Need help brainstorming a Knight.

I'm not buying any soon with bills, but I love mechs and mecha franchises. One of the things that captivated and kept me onboard 40k has been Titans, and their lesser knight cousins. I have a unit of Knights and an Imperator Titan from epic stashed away somewhere half the country away.

However, be Loyalist or Chaos, I have always loved my mercenary streak and cannot break away from it. Armored Core being one franchise that has kept my favorite mechs around, single pilot frames that are incredibly customizable called Armored Cores and outstandingly, the supremelyomgamazingsauce NEXTs. Their pilots are mercenaries called Ravens (AC4/FA called LYNX although a few ravens remain) fighting for Corporation megagiants, organizations)freedom fighters, and governments. Either belonging to certain organizations, or being out of the box freelancers.

I was thinking of getting the backstory and pre-design phase done in memorium to my glory days of Armored Core (AC1, AC3SL, ACFA). Memorializing the one man army playstyle they encompess, Hustler One as the most badass mech boss, and back when I was ranked #9 on the World leaderboard for ACFA circa 1.40 online for multiplayer... or was it 8?

My knowledge on Knights is sparse though, especially not having the ancient White Dwarf article or the codex despite reading it once or twice. I am partially familiar with the concept of Freeblades, and despite my desire to get a functional Chaos Marine army tabletop, I want something more than a set piece that doesn't fit a standard Imperial or Chaos template. So I decided that the model will have a neutral appearence while not being basic or heavily mutated.

I'll throw a few pics of my NEXT schematics to give you a feel of what I'm cobbling in my melting brain.

You need to focus on the pilot. He's the knight, not the machine. What drove him to break from the hyper induced addiction to loyalty and order, so much so that working with Chaos is justified? Did Slannesh appeal to his haughty warrior arrogance or did Khorne's fury worm it's way into the knight's soul? The machine would then come to reflect the pilot with altered heraldry and markings.

Perhaps a challenge written on the banner or captured slaves bound to the hull.

The line between Knight and pilot can become blurred, though.  In some ways it's a merging of man and machine, and once joined neither are complete apart from the other.

I'd recommend the Imperial Knight Companion as there's quite a bit of backstory regarding example Freeblades.  You can also look at the Dataslate for Gerantius as inspiration.  The 40K Wiki and Lexicanum both have some summarized information.

Well first of all, what type of knight are you going for? Paladin, errant, lancer, castigator or magaera?

Considering the mechanicus ties with the magaera, and the actual identity of hustler one in the AC franchise, those two blend together nicely.  Although 9-ball is such an iconic character to the franchise, you could make it work on any knight platform really.

Hustler One was an AI though, I'd have to go about making an unpiloted Knight and I still have to look up the new ones while getting a feel for both the mech and pilot.

Gerantius is widely considered to be unpiloted. Or the pilot is undead. No one knows for sure because no one has seen him/her/it and no one who has entered his mountain lair has emerged to tell the tale.
