Had 2 1k games vs the wife using marines today.

First she took a vulcan inspired list, and I used

Ccs, Astro, regimental standard, lascannon.

Platoon,

PCS, Autocannon

Inf 1, G/L and A/C

Inf 2, G/L and A/C

SWS, 2xM/G and Demo

Vets, 2xM/G and H/F in a Chimera M/L and H/B

Armoured sentinel with plasma cannon

Armoured sentinel with plasma cannon

Valkyrie with MRP

Wyvern

Executioner with plasma sponsons.

1k

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140722_111504.jpg

I had first turn, got lucky and the devastators were dead, most of the tacts in the ruin and all that was left by the end of 2nd was the raider, termies and vulkan. So we called it as a fail.

All the guard lost were a few guardsmen and a sentinels plasma cannon.

Next, a sicarious tactical marine experiment list. I used the same list after how successful it was previously.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140722_153342.jpg

And then the scene at the end of turn 1, going well for the guard but had a couple issues like a stunned executioner.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140722_170721.jpg

This is the scene after turn 2, things are going the guards way again but both ccs and pcs are dead.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140722_194206.jpg

At the end of 3 we called it again as the guard had it in the bag and marines were limited to trying to survive with minimal threat ability.

Have I created a rounded effective list with redundancy and strong output?

Any recommendations on how it can be improved?

The first list i think had

Vulkan,

5xL/C termies in a dedicated Redeemer

8xtacts with flamer and MM in a drop pod.

7xtacts with flamer and combi melta.

4×MM devastators plus sgt.

Second had

Sicarious

9xsternguard C/M and C/F and H/F in a pod

10 x Tacts with M/M, M/G and gained scout from sicarious

7 x tacts with Flamer and P/W

4x M/L devastators 2xFlakk and sgt.

I went first in the first game, and the firepower was devastating, accurate and her saves were poor.

Second game I stole initiative and then her army had its ass in the breeze and once again I only rolled maybe 4 scatter misses all game.

I was extremely lucky with my rolling.

Only things that weren't very effective were the infantry squads but I don't know what to drop to get them more effective.

Your list will murder marine armies in the open but might struggle against faster lists like bikes and such.

I don't know why she quit in the first game if she still had the big box full of hate on the table. That redeemer and termis can almost table you by itself with a bit of luck. The game really wasn't over. Your best threat to her was just one veteran squad.

Hmm, I don't think the first list is a great one - but it's all relative. It's a moot point though as the Emperor was with you, with such a blessing all other things count for little. If your wife is looking for advice (feel free to pass this on... or not :P ) Marines can do well on the cheap - this is how I prefer them as it lets them take on horde opponents like Guard better. My Marines don't have too much trouble with Guard and it's mostly my Tacs that win the day! Get close and Guard will struggle, which is why I always recommend a Guard army is prepared for this ;)

Speaking of which, that's how I like my infantry squads so perhaps that might be worth a try for you? Scurrying around with a flamer is cheap but quite effective, plus they'll be able to intercept aggressive units that threaten your more valuable units.

I still had a sentinel and the russ rocking and once she de-bussed and murdered one squad she thought that she would just die and fail every saving throw.

I agree I may struggle with bikes but I'm not sure what to change to conpensate for that

I agree that the first list is weak, we spoke after and she wanted to make the most of the flamer/melta rules buff from salamanders.

I will pass on the advice about marines, though she likes assault and carving me up so its trying to find a working assault list.

As for my squads, do you mean infantry with a flamer? What would you change to fit them in and would you add a priest/inq?

Assault works well for Marines, it's how I usually beat Guard - shooting, flaming and assault infantry and kraking tanks. Simple but effective, especially with Drop Pods :)

I run my ISs cheap, flamers let them dish out some hurt at a bargain price and it lets you get more squads in. They're the workhorse unit that protects, intercepts and bogs the enemy down in numbers. They don't often do that much damage, but they help win games by holding the enemy off such I can manoeuvre other units to exploit this. Ideally your opponent's main concern will be "how can I get past the Guardsmen defensive line to reach X that is murdering my army?" :D

Ok I like it, maybe I will use a flamer in each squad instead of a grenade launcher, as I like the autocannon even if just stripping a hull point off of something while the torches are out of range.

Shame as I like the idea of the G/L just never find it useful enough.

sorry i don't know more.

Here are some pics of my reserves and how i deployed. I won deployment and then first turn. and it was the mission on the maelstrom missions where there are 6 objectives. We also house ruled taking all cards out that cannot be achieved in the game to make gameplay better.

This is the CCS in the vendetta and a vet squad in the Valk.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_194635.jpg

Here are the vets that are riding in the chimeras.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_194658.jpg

The deployment was table corners, and knowing he had pods and wanting to protect the tanks, i bunched up as much as i could without a infantry bubble. I thought i had done quite well.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_194722.jpg

Here is a close up of my deployment, including the vets in the woods.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_194738.jpg

This is a Close up of the suicidal/advancing contingent until the air support arrived.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_194751.jpg

And into the game we go,

Pask surveyed the scene in front of him and was curious as to when the wolfs would turn up. Without a target in sight he ordered the flanking contingent forward at full speed to go and grab objectives while the chance was there. He then moved his tank to protect a flank not quite covered incase of drop pod attack. The veterans in the woods noted that their objective had been boobytrapped, requested to move to a safe distance from it while still being close enough to hold it, he granted them permission.

All of a sudden 2 pods came crashing down nearby, 1 in front of the veterans holding the rigged objective in the trees and the other came down in the one spot he hadn't anticipated one coming down on the trees between him and the new Wyvern support tank.

Thankfully the Dreadnought didn't have any guns so was ineffective this round but the Grey hunters did manage to gun a veteran down.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_201658.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_201722.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_201739.jpg

After all these targets presented themselves, Both elements of air support turned up to help turn the tide back in favour of the guard.

Pask and his associate went shooting first scoring hits on both the cannon and the lascannon, though rolled 1's for penetration, shouting at the crew to stop loading blanks. his associate unable to utilise most of the weaponry for the target opened up with the autocannon turret scoring hits though the one looking a dead cert to cause problems got deflected off of the Shield!

Up next the Lascannons of the vendetta tried to deal with the imposter but thanks to only just aquiring the target, only 2 of the weapons actually hit and they too bounced off the shield!

The vets in the chimera seeing the trouble climbed out the top hatch but one pulled his trigger too soon before he had aimed and the other also targeted the shield.

Things were looking grim, the executioner and plasma sentinel unloaded all the could onto the grey hunters. The sentinel reported targeting issues and scattered wildly, and the Executioner over powered it cells and overheated 3 guns losing a hull point in the process. 1 grey hunter died to the fire power.

The veterans unleashed all they could but due to wild shooting and inpenetrable power armour only 1 more marine fell.

The valkyrie travelled to fast to allow the targeting sensors time to catch up and missed with all its shots too.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_203854.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_203923.jpg

Pask watched on in horror as the dreadnought walked in his direction and swiftly carved both his and the Exterminator up. Pask managed to escape the tank but mortaly wounded had to miss the rest of the battle.

The veterans on the hill were cut down to the man, first by gunfire and then in combat. the other greys next to them shot the executioner and managed to silence the main turret after overheating in the first turn.

Meanwhile on the advancing flank, things got dangerous very quickly, the terminators podded in behind the chimera, while the Wolf scouts podded in front of the tank. surrounded by all sides the terminators shot their melta at the chimera missing the tank in a smoke screen though Thor threw his hammer causing the vehicle to get immobilised and a hull point lost. the wolf scouts took the sentinel out by weight of bolter fire.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_212025.jpghttp://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_212004.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_212059.jpg

My next turn saw the Plasma from the executioner and the sentinel go after the grey hunters getting a few with support from the wyvern too, though the aegis line helped the enemy as much as my by this point. the banewolf came to town inflicting horrendouscasualties to the grey hunters dropping their numbers to 9 in total on both squads. the meltas from the vets and lascannons from the vendetta took out the dreadnought.

the vets in the surrounded Chimera used the HF to great effect in the front arc taking out many of the wolf scouts due to bad saves,

the vets inside used the heavy flamerand one melta out the hatch, but couldn't penetrate the armour. the Valk opened up with the rocket pods and due to the armour though only one terminator fell.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_214725.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_214857.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_214911.jpg

The wolves fought back for their losses by blowing the banewolf and the executioner up. On the flank, the thunder wolves arrived though not quick enough to help the wolve scouts and terminators out to destroy the Chimera and the surviving veterans stumbling from the wreckage.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_221528.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_221537.jpg

the Vet squad deployed from the valkyrie in an effort to rid the table of greys and combined with the CCS deploying frothe vendetta aided the sentinel, chimera, vets from the chimera, valkyrie, vendetta and wyvern in killing the remaining greys.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_223606.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140821_223613.jpg

The wolves next turn turned to charging the thunderwolves toward the valkyrie and downing the aircraft.

At this point we stopped the game, we both had 6 VP's, his were game based ie objectives, firstblood, walord and linebreaker, where as mine were a couple objectives but mostly extra points from the cards that i had been lucky with.

was a good enjoyable game though.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

That's great that you're able to share your hobby with your wife. What army does she play?

Good job pulling out a draw. It was looking rather ugly after that turn two where all your tanks whiffed and his dreadnought dealt some serious pain (after a lucky scatter free initial drop -- from the pics it looks like he would have mishapped if he scattered at all). I guess you needed to deploy just a touch closer to each other to prevent that.

Nice to see a Banewolf in action. It died quick but it did it's job first. Great unit for to hold in reserve to counter attack pod armies.

My wife plays with my marine army normally. She has used the guard in the past though enjoys marines.

It is great that she does play as it is something we can do together that isn't some crappy program on tv etc.

Tbh the only reason for the draw was the stupid cards. If we didn't use them it would have been a massacre for me. Yeah a touch closer would have been good though really I should have been able to deal with the dread with the amount of firepower thrown at it. Damn trees and rolling hits!

I knew he favoured podding his men in so the banewolf was there as deterrent and completed its job admirably in my eyes.

Not sure what if anything I would have changed though.

A good read, and an exciting battle.

Will you be writing up the spousal combat too?

Thanks for the comments. It was a nice and fun battle which was good as it was swinging both ways each turn bar my 2!

Indeed I shall, will get pics and write up soon.

I would like to give you a little tactica advice when playing a droppod army. The key to securing the advantage lies in your deployment. If you place your tanks(artillery and russes) back about 3" from your table edge. In a box formation with the artillery in back and russes and chimeras in front. Space them out so you have a little room to move but not enough room for droppods/deep strikers to land. Then surround your tanks with infantry that are also spaced out to maximum cohesive distance. Then outside of your (meat shields)infantry place your ADL leaving a hole somewhere to allow your tanks to eventually leave your firebase. If done right your opponent won't be able to drop in melta range and if they do drop close to your firebase your whole army can hammer them right back off the board.

Thanks for the advice, I am struggling picturing it but I think I get what you mean. Tbh in this game with the amount of firepower I threw at the dread should have seen it off.

I appreciate that I am a battle report down at the moment, but had another game last night with the better half and it was 500 points zone mortalis.

I took the role as a defender, and she took the attacker role. Seemed right for fluff sense.

I used,
1x lord commissar with cara, emperors benediction, and the relic sword. 100

1x priest 25

1x ogryn mob 130

1x scions with bp on sgt and hot shot volley gun. 80

1 x vets cara, krak, 2xmelta, 1xhf 115

1x armoured sentinel with plasma cannon. 50.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_201433.jpg

The wife used,

Captain, combi-flamer, power maul, melta bombs = 120

1x sternguard squad, = 120

1x Dread Plasma cannon = 110

2x tacts flamer in both = 75 each

The mission was kill points and table corners. I won the roll for deployment and going first. This was how my command bunker was laid out waiting for the pesky marines.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_201334.jpg

This is how we set up, and my strategem points went towards paying for a sentry gun. (worst mistake ever as it wasn't used once).

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_202931.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_202942.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_202948.jpg

This is how the scene looked after my turn two, (notice the mistake of not running my Commissar combat reaction unit). Means pain later on for me.

The white circle in front of my veterans is what my wife used for her strategem and it represented a breach that she could then use as an entry point. (Much better choice).

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_203635.jpg

This is the scene after my third turn. Due to lack of running on the previous turn I screwed up my charge this turn and the commissar and priest weren't in range to fight. Also the priest rolled the first double 6 on a leadership check to get a war hymn off. Previous to that, my Wifes sternguard arrived and killed (thankfully for me due to bad rolling using kraken rounds (ap4)) all the lasgun vets. Her dread ran round the corner and her tacts followed a little slower. My 3 had the vets shooting the sternguard and due to the melta not working as i rolled 2's to it, only took one marine down.

Then the combat happened, i forgot my hammer of wrath, forgot that I have now lost furious charge, and only ad the ogryns do anything. thankfully the marines only inflicted 2 wounds. unfortunately the wounds i made were all saved. Thankfully being fearless ensured i wasn't cut down.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_210124.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_210138.jpg

This next one is after My wifes turn 3, her tacts arrived with the captain and flamed/shot up all the remaining vets, and the Dread got a hull point knocked off the sentinel.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_211442.jpg

My turn  started well, the sentinel took out some tacticals and some wounds from the captain. During the assault phase i Somehow got 3 kills on the Sternguard though one ogryn did fall, all this though with no commissar or priest still as they couldn't move round to join in.  This is how the scene was set for the end of my turn 4.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_213317.jpg

I then forgot to take pictures for the rest of the game until the end. oops. The short of it was the Marines first dealt with the ogryn by shooting, then the commissar and priest in combat, my scions came into force killing a few tacts and another wound off the captain, the sentinel missed, again, then they decided that making saves was for loosers, and promptly died until only one remained.

Her turn 6 had the dread charge the sentinel and wreck it by glancing blows in combat and then the captain finished off the last Scion.

Here is the sorry picture haha,

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e301/chrisburnett2010/geekery/20140919_220818.jpg

All in all it was a good fun game and had it been objectives would have been a different story having a totally different set of objectives. i was happy with the list though not sure way to do to improve it.

anyone got any comments?

That's a lot of things to forget, something to improve upon next time! Your DIY set up looks great, how did you find it as a Guard player? Must be a drawback to not have decent firing range but there should be plenty of opportunity to jump round corners and blast away?

I think your list wasn't bad, for something like this you can't leverage the advantage of numbers much so it makes sense to go more elite. BS4 would make the shots you do get better too but I'm not familiar with Zone Mortalis so I'm not sure if it has many special rules if at all?

Keep the battle reports coming, they're always a good read! :D
