Archangel, A Tale of One Gamer: VIIth Legion

But No working Models?sad.png

Oh, so many startlements. I cannot tell you how long my feet have beaten upon this road, but with sure conviction and familiarity the obstacles have arisen in my path. Though fate may have vouchsafed the reward at the end. Though the road may wind, yea, and my hearts grow weary, still shall I follow them, unto salvation...

In other words... no, not yet... cry.gif

I'm slowly converting some of my previous idea notes towards Imperial Fists.

So, how is the Imperial Fists Legion organized?

Horus Heresy Volume III: Extermination - Imperial Fists: Unit Organisation and Structure Within the Legion

(page 62)

At the time of Horus' betrayal, much of the early Legion structure remained in the Imperial Fists. Ever a practical leader, Rogal Dorn most likely saw little reason to change what had been proven to work. So it was that the base components of the Legion and the system of hierarchy used were little changed from its early days. As the Great Crusade progressed, however the Legion's particular role and developing preferences for waging war began to change this.

Analysis:

Imperial Fists started off like every other legion in its disposition and made adjustments when needed.

The Crimson Fist - by John French

(page16)

Our fleet was the primarch’s first answer to his brother’s treachery. Five hundred and sixty-one ships and three hundred companies had left the Phalanx. First Captain Sigismund had been given command but the primarch had taken him back to Terra, and so we had jumped towards Isstvan under Yonnad’s command.

(page 18)

Ten thousand Imperial Fists gone. I could not grasp that loss.

Three hundred and sixty-three warships remained. The fates of over twenty thousand of my brother Imperial Fists were now in my hands.

(page 20)

Now a second force from many Legions gathered to strike at Isstvan, but no word had come from the Retribution Fleet.

‘Word will come, my lord. The galaxy does not simply swallow a third of a Legion.’

Analysis:

Retribution Fleet = 300 companies

300 companies = 30,000 legionnaires, therefore 1 company = 100 legionnaires

300 companies = one-third of the Imperial Fist Legion

900 companies = 90,000 legionnaires = Imperial Fist Legion

The Horus Heresy Book I: Betrayal further explains the "Strategic Disposition of a Space Marine Legion" in finer detail. Suffice it to say, it briefly delves into a Chapter's breakdown into Battalions and then further into Companies.

From the above references, here is my own interpretation for a standard Imperial Fist Chapter.

Here's a small gathering of shoulder pad heraldry images from the internet webways. They're Imperial Fist successors, so they're certainly acceptable as squad or company heraldry in 30K. Quite a few can be done using existing IF shoulder pads. I even have a few old metal crossed-sword pads from an unfinished (other legion) project.

Darth and I have been battling the organization question since March. We've come to the conclusion it's a lost cause. There isn't enough consistency to build a TOE around. The simplest chain of command was provided in the book, senior captains like Yonnad command Households/Regiments/Chapters, Captains like Polux command battalions, and centurions command companies, but then Polux had his own company but wasn't called Centurion. Captain is the highest rank in the Legion, with other titles like Seneschal and Marshal being given in addition to the rank of captain, as Fafnir Rann is both a Seneschal and Captain of the Assault Cadre, which is unfortunately not a company, further screwing up the consistency. You've also got the assault echelons which comprised units from multiple companies and seem to be terminator elite, but then you've also got the 12th squad of another company in terminator armor indicating that terminators wernt veterans with low squad numbers, also seen in the 64th Squad of the 344th company, which were veterans in a company of a minimum of 640 legionaries.

@Marshal2 Crusaders: ...but you make it all sound so easy... I know, they're more "guidelines" than rules. msn-wink.gif

Update: No completed models to show yet, but at least I've been consistent with my purchases...

gallery_8429_9981_78539.jpg

New Additions:

Cataphractii Terminator Set (3) = 15 TRMs
Cataphractii Power Fist Set (2) = 2 PSwd, 8 PF, 2 CF, 10 C-B
Cataphractii Power Axe Set (1) = 1 PSwd, 5 PAxe, 5 C-B
Cataphractii Special Weapons Set (2) = 4 pairs LClaws, 4 TH, 2 CF, 2 PSwd, 2 PMaul, 2PB, 2 TL-AC, 2 HFL
IF Legion Upgrade Torso Set (5) = 25 IF torsos
IF Legion Upgrade Head Set (3) = 30 IF helmets

This is half of the IF force led by Captain Amandus Tyr to "Execute Perturabo".

The second half would be 40 IF breachers, which would cost £256.00.

I'm debating whether or not to wait until Primarch Perturabo is released to get the IW contemptor DNs, IW breachers, and or sentry guns to accompany him aboard the Iron Blood.

If I wait on the IW, I will likely get back to doing my grey legion VII "Unification" Tacticals and buy some Mk II Assaults to join them.

Decisions, decisions...

I know, I know... I still have not built anything, but the purchases continue...

gallery_8429_9981_359244.jpg

New additions:

8 Breacher Siege squad sets (40)

This completes the second half of the IF assault force for my planned ZM 'Execute Perturabo' project.

Procrastination is telling me to get some more IF bitz, i.e. shoulder pads, helms, torsos, etc... the other part of me knows I should just get started!

Excoriators, all the way. First time I've ever read a book, and went "Holy moley, why in the hell aren't these dudes everywhere?"

I'll shush now, and let you carry on, sir.

Purchase away then build

One excuse I've given myself is if I wait until I build all of my models, the colour scheme will be more uniform when I paint them all at the same time.

Excoriators, all the way. First time I've ever read a book, and went "Holy moley, why in the hell aren't these dudes everywhere?"

I'll shush now, and let you carry on, sir.

Some Excoriator heraldry isn't out of the question. According to the Lexicanum:

"The Marines who would eventually become the Excoriators were stationed on the walls of the Imperial Place by Rogal Dorn himself with one order: Do not lose."

I have to be careful reading more HH books. I just finished Scars and began considering a White Scars Legion instead of Imperial Fists. Fortunately, I'm not into bike heavy armies. And yes, I know I wouldn't have to make them a bike army as the legions are very versatile.

Get thee behind me, Traitors! tongue.png
