edit: now a proper project blog! :biggrin.:

edit 2: update to better reflect project scope (ever increasing it seems...)

edit 3: now we're including Thousand Sons, guess the brackets were prophetic?

edit 4: now the Thousand Sons can fulfil a detachment they get their own topic in the Thousand Sons section :biggrin.:

edit 5: Daemonettes have their own home too, also updated warband scheme at bottom of post :smile.:

After getting a taste for Kill Team my gaming circle got into some talk about collecting small kill teams from new armies as a fresh modelling opportunity. Whether or not this comes to fruition is another matter, but I thought this would be the chance to tick a few boxes of mine; namely to get my Slaanesh on and experiment and push my modelling and painting abilities. So here I am to scope it out before anything gets started!

I'm familiar with Marines, but having not encountered Chaos for a while I'm a bit out of touch with the finer details of what's going on aside from the obvious. How does Slaanesh fair these days? What about daemon units? I'm not too fussed about the other gods at the moment, if I did end up using their stuff I might counts-as them as something Slaaneshi as a good excuse to hone my converting skills.

This is all sort of unplanned so you'll have to forgive the rambling nature (or more rambling than normal?). I quite like the idea of whites, pinks/purples and maybe some black and gold but I gather this is fairly typical of Slaaneshi stuff? I'm not set on anything yet other than liking something bright, maybe with something in the pinky-purpley range - all my armies have green on so far, could that be good somewhere? As I said I really want to get outside of my comfort zone but I also want to do something I'd like.

I crafted a quick CSM painter colour scheme up, behold it's probably generic glory:

csm.php?bpe=FFFFFF&bpj=FFFFFF&bp=FFFFFF&

Well, everyone starts somewhere right? Painting a halved scheme would be something new too, I'm discounting quartered because I'm slow enough painting as it is :tongue.:

While I'm sure that the army has a good chance of growing into a full one given time (isn't it always the way?) I'm only focusing on a Kill Team right now so I'd prefer to start with suggestions based on that first :smile.: I've not given any thought to backgrounds, names etc yet either but I'll put some time to this if it ends up having legs.

Thanks in advance

A very nice scheme.

That's white or silver (can't tell on my mobile)?

A nice choice you've made with Slaanesh!

I don't know Kill Team rules but Noise Marines are Fearless, have good Initiative and the Blast Master is an outstanding weapon. Or so I hear. That's what drew me to them. That and the conversion opportunities!

I'm currently toying with 5 Raptors (MoS. Leader with CM & LC. 1xMG, 1xFlamer) and 10 cultists with a single flamer. But do have another in mind using Noise Marines with a mix of weapons.

Nice scheme too. Which doesn't have to be Slaanesh. That could just as easily be Tzeentch or Undevided as well. Would more be about how you highlight the purple really. And what accessories are added too.

Oh, and welcome to Chaos. Hope you locked your Chimera when you parked outside ;)

Thanks guys, yeah it's white. I don't really like how silver turns out usually, or maybe that's just my painting.

I've checked the GW site, can you only buy the sound weaponry separately? I'd like to focus on Slaanesh stuff so it's good if they're not awful :laugh.: I'm not interested in cultists, it'd just be pure CSM and maybe with some daemons eventually. I have an extensive bits box so I'm wondering if I could do a bit of mixing and matching, maybe have the Marines a bit less spiky as that feels less Slaaneshi to me?

Raptors sound nice, and the models look cool too. I think my brother has some Chaos bits around I could liberate and I need to delve deep into the bits for the new Inquisition henchman event so I'll try to build a model and get a test scheme going :smile.:

In my head I've got this idea for a paint job that's hard to explain. Pure colours, but with a sort of patchy edge to it like they didn't have a small enough brush to lead in with, if that makes any sense (probably not). It'll mean starting with a black undercoat - we'll see if I can pull it off... :tongue.: What paint is the closest to the pink I've chosen, looks like Emperor's Children might be the best (appropriately)?

It was strange to see, I would have thought they'd be in plastic now but apparently not. I also couldn't find any Rubric Marines anywhere, it seems much has changed since I last looked? It could be a good chance to see what I can do with my bits though I'm not sure if I have spare HBs currently - this is part of what the army is supposed to be for after all :smile.:

I think I might like to get some Terminators too and maybe a Defiler because he looks like an angry Mud Crab, but I'm not sure if they fit the Slaanesh theme. I think the chaos background stuff has moved on since I last read it... How viable is a mostly Marine list, for example is it worth tooling up CSM squads with CCWs and Slaaneshi upgrades? Should I ask about Dreadnoughts? My chapter laments their fate enough already :sad.:

Better not get carried away already :laugh.: Thanks for the help so far everyone, I'm not used to not knowing what I'm doing with an army :tongue.:

I'd strongly recommend Bonzi's thread on Noise Marines and Slaanesh lists:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271966-making-noise-marines-scream/

It's what inspired me.

Emperor's Children looks like a good pink for you. There's also Fulgrim Pink if you want more of a pastel.

I think that answers that question, they look great! Forge World it is then. I don't know when my next FW order will be though, it's been a long time so I'm sure I can dig a worthwhile order up from them somehow. Though I don't want to do actual Emperor's Children I do fancy mixing armour stuff and having them look less spiky so maybe raiding FW more would be a good idea? I'll give it some thought once I've done my tester Marine but I do have a couple sets of FW older marks...

Thanks for that link Kier it'll be a good read, I've been helping Bonzi with Guard stuff so it's fitting he returns the favour (albeit from the past) I think Emperor's Children is the pink to go for, not a big fan of pastels. Would Screamer Pink be a good colour to build up to Emperor's Children or would it be better to build it up with coats for a brighter finish?

Cool, I've got a firm idea of what I want to do for the paint scheme now - or rather what I'd like to attempt :laugh.: Turns out that the bits only has Berserker models but after foolishly perusing the FW site I'm now wondering about using more than just the Kakophony models. The theme of the army has been coalescing and I'd like to do something less overtly spikalicious, but I'm not sure which side of the spectrum to work from. Working up chaosy stuff on FW models would be a grand endeavour and be the challenge I'm looking for, but I'm not sure if it might be too much work and kind of miss the point of doing Chaos in the first place.

I already have a Marine army, but I also think Chaos is more than just spikes and silly helmets (who's idea was the massive horns anyway, don't you keep banging your head on door frames?). I also found these which I think are really very cool. I've had the chance to properly chew on the codex now and I've got some ideas, but I should decide what models I'm starting with before I do anything. Working on FW models would give them a strong theme that I could control with work, but I'd feel I was missing out on stuff like the Terminator and Raptor models which I like.

Or maybe I could use that as an opportunity to convert those models a bit to make them fit in more? It doesn't help that my brother is talking about doing a FW Iron Warriors force... I blame you for my indecision TJWyrm! :tongue.: I think I'll ruminate on this as I get the Inquisition event out of the way and come back to it, but any advice or suggestions would be very welcome :)

Word of warning. If your having problems with getting silver right, your going to hate purple/bright pink. I would class it alongside yellow and black as worse to paint to look good.

good thing would be to do some test runs with color combinations.

as to what start with . Go with the cultists, you can use them in any force and they will be a good break from the marines you already have AND the chaos ones you will be testing one.

Hey! Welcome to this side of the forums :)

I have an all Noise Marine kill team, and the sonic weapons/ faster initiative/ fearlessness makes for good times! I also recommend making cultists because having a lot of bodies on a kill team is also very useful.

Looking forward to seeing your team, regardless of the final roster.

If you saw my Guard you'd know I have no problems escaping painting Marines :laugh.: I've got some ideas on how to achieve the paint effect I want but don't worry I'll be experimenting extensively to get this right! I'll get one of the snap fit boxes to get the ball rolling :smile.: Maybe if they're not too much of a failure I'll post up the results :tongue.:

While I'm thinking about it, I didn't spot anything particular on the nature and relationships of the gods when I read the codex? Maybe I missed it, or was too focused on the army list stuff but is there anything I should be avoiding when building a Slaaneshi force? I managed to find what happened to the Thousand Sons too. I'd like to add some to my force one day but maybe plastic next codex then?

There's nothing rules-wise but lore-wise there is the Khorne/Slaanesh, Nurgle/Tzeentch rivalry.

So, you might want to avoid Khorne units (or model them in some way enslaved by the Slaanesh element, as I plan to).

The 1kSons conversion kit isn't bad. Now it's resin it's far easier to convert further compared to when it was metal. Or wait until FW puts out HH 1kSons! ;)

I guess the Chaos gods don't dislike each other that much anymore :P I've got an idea of how I'd do Berserkers but I don't know if I'll end up using any yet.

I popped into GW quick for some paints but they don't stock any snap fit Chaos Marines  I'll have to see if I can source some elsewhere, or just paint something else up?

I think I could probably wait, maybe FW will do some by the time I get round to it? :P

I laugh in the direction of purple and pink. Though they do take a little work ;)

Pink does indeed take time! (An hour and a half of it last night and I still have naught worth photographing!)

I hear smaller GWs (or at least over here) don't stock the pushfits anymore. I had to order mine. If you're in no hurry then I'd recommend it. Better that than a more expensive model.

My local GW is a pretty large one and they only stock the cultist snap fit for Chaos :( Although I'm not sure how spiky I want my Marines it's a good box to get, I'm itching to get started so I'll try to see what I can find in other stores. Failing that there will be a group online order made soon so I can append it to that. A good excuse to finish some other projects first I suppose :P

  • 1 month later...

Noise Marines are cool for modeling but for KT gaming, I find them too expensive. If you do go with them, I'd stick with Bolters on them and just give the one dude a Blast Master.

Otherwise, for KT I usually run plain CSM + Chaos Spawn. Or Bikes.

Edit - some additional detail:

The problem with NMs is that only the Icon bearer will get FnP as they are all individual models. And, the Fearless and I5 don't do that much. Also the regular Sonics may be good against GEQ but not MEQ. The Blastmaster however is devastating as its both AP3 and Ignores Cover but you need to be able to protect him. Maybe put him in a Rhino, he can still shoot out the top hatch. Like 5 NMs + BM + Rhino. But that's still only a handful of models.

Usually I prefer something like 10 CSM and 2 Bikes or 10 CSM and 2 Spawn. Sometimes though I might do a Bolter / AC Pred and Cultists with Flamer.

Thanks Kilo that's what I was pondering so good to know that it had some basis in reality :tongue.: I'm also thinking of using CSM as then I can mark them once I get out of Kill Team. All purely theoretical at this stage as I'm concentrating on getting a colour scheme I'm happy with and I'll worry about what models to get afterwards :smile.:

Now I have the snap fits I will be sorting them out for priming this week as a break between the other things I've got on (sadly not hobby related), with a bit of luck I can start on the first experiment on Sunday :biggrin.:

Ok, the grand crusade officially starts:

gallery_30308_10249_13834.jpg

Now they're primed I can start work :smile.: I figured that the snapfits are also good because they give me three attempts to get it right. If that doesn't work then it's a sign that I should try something else :laugh.: Armed with stuff from Kier's Psychopomps (and the link he found) I am quietly confident that I can get the appearance I'm hoping for with the white and pink - at least within three tries

For reference, this is the slightly updated colour scheme:

gallery_30308_10249_52599.png

I'm hoping to do a sort of lead in on the pink and white of black, which is one of the reasons I'm starting with black. It's a little hard to explain how I want it to look so hopefully I can show it soon instead :biggrin.: I've also been ruminating on the models to use. I'm thinking that using a mix of the less silly Chaos helmets mixed with loyalist ones and back packs to give them a less overly spiky appearance but like I said the exact details of what models I use and how can come later :smile.:

I like to use Loyalist marine bodies with Chaos backpacks and trim most of the insignias off for my warband, so you get the smoother lines and look of a recently fallen Renegade. Then I can save the "true" Chaos Marines for specialist Legionaires, Chosen ans Possessed.

It also cuts down the time needed to paint aignificantly due to lack of trim :smile.:
