Evening.

Having a bit of a problem with making my Praetor.

My intention, being Salamanders, is to make his Bodyguard, a bunch of FireDrakes. Which is awesome right?

But now, given how much Fire..Coal...Hide..teeth..fetishes, all that jazz appears on Salamanders in Pictures and stuff, im worried that if i buy the Generic FW Cataphractii Praetor...that i wont be able to Salamander him enough to make him not look like, maybe, the most rubbish ones :(

Help. Me.

If you're comfortable at all with sculpting, a lot of those things aren't terribly difficult to do. If you're not comfortable with it, you can get some bits here and there, like the scale cloaks from the WHFB Dark Elves, the toothy necklaces from Space Wolves, etc. Or maybe see if you can buy a single Firedrake termie off of eBay to use as your Praetor?

I had thought about a bit of greenstuff and a few subtle Wolf Conversions. All of my Sargents have the Dark Elf Cloaks anyway, so thats a pretty Army Standard, which is nice.

In terms of the Single Firedrake, i was thinking then he would just look like the Sargent of them again, although i guess i could buy the Torso..and the Forearms, then just mix and max with the Praetor, so he is bigger and better? Maybe?

Also, what are people thoughts on Multi Mark Scavenged Armour in HH armies. Or do people still to pre Istvaan?

I think the Firedrake set includes 6 torso fronts, and 5 torso backs. The 6th torso front is different than the rest.  What I was planning on doing, for a small Sallie unit, was to take the one different FD torso front and make him my praetor.  Use a different helmet or barehead, and the FD unit themselves will all have the same, standard torso, and the praetor would have the variant.  I think it's an elegant solution.  For your FD Master, you could use the helmet with the sculpted flame to differentiate him from the standard FD termies.  All it would take would be to buy the different bits to make the praetor.

Mix-N-Matchâ„¢ armor marks is fun!

It looks great, though to me it looks like something from the Space Wolves 13th Company that fell outta the warp and hadn't become Wulfen yet.  Can't wait to see it painted.

Errr... what?

While ornamentation is cool, somebody mentioned that the Legions didn't necessarily have all the bling and fetishes of chapters.

The Emperor's Children bling doesn't really look out of place, but all the ornamentation on the Sallies came as a surprise to me.

Well, i do like SOME ornamentation, i dont just want Green Marines. Thats boring.

But, its like the upgrade kits, i dont see Every random nubby marine having a special helmet or chest piece. So im saving them for Sargents and stuff. But if i could afford/ manage to fluff it, then i would have ALL my marines in the upgrade kits :P

So alot of people like Multi Mark, interesting.

And greta idea about the FW chest fronts, thats a good idea. Maybe i could use that on the Praetor from FW to make him special cakes.

Kage, every time I see that model the level of awesomeness it exudes rises exponentially.

Mix-n-Matching armour lets you avoid the monotonous "all mk.II/IV" armour armies you see all the time wih HH-era armies, and as Heathens himself said, scavenging makes sense. Some marines even may prefer some marks over others,so it's up to you.

For Salamanders, Spellcrow got your back:

They've got legs, pads, Shields, hammers and scale tabards too!

Forgeworld brass etch is always a good option, though Sallies look like they have the least infantry-friendly sheet.

Nothing wrong with it, and it really adds to a unifying look to one's army.

I just like going nuts mixing up plate. I've even grabbed a fistful of parts, thrown them in a plastic bag, shook it up, and reached in blindly to see what kind of madness I came up with.

I was originally going for monomark on my Crimson Sons - that being MK III - and it quickly became apparent how boring that was going to be. I'm still limiting myself to mainly MK III with some II and IV thrown in, but I couldn't have every squad looking exactly the same.

I'll be doing similar for my IHs - using Cataphractii for most squads, Tartaros for two squads but customising them with either home-made decals for different clans or using FWs brass-etch.

If (or when I start my IFs defensive force via the Castellum FoC) I have tons of regular tacs I'll go the mixed route and have them heavily weathered - a nice mixture of Mks ranging from II - IV ought to look great, although I may keep single/mono-mark suits for the Sgts and Champion types as a small focal point.

Actually...drinking whiskey to get some half baked ideas and throw some things together isn't quite bad after all either :P

"That model is really cool dude! What's his name?"

"Fourshot."

"Interesting...how did he get that name?"

"I was about four shots in when I built him."

"Oh."
