Chaos Marines so long as they're themed for it. It doesn't really allow any combos or broken stuff, just lets them be on the same board without jamming up.)

Hence these Guard have no Commissars, Priests or Psykers. I'm toying with getting an Engineer model converted up to represent Techpriests, though I likely won't bother with them either. Also toying with a humanised power-armour soldier for Yarrick. Perhaps like the "Damocles" power armour that Fasha mentioned. It'll be tough to find a good model that balances Tau power armour tech with a human Imperial slant.

I've got another Russ built and mostly painted, if you gentlemen would like to cast your opinions upon it. Still needs work on the finer details though, such as the Searchlight and a couple of touch-ups here and there. Mostly satisfied with it, though. This will be my Pask tank as he was pretty effective when I ran him on Saturday. I wanted it to be a weathered, old war machine, though weathering is still something I'm getting used to. (Hard to decide the right balance.) This is the Regiment's only Vanquisher with a raft of commendations and confirmed tank kills.

Thanks for the tip, Thoqqu, I'll give that a try. (Makes sense to me!)

@WarriorFish

Yeah, the two colours I've used for the most part are Tau Light Ochre and Kislev Flesh, though I dope them both with Runefang Steel which really seems to pastel-ise the colours, and I quite like how it makes them look.

The soldiers have Zandri Dust on their trousers that gets the same treatment as well.

Weathering is better lightly applied at first as it is easy to add more.

Yours is not easy to see as it looks like you have applied silver to some of the edges but without an underlying contrasting colour.

I first apply black then partially cover it with the silver so it looks like the scratch has removed some of the top paint down to the primer and, in some places, down to metal.

You can see what I mean here

You could also use the mud effect for a desert vehicle but use lighter browns to show up as dust. Also the mud would go all around the track and not just at the base due to the splattering as the track links rotate.

Try sponging a light black at the end of the main gun muzzle for smoke stain and you could use thinned burnt umber oil paint for the staining around the rivet, dragging a fine amount of paint down from the rivet as run-off (I have just started doing this and it is a fantastic method).

Remember that weathering is best applied to areas which would wear the most in real life such as hatches, track guards, protruding edges etc and it is worth looking at photos of real vehicles for inspiration and also checking out military modellers magazines for tips.

All small things that add greatly to the effect thumbsup.gif

I'll try out some of those effects and see if I can get good results from them. Time to go dig up some more weathering tutorials, I think!

I'm not sure what you mean by, " the mud would go all around the track and not just at the base due to the splattering as the track links rotate." What do you mean by that?

You have mudded up just the lower hull section. As the track turns around the hull, mud would be deposited all along the hull, front, rear and top with splatter.

You could use these weathering powders - they have one specificallly for sand smile.png

Coffeegrunt, the Damocles power armor is that really sleek looking power armor the Ultramarines in that picture are wearing.  It has strong Tau influences but note that two are armed with pulse rifles as well.

Puppet Wars makes a few good bodies for a Tau Straken in Gue'vesa Crisis Suits.  The Striker Armor is a neat choice and vaguely similar to the Dornian Ultramarines artwork.

Ahhh, I'm seeing it now. I'd thought it was just an old art piece, the artist has really nailed GW's style. (Not sure if it's you, Fasha, but if it is, awesome work!) That's an interesting take on the fluff that I may have to read up on in the future. For now, I'll dig through PuppetsWar. I'd searched Hasslefree, Anvil Industries and a couple of others, so hopefully PW has the right units to suit my style.

Oh...I am so getting a Dragonfly...

Oh nice, an auxiliary Human Tau army!

I love the look of it, that's an excellent tan yellow. Most people can't paint that well, if at all.

I like that you took off the Imperial Eagle, so it makes it look like these guys have had time to be converted into a Tau-dominated world.

My recommendations?

1- The front of tanks seem unfinished and will need the same shading that you did on the broadside of the vehicles, which is shaded very nicely.

2- Buy a Tau Firewarrior box and use some of the equipments and bits, like shoulder pads or even helmets. Tau decal works, but humans are likely the favored auxiliary because Human worlds are probably the most recent addition to the Tau Empire, and likely show the most promise as a fighting force (as opposed to a detachment of Kroot raiders or some Vespid scouts), especially after having seen what the Imperium is capable of.

I would imagine that after a few decades, the Tau would rather issue Gue'vesa regiments with their own weapons, like Plasma rifles that don't blow up and all that nice Gundam-style weaponries.

In fact, why not even have tanks and sentinels bearing weapons seen only on Tau battlesuits? These Tau worlds might not have the factories or Forge Worlds to churn out Leman Russ cannon shells, so why not use Railguns?

Keep it up!

Hey Volsung!

I've actually had models along these lines for a little while now, though the "Sentinel-Sides" need some work, and the Gue'vesa'ui are a bit awkward to field in the current FoC. However, the guys you see here in the Imperial Guard side are Vesa'saal, typical Lasgun-totin' Guardsmen, and Vesa'la, Veterans. The Vesa'ui will be the guys who are equipped to the level of a Fire Warrior. I've added pics below as you seem to be a fan of this setup, I'd like your opinion on them!

All the below are due to be stripped and repainted in the new Taronian 4th colours, as they were experiments from about a year back and don't quite fit in now.

Here's the SentinelSides, I'm still debating which to use to represent them:

...And the Gue'vesa'ui, Humans elevated to a rank sufficient to let them bear Tau weaponry into battle. (The Shoulder pads are a mark of this honour.)
