15 Shades of Grey, A new start.... with Primaris,

Cheers Rockythedog

I have had an idea in my head for a bit. My new idea, is to combine the Grey Slayer pack leader with Cypher and a pair of mark 3 legs, + similar style bolter and use that as a vigilator, Maybe have him hooded also.

Anyways, until I can set a budget with the missus, I am merrily ploughing along with some of my backlog.

Tried using my airbrush for the first time in about a year. Tried out the sparmax 4 and it is a lovely brush, but with bigger nozzle/ needle size, I am having to relearn what pressures to use etc...

This is the first batch after spray and a wash. The administratum grey went glossy for some reason and the wash wouldn't hold. Put a second coat on and now it is a bit darker than expected. I will do some highlights and see if it will even out. Am on the rig now, so no more airbrush for a few weeks.

Also been messing around with these 2, need a little more wolfing especially the librarian... But do not want to go full-wolf on them.

Any ideas??

Great Space Wolves dude!  It's impressive to see how much your painting has improved with those wolves!

I'm looking at re-energising mine after sitting in a box for a long time and there's a lot of good inspiration and ideas here for me.  I'm also thinking I'll lose the blue armour and go with a more neutral grey, would you mind sharing how you painted your armour?

Looks awesome!

Maybe on the Rune caster, you could chop a few rune stones and teeth and sort of glue them cascading down from the hand. Give a tribal feel without the "full-wolf"?

I could try something like that, maybe cover half the tabard with fur also?  It is hard to take an iconic model like Severin Loth and make him totally different

Cheers Chazzmos.

I did a tutorial when I painted Geigor Fellhand but all the pics have been lost in the great Photobucket debacle of '17

I start the model by primimg blac then pasing with standard mech grey

I will then do a mix of standard mech and dawnstone and start highlightsing, then do a straight dawnstone highlight and then administratum grey.

Wash with a nuln oil and agrax mix diluted with water 1:2

Pick out highlights in administratum grey

Recently I took a leaf from grieux and after the wash, I will make a 1:2 glaze with druchii violet and go around the recesses, the repeat the process with a glaze of drakenhof, but in te deeper recesses, before doing te highlight of admin grey

I have done several adaptations of this where I have layered, butin most cases for speed I have used the same colours but done it by drybrushing

I had been chatting with Stray Idea over on fb, and he highlighted that the grey highlights seemed a bit flat, to which he was right.

I went back over the grey with dawnstone, then did a final edge with administratum grey. I think it has sharpened it up a bit.

Its a bit shaky, but it will do...  Also got the dawnstone highlights on another 4 of 19 models before the eyes packed in

This is a great thread, it’s taken me weeks to get through. You’ve got some great characters going on in here. I basically had to stop myself liking stuff because you’re notifications is gonna blow up.

I had my second kid about the same time as you. It has really hit my hobby output hard having two kids. How about you?

I love the runes your doing on all your vehicles. You’ve really got the Viking theme going in with these guys.

I really like the artwork with the guy with the wolf skin on his head that you were attempting to make. So I’m hoping you can figure that one out it would be great if you could pull it off. My guess would be cut it right down to get it as thin and close to head size as possible maybe even bend the plastic a bit to fit the shape better and go green stuff for the sides.

They are from the Iron Warrior helmet upgrade set.

I sometimes cut the nose guard to shorten it. I have not been successful with the green stuff to spangelhelm them so relied on the paint to give the appearance.

I love these helmets. Probably more than using the IF ones.

The targetter helms are great for seekers or long fangs.

The only helmets in the set I havent found a use for are the skull like helmets as they are too iconic Iron Warrior.

Grats on the new little one :)

The leather arm guards (vambraces?) add a nice color/texture change to the armor color.

On your edge highlights on the legs it looks almost like you used a gloss to pick up light, I like it.

Looking forward to more.

Thanks psilence. No gloss on the plate armour it is an edge highlight of Administratum grey.

And yes the vambraces will be leather, need to get around to doing those at some point

This is where I am at for now, very slow going. Working through the metallics, still got more work to do on te steel, then come back in and do some tidy-up.

Tried steel on the face plates to match he gold, but it has a hard time standing out against he grey, so may switch it to bronze,

What do you think?

FPS, NightHowler, thank you very much :)

SW1, no plans for |ETL as yet, am stuck on the rig just now, so will look at what I have when I get back and work out what I think will be achievable.

Baby Luke is having an op on Thursday for his hernia, which will be hard-going for him and my wife. She has to fast him before the op and I doubt a 3 month-old will understand what is happening... I do not get off the rig till Monday. Please note my company offered to let me go back for the op, but I discussed with my wife and she feels it will be more stressful having me at home rather than out of the way. She has her mother with her and my family around her.

This means ETL time would be at a premium, so likely just 1 or 2 small vows as most ime will be taken up with family and my own op.

Anyways, back on track tried something a little different:

Wanted to see how they would look with leather helmets. Was partly inspired by this and the Rohan from Lord of the Rings :D

Might redo the steel to make it pop more as vallejo black metal was maybe too dark a base.

Stick with full leather, go for half leather or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thoughts?

Thanks for looking :)

Thanks Bjorn.

Tried some washes. The colours didn't come out much but it is far more pronounced in real life

Bloodletter glaze, gives it a reddish, almost orange hue...

Caroburg crimson... In reality, it gives off a very dark blood reddish brown colour...

Reikland flesh shade wash, very little change compared to the others

Seraphim sepia, a nice warm brown..

What do you think?

Thanks SW1

The opeation went well, Thank you

The operation went well, although Luke has been sick, but I think it is a side-effect of the anaesthetic wearing off.

So what colour for the beards?
