Hey!

As it is my first post here I would like to say hello for every Khorne lovers, Nurgl kids, Tzeentch followers, Slaanesh admirers, and Emperor devotees as well:).

Next thing is.. There will be a lot of mistakes in this post since i am still learning english ( I am from Poland). I hope you wont be angry, at least not that much.

Where to begin... Well as far as I remember I was always into miniatures. It started with little soldiers from my childhood (if someone would be intrested in boring stories biggrin.png ). Now I got some miniatures from Warhammer 40k but not armies since I am visual eater it is hard to stick to one army when all of thrm got so beautiful minis... but one day I sow post on forum about Wh30k, then google it, and finally loving it for miniatures which are simply incredible. After research i found out that Death Guard will fullfill my intrests since I adore heavy troops. I didn't read anything from HH or BL in fact i am really fresh here. I love what you all say about fluff stuff and gaming. Now the goal of writting here appears, I would like to ask some questions.

- I would like to start my story with wh30k do i have to buy some books? (like codex in wh40k) Is there specify book for death guard?

- What troops should I buy for beginning with my unclean army?

- Since i never played wh40k and other miniatures games is this system suitable for new players?

- Which books should I read if i want to know something more about Death Guards than -Damn those scythes looks awesome!*

I appreciate all answers, also I am glad that so many of you are writting in this forum if you wouldnt i would never find out about wh30k!

Cheers nurgl94

ps.. Sorry if it is not right place to post it I was a bit confused where to put it.

These are the basic books you'll need to get the information you'll need to make your choice. The thing about 30k armies is they're fully legit to be played in 40k games, tournaments, what have you. You will need a 40k 7th edition Codex, you can probably find one of the mini-dexes with the rules summary pretty cheaply, that includes to play 30k, as this still runs on that base game system with it's base rules.

If you build the 30k army you want, you won't need to build a 40k army, unless you also want to. I'm not too familiar with the Death Guard's tactics, unit selection (what's good, what's not) I just know they're extremely durable units with a lot of poison/radiation/phosphate based weaponry. But I'll leave building to someone with a bit more knowledge in that department.

Big thankses for advice when it comes to game and books will get those red one for sure! Any ideas about models? I was thinking of 20 tactical mkII mariens, 20 Breacher squad, 5 Deathshroud, 5 Grave Warden, 2 gravition cannon and 2 contemptor. Am I running out of something for start? Also is  set of 5 books on FW good idea to buy, or those 3 next books are worthless?

I honestly don't know. FW has a really irritating habit of not just confining your rules to a specific bookset and just making you buy everything they put out at ludicrous prices. If they continue with the current trend though, you're just going to need the Crusade Army List and then the specific book that your chosen legion' makes it's appearance in, which fortunately for you is already out in the Isstvaan campaign.

As for listbuilding, I know that Battlescribe has some data files you can get for 30k that can let you build a list, you won't have the books or rules but you can start looking at unit combinations, options, prices, and such, and start putting together some ideas.

Hi there nurgl94,

So, to get the most responses at this stage, I'd suggest that you post in the Age of Darkness forum, rather than in army lists specifically. That is a great forum for the type of general advice that you are looking for.

In terms of books, it depends mostly on your primary interest and your budget. The red books that frozenfoods linked for you will provide all of the most up-to-date rules for 30K, and are the best buy for gaming. However, if you want more background on the death guard, then Betrayal is a great source. This also includes the basic heresy army list. With just this you could build a reasonable list but you will be missing some units that are added in Massacre and Extermination, inclluding the Grave Wardens (Massacre). Betrayal is certainly worth getting at some point though, for the death guard history and colour plates.

Your list of models sounds very decent. It fits nicely with the Death Guard theme, and would look great. A few potential pointers worth considering though:

- Firstly you are missing a Leader - you really want a model to be your Preator or centurion. You could convert one from you bits though, but it is worth considering.

- MKII armour is nice for death guard, but MKIII is also very characteristic. Maybe adding 5 MKIII's into your MKIIs would be nice, unless you want your squads to all have the same armour.

- Breachers are lovely models, and very Death Guard. They aren't great in the game though, as they cost so many points. I'm not saying you shouldn't get them, but you should be aware if this before you do buy them.

- If you haven't seen them already, check out the Death Guard upgrade sets on Forgeworld. They are another nice way to modify your force... they do make it more expensive though.

Good luck!

So mainly if I am into fluff you say go get this shiny book but you wont be able to use all of your army eq? I will probably end up with getting some info about my army list from internet while reading ace thing about my Asteras. It will be 70 pounds, any idea what to put in basket to get free deliver while not ending with things which are unplayable? Also is it only me or FW just increased price of their products?

Also is there any chance that someone can replace this thread to the right place?

Betrayal is an awful book to use as a primary codex. It's a heavy, beautiful, almost overwhelming item that you will not want others putting their grubby hands on. Absolutely get it, but leave it at home, lol. The first mar on it will be devastating, best to ensure that it's you.

Damn it. Yes, prices did just go up fractionally. That is pretty annoying - I got my order in beforehand, but I'm wishing I ordered more now!

Anything and everything you've listed bar the breachers are fine and dandy I believe (not sure how competitive the death guard termies are, but they look both look to have good sets of rules to me). Contemptors are always good, though your weapon choice will matter.
