Cost Effective Ways to Model True Grit?

...how do you reconcile the obnoxious scale of some GW chainswords, the smallness or awkward shape of the knives, and a decent pistol and rifle combination.

As a certain prince of Denmark once said, that is the question.

I would not bother modeling all three weapons on every model.  I'd have a few bolter and chainsword models, a few pistol and chainsword, and a few bp and chainsword models, a few bolter models, etc.  Yeah, it's not completely WYSIWYG, but I think that as long as you inform your opponent, that's good enough.

Brother LongGone: your problem sounds like the one I had to tackle back in March when I started my World Eaters. These are my inputs.

The first order of business is to determine which bolter pattern goes with which armor pattern. As far as I know, they are all compatible with each other modeling-wise. The general consensus seems to be that Mark III = Phobos and Mark IV = Tigrus. For Mark V, feel free to mix and match - that is the point of the "Heresy" armor.

Now for the individual bolter kits from FW, all are supplied with the appropriate manner of CCWs. Tigrus bolters come with sheathed combat blades and Phobos bolters come with chainblade/mono-serrated bayonets.

The accessories kits (either Tigrus or Phobos) come with 10 holstered bolt pistols and 10 sets of pouches/grenades. If you want melta bombs, you can find 10 in the Mark IV special weapons pack.

If you want chainaxes with hands molded on, go with this:

If you want chainaxes without hands (that way, you can mag-lock them to the Legionary's back or thigh), go with this:

The way I do things (close to true grit):

Line Legionary: bolter in hand, sheathed combat blade/bayonet, holstered bolt pistol/pouches, grenades

"Aggressive" Legionary: bolter mag-locked to the backpack, bolt pistol in one hand and CCW in other, pouches, grenades

I'll get some pictures up for your benefit later. Just remind me.

All right, this is going to be a lengthy post, so please bear with me.

This tactical sergeant is true grit to the core - every piece of gear he is supposed to have according to the rules is represented on the model. He has traded his bolter for a power sword, he carries his bolt pistol in his hand, he wears the empty holster on his right hip, and he has got some grenades and pouches on his right and left hip, respectively. The modified chest and shoulder pads represent artificer armor.

This veteran Legionary is modeled wearing Mark II armor. He carries his Phobos pattern bolter with a mono-serrated bayonet attached (although chainblade bayonets are also available) and has some pouches and grenades on his left hip. The only thing missing is a holstered bolt pistol.

This vexillia bearer has everything according to the rules - Tigrus pattern bolter, holstered Tigrus pattern bolt pistol, and sheathed combat blade. The only thing missing are the grenades.

The same principle is applied to these assault Legionaries. They have their CCWs (be it chainsword or chainaxe), sidearms (Tigrus pattern or Phobos pattern bolt pistols), and grenades. One thing of note are the melta bombs they carry in the small of their backs. My assault squad is fully equipped with them, and it is only fair to represent them on the models.

Hope these help. :D
