So brothers i have a question that i have been trying to think of, what is the best way to run a dreadnought, because i love dreads but they seem to never make there points back and i want to make them work. So what load out would you give them?

P.s for me a usally run a venerable dread with assault cannon and heavy flamer, named brother Arthus of 3rd company hes my first painted model and i want to make him work.

My preferred load-outs and uses are:

1. Venerable, with a multi-melta and heavy flamer.  Drop Pod in to support Deepstriking Deathwing or Outflanking Ravenwing.  Or, Drop Pod in two or three of them in support of a Greenwing force (any force really).  Pretty cheap price to have three of these rampaging in the enemy backfield.

2. Venerable, with a twin-linked lascannon and missile launcher.  Deploy it in cover and you have a very tough and accurate fire support unit.

Rule of thumb: Venerable is always worth the points. that +1 WS, +1 BS is golden.. not mention the rest of the perks.

If you're podding , one dread with MM, HF can give good account.

If it's footslogging I found they they work better in pairs or trios, wth long range guns.

In pairs: missile launcher and tl-lascannon; assault cannon with close combat weapon and heavy flamer. The role of both is basically infantry support. Never tried podding one - but it does seem an effective tactic.

Double auto cannons have worked great for me and I have had some success with Las/Missile dreads as well, but have replaced that with Double Las FW Mortis Dreads.  Also, I agree with Chaplain Lucifer on running multiples of ranged dreads.  Whenever I play ranged dreads alone, they get destroyed relatively quickly without getting much done, unless supported by other long range units.

I am going to be the voice of reason.... my venerable dread has never worked out for me.

Do me a favour, figure out the points required to do this, and put it in a pod.... can you honestly tell me you cannot beat that unit to a pulp with a cheaper unit?

Trust me I love the idea. I have a brand new Ven dread box right beside me as I write this. I'd love nothing more than to peel that saran wrap off and make me the funkiest ven dread ever and plop him in a pod. I have never had him work. In the odd game I've had him positioned beautifully, I rolled a 1 to shoot, or just failed to penetrate.

The best is the Space Marine dreads... the AV13. It just hangs around longer and is cheap for what it does. Every 4-5 games with my Dark Angels, I want to use the guy so I proxy him, and I instantly regret it. My last Dread ? He bounced his Pod off of an Ork Battle Wagon, promptly hit said Battle Wagon, failed to penetrate, and then got steam rolled into used toaster bitz by a Death rolla'.

Just think of this... a 9 man tactical squad, in a pod, with a meltagun is nearly the same points, but you get two super scoring units with it. (personally I'd reduce the squad size to 5, and put a Deathwind Launcher on the pod and save myself 40 Pts!)

I understand the desire to field it. I've considered a Dreadnought challenge for myself where I'd force myself to field one every game til it earned its points back!

See in my gaming club, that is meltas. No matter who uses it, it always hits and either rolls a 1 to wound or rolls too low to glance every single time. However in our group, Dreads work fine. My CSM friend always fields a Helbrute and it usually performs at least decently. Whenever I use my Dread it always makes it's points back.

I have had the same experience - My Ven Dread (with Extra Armour) in pod with MM and HF/PF drops in, targets something; always hits, but always rolls 1 to wound!!!  Its the same with its PF ... always connects but witht he power of a dead fish ...  That said; i pretty much have one in every list I make.  The HF always toasts something as its dropped down behind enemy lines ... and its always aorund at the end of the game, despite the attempts as heck the RipTide i'm normally chasing with my MM!

I'm thinking i'll upgrade to some loaded dice for my To Wound rolls ;)

Welcome Tygwyn! I'm pretty new round these parts myself... The Lucius is a FW (Forgeworld) drop pod that has the Assault Vehicle rule, so allows its occupant to charge on the turn it arrives. Costs 50pts iirc, and its rules can be found in Imperial Armour 2 (along with the rules for lots of other goodies, such as the Mortis dreadnought which can provide us DAs with some often much-needed anti-air)

Edit: You'll want to make sure you're looking at the 2nd edition of the aforementioned tome.

No, you still can't charge on the turn you arrive. Both the Assault Vehicle rule and the Drop Pod Assault rule in the Lucius entry explicitly state this.

What you can do is stay in the pod, and charge after disembarking the following turn, forcing the opponent to destroy a Shrouded AV12 Vehicle before he can get to the Dreadnought.

The lucius pod is pretty rad but I'd like a pod that's immune to interceptor. That'd be just awesome and would totally cripple the fish people more. And I'm all for taking large hammers and breaking fish people legs, or any part of them for that matter.

Theyve become quite a nuisance lately in my local store with a lot of nobodies coming in and running cs:fse or c: t in gunlines. Or rapid assault alpha strike lists.

I'd love to pod in and crush their dual build garbadge tactics.

Crushing garbage tactics with garbage tactics. Brilliant way to show them not to use garbage tactics... Not

Thanks a lot for the reply - it's a lot to get my head round - I last played as a kid in 2nd so I'm basically learning from scratch!

Yup, land shoot, wait until the pod is destroyed then get out and run amok. I used to love the charge first round rule but like this even more msn-wink.gif

The Lucious Pod has a firepoint, such that a dreadnought can stay inside of it and still shoot?
