IL VII - The Berserkers of Uran (thread 1)

I see now. Maybe make them give an extra attack on the charge too? To simulate giving a kick with them as them come into combat. Increase the price accordingly, of course.

Impact Thrusters - Any model that is eligible to take a jump pack instead replaces the option for a set of impact thrusters instead for the same price (note that models/units that come with a jump pack as standard, for example Assault Squads, are exempt from this and still restricted by the Angels Will Destroy The Skies rule). Models equipped with impact thrusters move an additional 3" each time they move, whether it be standard movement, running, charging, fleeing or consolidating, and have the Hammer of Wrath special rule.
Note that this bonus movement does not affect pile-in moves, nor does it affect movement performed as part of a regroup move. In addition, models may re-roll difficult terrain tests, but must abide by the second roll, even if it is worse. For all intents and purposes, the model's unit type remains as infantry.

With the banning of the use of jump packs, Techmarines of the Berserkers of Uran began research into an alternative methods of increasing the speed of on-foot assault units so as to prevent displaying weakness to the other Legions. Working with the genius of the teachings of Mars and the simple-but-effective methods of the Berserkers, the devices known as "impact thrusters" were developed. Consisting of three high-powered pistons attached to each calf, they operated by firing hard into the ground as the Marine runs, allowing for short bounds between each step. While not as swift as traditional jump packs, there was no risk of overheating from extended use, and could be continuously fired without a worry over fuel. Executioner squads are masters of their usage, using the added momentum to slam their foes to the ground with a vicious shoulder barge before finishing them off with their chainswords.

Okay, foundations for the Executioners (that name will change, but it's not too bad as a stand-in).

Executioners WS:4    BS:4     S:4      T:4     W:1     I:4      A:2     LD:9     Sv:3+

Sergeant        WS:5    BS:4     S:4      T:4     W:1     I:4      A:2     LD:9     Sv:3+

Unit Composition

  • 4 Executioners
  • 1 Sergeant

Unit Type

  • Infantry

Wargear

  • Power armour
  • Two bolt pistols each
  • Frag and krak grenades
  • Hell's Teeth
  • Impact Thrusters

Special Rules

  • LA: BoU

And that's as far as I've gotten so far. Trying not to A- make Destroyer clones, and B- make Reaver/Rampager clones. I'll add more later.

Maybe give them Furious Charge or something to re-roll failed charges? Did you also consider giving them Fleet?..might make them too good though..

Honest question - what do you envisage these specialists as doing? Are they cc monsters like rampagers, more like reavers with a mixed bag but an edge in cc or more like destroyers with less rad and more punch?

I think perhaps having them as WS5 would be fair as quite frankly you've gotta be pretty skilled to bound across a battlefield and shoulder slam someone, before dicing up their guts - all within seconds of each other.

Definitely closer to Reavers. I was actually using their unit entry as a reference for this (and their models for the conversions). I don't wanna touch Destroyers because I think as a unit they're fine, just needing a price drop in an FAQ, so I don't wanna make them pointless, you know?

Taking them in the context of the entire force... These are the guys that break your hand so you can't use your weapon, the (upcoming) Terminators are the ones that take advantage of that gap to cut the head off.

Could do a heavily watered-down version for their token character though. Say like:
Fatiguing Strike - Enemy models hit by an attack with this rule half their initiative value. Gargantuan Creatures, vehicles and models with a T value of 7 or more are immune to this special rule. Not that this does not stack (i.e. a Praetor who suffered two wounds would only reduce their I value once).

Kind of like the old Strikedown?

Okay I'm back. Miserable few days put my miserable Marines on the back burner, but now I must rise again!

Executioners WS:4    BS:4     S:4      T:4     W:1     I:4      A:2     LD:9     Sv:3+

Sergeant        WS:5    BS:4     S:4      T:4     W:1     I:4      A:2     LD:9     Sv:3+

Cost - 150pts

Unit Composition

  • 4 Executioners
  • 1 Sergeant

Unit Type

  • Infantry
  • Infantry, character (sergeant)

Wargear

  • Power armour
  • Two bolt pistols each
  • Frag and krak grenades
  • Hell's Teeth
  • Impact Thrusters

Special Rules

  • LA: BoU
  • Furious Charge
  • Down and Out

Down and Out - If a unit consisting of at least three models that all share this special rule performs a Hammer of Wrath attack, it gains +1 Initiative for that turn

Options

The Squad may take:

  • Up to 10 additional men - 25pts each

Any model may:

  • Replace Hell's Teeth with a heavy chainblade - free

One in every three models may exchange its Hell's Teeth for a:

  • Power weapon - 5pts each
  • Power fist or lightning claw - 10pts each

The sergeant may take any of the following:

  • Artificer armour - 10pts
  • Thunder hammer (replaces Hell's Teeth) - 15pts
  • Melta bombs - 5pts

There we go, minus a proper name for these guys I feel like they're ready. Got what I wanted, a unit that's no more survivable than regular Marines, but can turn your head inside out faster than you can say frankfurters. Feedback, guys!

Everyone seemed too much, every five seemed too few. Every three means at full strength there's potential for five guys with fancy-pants gear, much like a regular assault squad. Just more handsome.

By the order of Slipstreams, I declare this Primarch rules brainstorming session officially OPEN!

The Primarch Raktra Akarro
The White Devil, Berserkerkin, Skyhunter

WS:8    BS:5     S:7      T:6     W:6     I:6      A:6     LD:10     Sv:2+

Cost - (SEVERAL HUNDRED POINTS OF STAB)

Unit Composition

  • 1 (unique)

Unit Type

  • Infantry, character

Wargear

  • (Insert armour name)
  • The Grinder
  • Heartworm
  • Frag grenades
  • Impact Thrusters

Special Rules

  • Primarch
  • Heaven's Judgement
  • Sire of the Berserkers of Uran
  • (Stuff)

Armour - 2+/4++
Heartworm - Archeotech pistol, 18" range

The Grinder - RNG:- S:+1 AP:2 Melee, Specialist Weapon, Grind, Sunder
Grind - Invulnerables saves taken against a weapon with this rule are reduced by 2 (so a 4++ would become a 6++ etc)

Sire of the Berserkers - Ignores enemy FNP rolls in close combat, wounds caused by Raktra cannot be recovered by any means (keep track of how many wounds he himself inflicted on an enemy model), [insert army-wide bonuses]

Heaven's Judgement - despite being Fearless, Raktra still has to take Fear tests to see if his WS is reduced vs Sanguinius.

First ideas down, whilst struggling to avoid making him the second coming of Angron. Have at me, brothers.

So, he Ignores FNP and It Will Not Die? Seems VERY Powerful for a Primarch considering thats what hes going to be going up against too.

Heavens Judgement is cool, very fluffy.

Stats look Ok to me on a first pass too.

Since he has the Title Skyhunter, why not let his Sire Rule give Skyfire to one squad/vehicle of your choice once per turn? And let them hit Flyers on a 5+ instead of 6s when shooting at them normally?

I think it would fit well with his theme of "Where Angels Fear to Tread".

I hear you on the IWND thing, I was throwing that in as an extension of the "found your weak point" theme I had going. Any idea for a replacement?

The idea for Sire is great, really keen on it. I wonder, would Hatred (jump units) or something similar be too much?
