Knights / Equites Irae - Honour Guard and Command Squads

Hello! I've eagerly looked at other Army logs on the website for a while now, gotten a bunch of inspiration and motivation for my own projects. I am currently starting a marine army, based on my own chapter, so thought may aswell do a log to get feedback, criticism and ideas along the way.

Now my chapter was thought up around two years ago when I returned to the hobby, but my painting skills were okay but could do with a lot of improvement. I moved onto Chaos for a good while but have decided to return after not being able to keep my hands off contemptors.

The chapter itself has a Knightly theme to it. Each of my sergeants are 'Knights' instead, each with their own heraldry for the squad. Basically my idea of differentiating between squads. I have a small list in mind that I am building towards but after that is done, hopefully be adding more and more.

The colour scheme took me a while to pin down. Originally they were a castellan green with a sort of off white inner shoulder pad. This worked fine at first but just started to sit wrong with me after a while. I started with a few different test minis, green again, turquoise, grey steel, bone and purple. In the end I settled with a sort of khaki/brown colour with white here and there to add some colour.

Not the best picture quality at the moment, trying to get that improved too. The right shoulder pad displays the squad type, for this one a black tactical squad arrow. On the left will be the squad heraldry, for this test mini it is black and red. But this is just a test mini I painted during last Saturday morning at my local GW. For my list I am having my troops as bikes, knights on steeds as such. I am still playing with the numbers, whether to have 8 bikes with the attack bike or 6 with the attack bike etc.

Army shot, 6 bikes and an attack bike. Two contemptors, still building the third.

Knight and two squad members. I've been adding lots of baggage and purity seals to try and give the bikes more character. Give them the feel that they are the marines steed. I have been mainly keeping to the mk4 maximus heads at the moment but have been thinking of placing in some grey knight helmets and chest pieces to help with a knightly feel.

Hopefully able to get more updates in soon, trying to finish a few of the bikes for undercoating, just adding last few details and removing mould lines etc.

Thanks for reading.

@oldschoolsoviet: I see what you mean, guess the white trim and the coloured lower mouth share similarities.

Bit of an update on the squad Sergeant. Knight-Sergeant Boral (Name subject to change). He still has some details to be washed and highlighted and a few extra parts to be painted completely, such as the sword. The sword specifically I am leaving till I can decide how to paint the armies power weapons. Any ideas people have would be very appreciated.

Sorry for the poor picture but the best I could get at the moment. This is the base I am thinking of going for, a very muddy look that can also be put around the bike treads and up the legs of the marines etc. Any advice on this? Does it look too plain? Should I maybe try and add a bit of extra detail such as fallen leaves?

That is all for the update at the moment, aiming to get the rest of my bikers under coated and start finishing them off. As well as finish my last two contemptors off.

Thank you for the kind words. Got some undercoating to do, give me some more bikers to paint up. But for now, a further update on my knight-sergeant, most of the work is done, just a few final highlights here and there really. The bike has had some chipping applied, give it a bit of a worn look. Need to add some colour to the buttons on the handlebar and just finish off the bag at the back. Then it will be good to get covered in mud.

The knight-sergeant himself still needs some highlighting, leather and the power sword finished before I do a bit of weathering on him. Also a test for my base is nearly finished. Trying to replicate a muddy forest type of base. For this I am putting down Stirland Mud with a brush to try and create a uneven surface. Used 'ardcoat to the lower areas to give a wet look. Ontop of this I will add some grass tufts and some leaf litter to bring some colour to the base.

Quick update on my Knight-Sergeant. Gave weathering him a go, not 100% happy with it but I feel okay about it. Apologies for the not so great picture quality, hope you can see enough from the shot, I really need to look at making a lightbox soon.

Going to be slapping a load of mud and weathering powders on the bike and legs the next few days, hopefully give it a really dirty, worn look.

Small update today. Been painting a second biker while just touching up the last detail or two on my knight-sergeant. Need to decide what style of power sword to go with for painting. But I have also noticed the large, gribbly, space wolf flyer on the horizon. As I mainly play Wolves I am wary of it. So to counter it I am making sure I have some flakk missile equipped Dev squads.

http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0729.jpg

Need to cover up the gap in his leg, cut a running leg up to make it look like he is resting it on a rock. Only got one good picture out of a few I took today, so will make sure to grab some more tomorrow of the chainsword and bolt pistol armed crusader squad. I need more running legs!

Great start to your bikers. Loving the armour mark in particular and the gritty, battered look to them (but then I am biased). Look forward to seeing more!

Thanks for the words! Yeah I just can't imagine Space Marines being clean with all the types of weapons we see used in 40k.

What color are you using seems really interesting

Mournfang Brown basecoat with Baneblade Brown applied over that.

Hello!

I managed to get a game in the other day, as my bike force isn't there yet, I decided to use Black Templar tactics. And I was really happy with the result, Crusader Squads are pretty fun. While I am still keeping with my idea of a bike list, I have decided to build a squad or two of foot marines to be crusaders. Even if I don't end up using them, still enjoying the idea and the modelling.

I have more built up at the moment, but these are the three going through painting. Trying to give as many of them as I can the loin cloths as I feel it gives them more of a 'Knightly' feel. And I use that term very vaguely.

My favourite out of this bunch has to be the plasma gunner. Happy with his pose and the general look of the model.

Now I have also been painting the first of my Mortis Contemptors. I haven't decided on a name for him yet but so far he has been really fun to paint. Lots of places to weather, just need to finish him up now.

Hello all!

Been finishing up the Bike Sergeant, contemptor and been starting on a Storm Talon. The Sergeant just needs his power sword done now, which I am leaving till I can decide on a style and the Contemptor is pretty much done.

First up is a group shot of what I have painted so far (I have been taking my time with this project, hopefully it is paying off)
http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0738.jpg

Next is the contemptor, not 100% on the feet, I tried to get them all muddied up but I think I might have gone a bit overboard.
http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0747.jpg

Decided to repaint my Storm Talon, with Wolves getting a flyer, and the army I play the most, thought I needed to get some of my own in the field.

Last picture of the update, my two bikers of Squad Boral. Added the squad colours on the shoulder pad, muddied the wheels up. When it gets a bit cooler tonight will have two more bikes and bikers going for spraying.

Hello! A small update on my first bike squad.

First a group shot, three bikes and the attack bike. Work has been a bit slow as funds keep needing to go elsewhere.

http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0757.jpg

A close up of the attack bike, which I made a horrible mistake of gluing the gunner down before painting, which in hindsight was a terrible move. A bit here and there to finish, like the gun mount but should be done soon.

http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0758.jpg

And the latest biker to be close to completion, just touch ups and the odd detail here and there.

Hello all.

Been a while since my last update and I feel I haven't got a huge amount to show. Been up to a few things recently but I have built a few more marines and been getting other ideas ready.

My first bike squad is nearly completely built, just have one of the riders to finish. I have decided to make my squads 5 strong with 2 grav guns and a multi melta attack bike. And here is the first squad gathered, three bikes and the attack bike painted, just waiting for more spray till I start with the others.
http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0768.jpg

I've also made a start on the second squad, 2 bikes are built and the squad sergeant is also getting there. Need to attach a backpack and his loin cloth. I've gone with a power axe on this one, to add some AP2 CCWs into the mix.
http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0771.jpg

After playing a few games, stormshield units are something I have found are quite tough to crack and look awesome. So I've decided to add some TH/SS assault terminators into my list or at least my modelling table. The Storm shields though I find our a bit small for my liking and not very knightly. I've grabbed some of the BT storm shields off from Forge World. The Maltese cross I think is universal enough to not just be BT if painted with different colours.
http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Cheditor/IMG_0770.jpg
For this one I am trying to have him running with his shield held in defence as he slams his hammer into the head of some poor combatant.

And the last model I have been working on is a captain of one of my companies or a potential inner circle of the chapter. Model is the power armoured Praetor as base with a Vanguard veterans thunder hammer. Aims are for a storm shield in his other arm to make a nice combat character I can drop in and give some survivability.

@Squeaky Thanks, I got it from a friend like 8 or something years ago. Been sitting in my bits box since. As a Bretonnian helmet seemed a good fit for Knights.

@deathspectersgt7 Thanks, hopefully I can keep it going

@stepper Thanks for the kind words

@Kael24 While I cannot say I know what a one percenter is I have made more development with the captain.

Left arm is blue tacked on currently.
