The Cult of Orange

Recommended Posts

Long ago, in the before times......

Those who have been around long enough may recall we once had working blogs. While we are still attempting to save those blogs lost to the crash of the serve, I have used the power of the Way Back Machine to recover what I could of my old blog, The Cult of Orange.

Sadly, I have not been able to recover all the posts from that blog, but I have recovered enough. So for the time being I'll be starting the blog up again here as a PLOG in the WIP area. You'll see m orange chapter, the Vultures. Links to other peoples orange Chapters or armies (at least those B&C related armies). Maybe even occasional non-orange work if the whim takes me.

Over the next few days I'll start quoting in the old Blog posts, repairing links and pictures in them where I can.

Hope you enjoy it and if you know of an army that should be in the Cult of Orange, please PM me with details.

And now the list of the Cult of Orange. This will be updated when I find new Cult of Orange members are found.

*Please note it is possible some of these links have been archived, if so I'll try and reactive them time permitting.

Ok so to get things started I'm just going to repost the old blog posts (after having fixed the pictures I discovered after posting it the first time). This was the first post in the Cult of Orange blog sometime in 2007:

HISTORY OF THE VULTURES (abridged):

The Rogue Trader Era:

So the Vultures began. It was 88/89. Van Hagar (Van Halen's pseudo name after Dave left and Sammy came in) was rocking the charts and I was a big fan. The less than great album OU812 had been out for a bit and (lacking any creativity what so ever) I decided to modify the old Van Halen V:

gallery_2_3709_7142.jpg

into the symbol of the Vultures. I thought it was "cool" and it fit in with the more "line style" of the BA and DA symbols of the time.
Like so (thanks to Scuzzy for whipping this up for me):

gallery_2_3709_69.gif

Now I can't show you any of the RTB01 minis painted up in the original Vultures Scheme (they have long since met their maker) but just imagine the following Painter Scheme only with super thick paint, no highlights and bright silver bolters. Oh and the white modified Van Hagar V. Marine Dark Blue and Ultra Marine Blue in case you are wondering:

gallery_2_3709_8116.jpg

Second Edition, HeroHammer
1992 came around (I think that was the time anyway) and 2nd edition or "HeroHammer" was born. My inspiration for Space Marines, the Salamanders had been shuffled off into obscurity. Moved down the chain from 8th Chapter of the 1st Founding to 18th Legion of the First Founding. Their colors (from the original space marine paint set) were no longer Salamander Black and Salamander Green. Those had been coopted by others and were now known as Dark Angel Green and Chaos Black.
Not wanting to see the Salamanders die off I changed the scheme of the Vultures to match that of the original Salamanders. I changed the armor to the 'dry brushed' Salamanders green and the Chapter Symbol to a red version of the same V as you saw earlier in this entry and the emblem was on the RIGHT shoulder pad still. My painting had barely improved...one might say it hadn't at all. Those with innocent eyes may want to turn away:

gallery_2_3709_3774.jpg

Unfortunately as 2nd Edition rolled on I would get "are those Dark Angels?" asked of me far to often. Clearly a change was necessary.
Third Edition
Eventually third edition came about and we (as Marine players) were blessed with the great new multi-part plastic Marine Kit. So the Vultures 3rd version came about, or as some called it "The Vultures: The Halloween Years":

gallery_2_3709_20756.jpg

note the still horrible painting!
The ribbing -- some good natured, some not so good natured clearly told me a change was necessary. But to what? First and foremost the tired old Van Halen V had to be replaced with something more fitting. After a lot of internet looking (read as begging) I managed to get this image produced:

gallery_2_3709_107.jpg

I then found Griffon Games, now known as Greenfield Games and had a sheet of Vulture decals printed up. This then lead to the 4th version of the Vultures color scheme (again note my sucktastic painting skills):

gallery_2_3709_53948.jpg

Admittedly this was only a test figure but my painting was still bad. Still had the emblem on the RIGHT still as well. Unfortunately it was just "Halloween in Negative" and so it too would go the way of the Dinosaurs.
Games Day Baltimore (or as it was known then simply Games Day US) came around in 2000/2001 (not sure which year I did this in) and I managed to acquire what would become the signature helmet of the Vultures. In those day you could buy metal bits for $.25 a gram!! So 200 helmets later, the 5th edition of the Vultures was born!

gallery_2_3709_20084.jpg

The idea here went back to the RT era of the Sals, their Apothecaries covered their left arm in red to represent the blood given and spilled by the Battle Brothers. My homage to this was to have regular troopers in full orange but the specialists (Libs, Chaps, Apocs, Techs) would have their helmet and right arm in their specialist color.
By this time the Legio B&C had been around some time and planning a Vulture for it was in the works. 2003 hit and the chance to have one for the old LBC Contest came about:

gallery_2_3709_2811.jpg

Fourth Edition
Fourth edition is upon us now and with the Resurrection Contest after the great crash it was time for one more change to the Vultures. Though minor in nature it was still enough I think that we can call this the mk. VI edition. The change was going back to a more RT era (mk. VI) looking armor, complete with a studded left shoulder pad and the emblem on the right pad. The other was that specialist will now be in their speciality color from head to toe rather than just head and arm.

gallery_2_3709_5421.jpg

So this is basically how the Marines you will see for the Admin Challenge are going to come out. Notice the painting improved so I'm at least in the "not bad" category now.

Really nice to see the evolution of your chapter. And the gathering for the cult of orange is awesome, made me discover some missed topics.

Unfortunately, my Phoenixes are to yellow for the cult of orange  Anyway, will follow this closely !

Isn't that a 3rd Edition Raptor head?

It is, something I wish I could get my hands on some to convert the next generation Raptors to make some cool Bleeding Eye Cult Raptors.

Correct! In "Ye Olden Days" you could get metal bits for $.25 a gram at Games Day, so I cleared the drawer out that day. 200+ helmets of that variant.

This next post came about on Sept. 20th, 2007. It details the Purifier Landraider (the name of which was subsequently taken by GW and used for the Grey Knights for a different LR Variant) and it's various incarnations. I now actually have a Mk. III variant which uses parts from a Redeemer Land Raider but no pics as of yet. That will be for a future post.

QUOTE(german engineer from Company of Heroes)
Wash them in fire!!

Eons ago there was this fun little rule set called the Vehicle Design Rules. People came up with all kinds of mechanical creations of death. With Apocalypse coming about there is a rumor that the VDRs (in a refined form) might return. As such I felt it was time to pull this old design out of the cellar.

LAND RAIDER PURIFIER Mk. I

QUOTE
The Purifier Land Raider variant is unheard of in other Astartes Chapters and as far as Mechanicus investigations have found there is only one, the Hephaestus, within the Vultures arsenal. Whether this assault variant of Land Raider is an actual STC construct or the abomination of a misguided Vultures TechMarine the Mechanicus has never been able to discover. All attempts to seize the Purifier variant have failed to date.
Armament:
Twin linked Multi-meltas in the sponsons.
Twin linked Heavy Flamers in the forward weapon mount.
Multi-Melta on the pintle mount (not pictured).
No troop capacity.
gallery_2_3709_14662.jpg

As you can see it was a bit um...stubby....looking. The old metal landspeeder multimeltas and the heavy flamers from some other old tank kit were usable but didn't have a good 'feel'. This kit never got farther than that and was later stripped down for parts. It came in around 490 pts. if I remember right.
So here we are years later and we have the
LAND RAIDER PURIFIER Mk. II

Twin linked Multi-meltas in the sponsons.
Twin linked Heavy Flamers in the forward weapon mount.
Storm Bolter on the pintle and maybe an HK added later.
No troop capacity though I'm considering making it able to carry 5 man squad.
gallery_2_1354_242756.jpg
gallery_2_1354_162984.jpg
gallery_2_1354_50283.jpg

This tank is just in the production stage so most of the stuff you see here is just held together with blue-tac. I'm not including this as part of the Admin Challenge army but I felt it was time to finally build this monster. The Hephaestus was not designed with troop capacity in mind and as such is simply a tank for exploiting breaches in the line or fortifications. I suppose I could set it to only carry a half squad but I hate 5 man squads with a passion.
Currently the LRP is built with a basic LR kit. The MMs and HFs are from the Sister of Battle Immolator tank sprue and require no conversion. The plugs on the weapons mounts fit perfectly into the weapons so outside of removing the SoB emblems they are good to go. As you can see from the Mk. I variant the idea of leaving the MMs exposed didn't work very well, but how to cover them? The Lascannon covers don't fit well over the MMs unless you cut off the MMs tanks. I didn't want to do that so took the Hurricane Bolter shields from an LRC and pinned them into the weapons mount. There is still some modelling work required here so they don't look so fragile but overall I think it works better than an exposed gun.
So this is why there was no update this last weekend as I got on a modelling vibe and had to hammer this thing out (along with some other things that I can't show you yet). I'll be back to the true Admin Challenge this weekend with a the Mk. III version of Chaplain Thiel of the Vultures 3rd Company.

This post was originally made in the blog on Oct. 4, 2007. It follows up with some more Vultures stuff as part of the Admin Challenge (big fail for all the admins in the end....). Some of the links may not work due to data loss or being archived.

ADMIN CHALLENGE: TENTATIVE LIST

So here is the tentative army list for the Admin Challenge:
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/style_emoticons/default/HQ.gif Chaplain Thiel (3rd version). Master of Sanctity, Artificer armor, plasma pistol, purity seals
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/style_emoticons/default/HQ.gif Reclusiam Command Squad: Reclusiam Standard Bearer w/holy relic, Apothecary Ebriel, Sgt. w/termie honors and 6 Marines w/2 Melta guns -- Furious Charge -- Rhino Transport
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/style_emoticons/default/HQ.gif Total: 480pts.
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/style_emoticons/default/Troops.gif Squad Pesak. 10 Marines with Lascannon/Melta, Frag/Krak, Rhino
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/style_emoticons/default/Troops.gif Squad Uriel. 10 Marines with Lascannon/Plasma, Frag/Krak, Rhino
http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/style_emoticons/default/Troops.gif Total: 510
So I have 990/1000 pts and could probably make the list infinitely more "playable" but I'm not one to give a hoot about winning. I don't get to play much anymore so any game is a good game. So anymore I just theme the armies to what they are supposed to be. In this case, Vultures Third Company.
So more next week (unless I manage to get my Call of Chaos WIP ready tonight) and maybe...maybe even some painting. But most likely just building.
That was then and now.......

Jury Duty, Wave 3 of the B&C Army Bag and even the Call of Chaos are all reasons I could give for not being "up to date". Truth of the matter is though that I just hate posting WIP shots. I find myself nitpicking the WIP work and wanting to go back and change things. Unfortunately this tends to be "for the worst", so over the years I've just got into the habit of not posting WIP shots.
That said I have been working on some minis for the Admin Challenge.
For starters, an all new version of Chaplain Thiel:
gallery_2_1354_47568.jpg
and Techmarine Butator (even with a dremmel, taking out the head of the new Techmarine is awful!):
gallery_2_1354_3339.jpg
gallery_2_1354_8633.jpg
Both need some green stuff work at this point but hey..it's better than nothing!

Now you might be saying to yourself "There was no Techmarine in the list he posted." and you would be right. But I figure if I am going to seriously complete this version of the Vultures then I may as well knock out some character minis while I'm at it. There is a Librarian on the table right now but isn't to the point of even being worth a WIP shot. Maybe this weekend I'll have wip pics to post.

This post was originally made in the blog on Oct. 20, 2007. It details some more of the soon to be failed Admin Challenge minis.

Oct 20 2007, 06:53 PM
The new Chapter Master minis have one of the Captains in Mk. VI shoulder pads! Thankfully they also have seperate heads and in the case of this guy a seperate left arm (if you wanted to change it out). Unfortunately this ones sword was bent into a U shape inside the box so after bending and working with a flat alligator plier I got it as flat as I could.

Still debating filling down the chains on the right shoulder.

So that is Captain, Chappy, Libby and Techmarine all in WIP for the command structure. Company Champion, Standard Bearer and the command squad to go.

I'm gonna cheat with the Apothecary and just use my Ebriel mini since it broke off the base when I went to Chicago GD.

Captain ?
Chaplain Thiel
Librarian Harshiel
Techmarine Butator
Apothecary Ebriel

I'm still going thru A Dictionary of Angels: Including the Fallen Angels by Gustav Davidson for the names of the Characters. This is a great resource as it covers angels from many faiths with brief descriptions of what their angelic duty or station was and what role if any they played as part of The Fall that is refrenced in various religious texts.

As with past WIP minis for the Vultures this one is just blue-tac'd together for the time being.

With the 7th Call of Chaos having kicked off, I've pulled an old thread out of the blog to post today. Haven't decided yet if I'll join the Call this year or not though.

This was originally post on Sept. 11, 2007.

So we have the Call of Chaos Contest going and in an attempt to keep it fresh in everyones minds, the mods are .

This post was also from October, 2007, though I'm not sure of the exact date.

Still a long way to go with this Company Champion. I'd probably be farther along if I hadn't spent a good part of Saturday and Sunday night cussing at the Baseball Gods as the Indians lost to the Red Sox in the ALCS..... :furious: :censored: :furious: :censored:

I've done the 2 handed hammer before for an old Sals mini:

and seems GW might be doing the same for the next Games Day mini.

Posted by Kurgan the Lurker, Dec 25 2007, 06:57 PM in Football Bets
So yeah...that uh Admin Challenge thing. I've got plenty of stuff built but nothing painted yet so what to do. Well I'm going to try and do daily updates from now until the first for starters. Note I say try......
I'm also going to cheat! For example the photos you see here today I'll count towards my 1k points. tongue.gif
Anyway......over at the Millenium Gate Forums we do Pigskin Pick'em every year (American Football stuff for you non-Yankees). As sometimes happens, I made a bet with Tiger Raja over who's team would put the beat down on the others better. He being a vile and decrepit Pittsburgh Steelers fan msn-wink.gif and I being a tried and true Cleveland Browns fan. Though last time we did this Raja was a Washington Redskins fan but he jumped shipped a few years back. :tongue.:
The bet was if the Browns went 1-1 or 2-0 against the Steelers Raja (who is a writer by trade) would rewrite my terrible and not fit for even pulp fiction rags Index Astartes article on my Vultures Chapter. However if the Steelers swept the Browns (2-0) then I would paint up a version of Tigers Raja's famous (infamous?) Red Head.
As it turns out the Football Gods were fickle and frowned upon the Browns having a much better than expected season and so they smote our hubris by letting the Steelers beat us twice! Shortly there after the request for "One red-head in terminator armor" came down the pipeline. Eesh..a female marine...by me?!?

So first the building! Easy enough right? Start with 1 terminator body and stick a female head on it. Well that would be boring really so we had to make it more in theme with a Vedic Tiger. I started by picking a head. Raja used this old Samanatha of the Blades miniature by Reaper for the head on his Red-Head. It's also a head used on another version of the Red-Head by former SW mod Fenrir Sureblade. Nice and all but the Red-Head needs a fresh face or maybe I just didn't want to paint all that curly hair.....

So I went with the new version of Samantha of the Blades for the Red-Head that I was constructing.
gallery_2_3709_13182.jpg
Next was to tigerize the mini. I started by cutting the chest skull off and then filing down into the chest a bit. I then sawed the head of a Black Orc Games Tiger Swordsman off at a flat angle and sinking it into the chest cavity I had created:
gallery_2_3709_18587.jpg

I'm told that with the one ear layed back as it is on the mini the head looks more like a bear than a tiger but oh well.
So now I had to add at least one more tiger icon after getting the idea from Sabre Tooth Tiger mini by Reaper laying around so I made a green stuff cast of the face. I pressed a terminator pad into the back of it while it was still curing so that it would fit the pad properly and wound up with this in the end:
gallery_2_3709_1323.jpg

Not great I realize but within the theme of the FToV I hope.
Now I'm not a Demon winning quality painter by any stretch of the imagination but I'm not a slouch quality wise either and I found this to be somewhat challenging. The black and white parts are pretty straight forward. The red-hair, again something I'm ok at. The flesh....well...I suck what can I say. The tiger head on the shoulder though proved to be somewhat daunting. Even after doing my standard 7 color blend white and the 4 color black stripe work I'm not happy with it. The blue eyes btw are from fluff on Tiger Raja's site.
Ultimately I changed a few things slightly from Raja's standard paint scheme for but it was mostly in doing a bit less of the white and stripes in places but overall I think I kept the feel of the original Red-Head. This is what I finished with:
gallery_2_3709_17746.jpg
gallery_2_3709_38660.jpg
gallery_2_3709_3531.jpg
gallery_2_3709_585.jpg

gallery_2_3709_4384.jpg
gallery_2_3709_31760.jpg
gallery_2_3709_4612.jpg
So here we are in 2014 and I can see all kinds of problems with this model. Some good, lot of bad. Still happy to have done it.

This post, which happens to be the last of those posts I could recover (there were only 41 posts in the old blog) will be the last one here before I start in on new stuff. There are two more old blog posts but as they are just text I'm leaving those out for now...maybe...I don't know. Anyway, on to the old timey stuff.

Been a long while since I've done much of anything painting wise. Had originally planned this for the contest but various things put the kebosh on getting it done in time. So here it is:
Ok so I've been trying out new light set ups and sadly none of these pics came out well....so I'm glad I missed the deadline for the contest in that regard.
I present Brother Robin of the Imperial Death Chickens:
For those of you who have been around long enough you may recall we often used our made up Chapter, the Imperial Death Chickens when giving rules examples, both for the board and other things. They haven't really been seen on the B&C since about this time but you may see more of them soon.
