@Kilofix - that has crossed my mind. Would defiantly speed up assembly then paint time. I have the smooth on silicone and resin casting stuff on order. Is there anything else you would recommend?

@Gaius Maximus - no worries whatsoever, i would love to see what you are working on once it is finished.

@Kierdale - for the first guys I didn't have any real tools, I was using an exacto knife while I was still learning. I have the gw sculpting tool which works pretty well and now favor the 5 piece rubber tipped tools for clay shaping. I can't remember what there called right now but I will edit here and post a link or something for you if you want.

After looking at your efforts to date, I'm really not sure whether to be happy that I've already done 100+ infantry or very unhappy that I just built them bog standard. :)

Like others, I am extremely impressed with your concept and execution.

As to how  you paint your Vulture, consider getting an airbrush. You'll use your Vulture every game, help it look it's best. I've seen a lot of valk/vendetta/vultures and the one's that have always appealed to me the most are those that have an airbrushed scheme.

Regarding the coloring of your Vulture, I think it's Ok to do something a little different, but do stick to your overall color palette. So in my case, since I went with a winter theme, I did a splinter pattern with two greys as I wanted my Vultures* to be distinguishable from the Valk/Vendettas, which had white airbrushed blotches over light grey.

So make sure they look  like they belong together, but think about making them distinguishable.

* I had two of the earlier versions of FW's Vulture and the rear tail assembly was very fragile. Broke a lot. Sold them. To  maintain the capability, I matched up the Punisher cannons to the plastic Valk kit and converted the cheek gun mount (pics in my thread). So mine are "counts as" Vultures. Also, this was prior to the plastic Valk kit coming  out and them merging bits, so I am eager to hear how the assembly went on your Vulture.

Really looking forward to seeing this develop.

Cheers,

Just a quick update to show that there is indeed progress being made, slowly but surly.

I've decided on the darker green base and browns for my flyer with some heavy weathering just to tie it all in. The Vulture is just about assembled the only parts left is the cockpit and pilots, which I'm trying to decide if I want to install after everything is painted or before, Any suggestions? and the punisher cannons.

@ Honda - Overall it assembled fairly well with the mix of plastic and resin, of course there were some areas of gap filling required but over all not to bad. The only problem child was one of the tail fin mounts, that was uber thin and snapped, Quick fix once it was glued into place and can even be used for battle damage I guess.

The troops are coming along slowly, which is giving me a magpie syndrome of wanting to do other things instead of sculpt, sooooooo I put together one of the Tauros' and touched up the gunner. Just some bending of the roll cage and I can start painting it tomorrow.

And last but not least, some more pouches have been made and some molle rigging, its just so bloody tedious that the shiny object syndrome comes into effect far to easy.

Hope you enjoy, more to come in the near future.

The fiddly parts are the ones that wear us out... Your work is fantastic and as a fellow converter I feel you man. Take a break when necessary and build something easier and less demanding so your eyes and brain are ready for the tedium.... The end result is SO worth it when you plop your awesome army on the table and feel good that it's there.

Mmmmmm... Vulture... laugh.png... always sexy.

Btw per my own experience; one of my Punisher Cannon's belt feed (the feed itself) came in three pieces that I had to green stuff and reglue together so yeah, FW parts sometimes take some work. Slow and steady is good.

Going to hit you with another question though - any thoughts on Aircraft Insignia or Markings?

Also, your Molle LBVs are awesome everytime I see them. I wish I could replicate.

Progress continues, I am not even going to bother with sculpting tonight, the Taurus is all set and bent back into shape so I will probably be hitting it with paint tonight.
Came up with the paint scheme now, a Base of death world forest green followed by zandri dust brown for the cam, and then hit it with some agrax earthshade to muddy it up a bit.

Poor pic but I think it shows what I mean.

@Kilofix - I think I will be using regular aircraft transfers for the majority of the plane markings with a mix of some elysian transfers to depict ownership of the plane, so kind of like the how the US Army has it's own aircraft and doesn't always need to rely on the airforce, the Elysians wont need to rely on the Navy other than a ride threw the warp. For the Dark Star logo I was thinking something similar to the Warp Runners but with a black circle in the background and some type of star fading into the forground. I need to doodle something up.

First test for the vehicle paint turned out rather well I think. Still tones to do, visors, high lights, some transfers, the weapons, well you can see, it's a long way from being finished. But I do intend on using the same colours for my flyers as well.

I love the work you've done. Most people don't understand that "Light" units are anything but light. You carry or slingload or airdrop all you "need" for your mission. The  average light infantryman will  hump 80 to 100 lbs of stuff, dropping off before assaulting an objective...if feasible. The pouches and packs you sculpted represent this beautifully. Mechanized infantry tend to live in their vehicles and festoon them with creature comforts. Light guys understand that  "dismounted and deadly" is their thing , so some kit is added but compartmentalized for fast removal.  These  guys do  love bringing the pain by calling in air support. The relationships between ground forces and their air support is usually outstanding. I think matching camo on your gunships to show unity and the common practice of coming in low, fast ,and deadly would represent this well.

Anyway, love the force. Keep driving on!

Thank you for the comments.

@Scatmandoo- it will be armed with the GL. It did end up a little darker than tested, I had apply some athonian camoshade to green, because the browns started to take over and it was very difficult to even see the greens anymore.

@Brother Paen- I ran out of likes, so here it is.

Very nice sculpting, I am impressed!

Love teh concept of individual kit, makes a lot of sense from a real world POV.

Out of curiosity, are the new Elysian rules much different to teh original Anphelon rulesset? I have them and want to use them but cant justify the new book for just that.

@Emperors immortals- sorry I really don't know, I have never played a game yet with this army and presently don't own any of the IA books with their rule sets to see if there is any difference.

Elysians get nifty Grenade Launchers and a bunch of cool upgrades for their Fliers, as well as the Tauros, Sentinel variants and Sentry guns. I have the Taros book as it ties nicely with my filthy Xeno army. :P

I whole heartedly agree with you CoffeeGrunt, so many fun upgrades and cool things to work with.

Update thus far, I am calling the Taurus complete, even though I would like to try out some transfers that will have to wait until they come in the mail. The one belt of grenades are not painted yet, even though it may sound trivial, I don't know what colour I want the tips to be, I do know that I want them to be designated as a different type of ammo, so I am going to as the veterans of the Guard what they think on the matter.

So with the Taurus being finished, the vulture is now primed and sitting idle for a good 24hr's just to ensure that the paint has set nicely, I don't know if it's necessary but it makes me feel better when working with resin models. On a plus note I stumbled across a old birthday gift my wife got for me. A glorious Valkyrie which was primed and partially assembled then forgotten about... My bad, well it is getting an overhaul and will be painted up at the same time as the vulture.

I hope to have a nice dent into the two of these by the end of the week.

Loving the Tauros and looking forward to the two Fliers! I'm debating trying some Elysian allies using my models to see how they play, though the manager of my local store's a bit iffy on Forge World for reasons none of the rest of us really understand.

  • 1 month later...

So I have been terribly busy with work having sent me back to school to get a French profile, and have not been able to paint. To top it all off the day I did get a chance to paint my varnish decided to go milky forcing me to repaint the Valkyrie all over again. However progress has been made.

This aircraft has been rigged up for a recce and sniper group to rappel out of. A more detailed description will be written once I've finished painting.

Tail gunner is going to get a new paint job, Don't really like this one all that much.

Not to sure I like the look thus far with how the cammo lines may turn out. I may try rearranging them before I toss on some paint.
