It's also his spirit animal, when his sons saw it, one boldly took a knife and carved the same style into his flesh, saying "you are our father by blood and soul, just as the raven is your soul, so shall it be mine" others followed and they became the soul ravens. They split it with the imperial heralds before their fall. Their colors became completely burnished gold, a symbol and a promise in their eyes to be faithful to the emperor and mankind. He took a shine to it, and after finding and slaying an iron tiger, carved the symbol into his armor. The only changed to their armor was the pattern which became vermin brown. This symbol would be perverted by the traitor psykers of the legion, who mock them by wearing it colored in red, and flipping it. This changes it's meaning to more horrid likes. Kwylo took on a similar mark using the blood of "what they considered at the time" demons. This would be sited by those who were zealots in the imperial faith, to be the beginning of the legion's descent into chaos, and it took the combined powers of his loyal brothers to "free" him. Their colors when their primarch came were dark angel green, chaos black, and dwarf bronze.. They were the chosen colors of morpheus's tribe. They didn't bother to paint their armor, just kept killing till it stained blood red, the only change they made was adding scab red for detail, and patterned mechrite red. He covered his ship in this marking, and demanded morpheus carve it into his trident. It's also from the legend he got his name from. After the heresy Neptune changed their colors to be chaos black and dark angels green. This would inspire further fear, especially with their gene-seed flaws.
