Claustrophobia did not affect the Astartes. It was just another weakness winnowed from their psyche during the Emperor’s great work. Which was just as well, thought Sergeant Yce, since we are buried so deep. Sandstone pressed in from above, in this section of the complex the corridors were barely wide enough to pass a Space Marine in full plate. Cowering mortals pressed themselves against the rough-hewn walls as the Imperial Fists thundered down the corridor to respond to the intruders.

The dead rock of Tallarn pressed in all around them, but there was more weight than that on Yce. The mantle of responsibility pressed heavily on his shoulders. Squad sergeant though he was, as the bombs fell, something else had fallen with them. Command. To him. He was the senior Astartes in Vroni Annex. Well, excluding Aedard. But most of them preferred to leave Aedard to his introspections.

A deep bass reverberation shook the complex, and for the first time in weeks, Yce took notice of it. In truth the bunker shook daily, sending dust trickling from the ceiling and lights swinging on their fittings like hanged men. The distant explosions were formless things, ethereal. It was never clear what caused one explosion or another, but this was a world at war. Titan-death perhaps; the howling plasma screams of dying gods? High explosive artillery decompressing one of their sister complexes? When the occupants of his bunker had heard the first explosions in the hours after the initial virus bombardment, the mortals had set to wailing and flinching, certain that their safe haven was about to be breached. Even Yce had clenched his jaw, certain that the life-eater would soon find it’s way in. But the detonations had passed, then returned and then passed again, until they had just become a part of the background noise, like the steady ticking of the air-recyc units and the almost inaudible hum of the lumen-strips.

But today, today there were Iron Warriors inside the perimeter, and every explosion had to be considered carefully. How had the enemy made it inside? In fact, why had they gone to the effort? If they could approach the complex undetected, why not simply blow the seal and let the virus do its work on the defenders? As Yce raced through the corridors his mind raced through the possibilities. The Iron Warriors had tried the stealthy approach, and it was only sheer good fortune that one of the patrols had been able to vox a partial warning about the intruders before they were silenced. If it hadn’t been for that, Yce may not have even known the Iron Warriors were here. It seemed this bunker complex was more valuable to the traitors in one piece than it was as a corpse-filled tomb.

Yce had a demi-squad of Breachers with him, and Apothecary Tyxus, but he would need more to counter this threat. Last contact with the patrol had been in one of the lower tank hangers.

“Brother Aedard,” voxed Yce.

“I am here, Brother-Sergeant,” responded Aedard after a few moments, “what is your pleasure?”

Yce knew it was a weakness, but the way Aedard phrased things, like an old warrior of Unification, really got under the sergeant’s Black Carapace.

“State your position.”

“Closing on yours Brother-Sergeant,” replied Aedard. The link went dead. Yce gritted his teeth in frustration. It didn’t seem like disrespect from Aedard, just detachment. Disinterest maybe.

“Brother-Sergeant Kantus,” Yce voxed the other element of his counter-strike.

“Closing on the hanger from the north, thirty seconds out,” replied Kantus.

Yce and the Breachers emerged into the stifling gloom of the tank hanger. The formed a fist of stone with their shields and, with the Apothecary to their rear, began to advance cautiously towards the nearest silent vehicles. A few moments later Ancient Aedard emerged from an access corridor, his massive Dreadnought bulk scraping the walls and giving him the appearance of a walking bulkhead. The auto-loaders on his massive cannons dry-cycled, an involuntary tic that, when questioned, Aedard swore was in everyone’s imagination.

“Entering hanger now,” voxed Kantus. Yce saw suit lights in the distance, flickering in the gloom of the emergency lumens. He had his strike force. Now he just needed his enemy...

Imperial Fists Legion Apothecary

This model started life as my Primus Medicae with boarding shield and power axe. If you've been following the log for a while then you may have seen him in the background of some battle shots, half painted. :smile.: However when the latest Legion Crusade list removed boarding shields as an option for Medicaes, I decided to downgrade him to a humble Apothecary. :smile.: You'll be seeing a lot more of Apothecary Tyxus in the bitter battle beneath the surface of Tallarn (see previous post)!

I like the story you wrote.

Thanks very much, Bjorn. :happy.:

Further Custodes Reinforcements

I finished painting the third Custodian at the end of last week...

...so this seemed like a perfect opportunity for a Custodes group shot. :happy.:

Those Custodes are gorgeous! Love the green glow on gold armour.

Thanks very much! :happy.:

Where's the Apothecary's narthecium? Is it NOT a gauntlet-mounted unit, but a handheld one he carries on his belt?

No, it's there, in slightly reduced form on his right wrist. This is because his left hand was originally carrying a boarding shield. :smile.:

That poor guardsman!!! :biggrin.:

No need to worry, his arm is finally getting the medical attention it requires.

Hostile Contact!

Excerpts from the archives of the Imperial Fists most hated foes.

Unidentified Night Lords Tactical Marine in MkIII 'Iron' Armour.

Note the enhanced eye lenses, skull-face terror markings [ref: possibly Nostramo gang related?] and sub-surface lightning arco-projectors.

Something a bit different today. :happy.:  This is a one-off experimental 'proof of concept' model inspired by the description of Night Lords armour in Forge World's Horus Heresy Book 2: Massacre. Some Night Lords armour is described as including sub-surface 'Arco Projectors' to simulate a lightning pattern across their surface, and I wanted to see if I could replicate a flickering lightning effect with LEDs. It didn't turn out quite as I'd imagined, but I'm still reasonably pleased. :smile.:

He went from an Imperial Fist Apocethary to a Night Lords Tactical Marine... Augustus b'Rass was right that poor, poor Guardsmen.

Sergeant Scale gets all the best assignments.

Absolute genius! A really fantastically cool effect.

Thank you. :happy.:

The Night Lord looks AWESOME. How hard was it to incorporate lights of two different colors, with two different styles (one flickering, one steady), in a single model?

It was a bit of a pain actually! That's one of the reasons this will essentially be a one-off.* My original plan was to have four LEDs; a flickering white LED in the torso and one under each shoulder, and finally the red one in the helmet. Unfortunately when they arrived the flickering white LEDs turned out to be a lot bulkier than I'd hoped, the torso one takes up like 75% of the torso volume, so there wasn't room for the shoulder pad ones too. Also the red and white LEDs had different current draws, so the poor Night Lord has an extra resistor crammed down his trouser leg to balance the current draw.

So yeah, I've got inserting a single LED into a model down to a very quick and easy process now, but multiple LEDs or non-standard LEDs are still a pain.

* Although I am thinking of picking up Forge World's Sevatar model and giving it the same treatment. :happy.:

Hot damn mate... Thats pretty stunning :biggrin.:

Cheers! :biggrin.:
