Which weapon for a Libby ?

The title says it all ! Among the different Force Weapons, I'm wondering which one is the most interesting for a Librarian to wield.

The specific Librarian in question will be ML2 and have a Jump Pack, and be attached with a squad of 10 assault Marines with Veteran with Power Fist and a flamer, as well as a Captain with the Teeth of Terra.

In terms of powers, I'll roll on different disciplines each battle depending on the enemies I'm facing, but Telepathy and Biomancy sound like the two most generic choices I'll pick.

I was leaning on the Force Staff because it seems like the most generalist weapon there, but I can't wait to hear how you guys run your Libbys !

Depending on your codex or expansion, look at the relic force weapons first. There are a few that are better...otherwise...staves are good vs demons and bugs or big orks. Axes or swords are better vs marines.

Ming hit the basics.  Another important considerations is if you're actually going to take Biomancy.  Biomancy is special because Iron Arm in 7th Edition grants a Strength bonus and Smash, which in turn makes your melee attacks strike at AP1.  So a staff with Biomancy makes your Libby hit at S9 AP1 in close combat, which is doubly insane because you can get a bonus attack for a pistol and its at your regular Initiative (neither of which occur with a power fist or similar).

Unless you've got a good Invulnerable save, I stay away from axes; the Initiative penalty makes them unattractive for me.  Normally I stick with swords, but even without Biomancy a staff is still a really solid weapon against most armies.

Here are my librarians:

  • Terminator Librarian: Storm Shield & Force Axe. On the rare occasion that I go terminator librarian, I'm pretty confident that with a 2+ and a 3++, the Unwieldy USR is a decent trade for +2 S and AP 2 on a Force Weapon.
  • Jump Pack Librarian: Force Sword. I wanted the best "all round" weapon, given that a librarian that fast and mobile is probably going to be acting as a mobile troublestabber - going where the trouble is and stabbing it.
  • Foot Librarian: Force Stave. I really wanted the Concussive USR so he could help the hammernators he hangs out with to suffer less from the Unwieldy weapons they use.

If I had a biker librarian, I'd probably give him a force lance.

Wow, thanks for all the intel guys ! :) For information, I play with the regular C:SM codex !

My meta is very, very diverse... I have virtually every army type represented save from the Dark Eldars but something tells me that that's about to change...

I think the staff is the safest choice then... Ferrum got me at S9 AP1 with Iron Arm, I'll just roll on Biomancy against Marines or any army with a widepsread 3+ :p

I always run a force axe because a force sword is too weak to kill chaff units and isnt strong enough to land wounds on MCs to ID em. But with a axe I can cut down chaff and its much easier to wound monsters and I can actually wound the wraithknight. But I run mine with 5 black knights and 2 iron hands chapter masters so hes really there to cast prescience or use force to 1 shot something with t6+ ans a save (cause the rad grenade allows me to ID t5 models with the thunder hammers)

Yeah. Your codex really matters. I'm coming from the Blood Angels codex, which really changes our calculations (for example, it's not at all hard for me to get my librarian +1 S on the charge turn...), which explains why I'm largely over the power axe, except on a super durable libby (ie. terminator armored).

Furious Charge does help :p

On a side note, is it worth it to take a ML1 Libby instead of an ML2, assuming he's the only Psyker in your army ? ML2 brings more warp charge and more flexibility in terms of which powers you can use, but I don't know if it's worth the cost...

No such thing as far as I know.  Not every power weapon has a force weapon derivative; I'm pretty sure that the only specific force weapons statted in the BWB are the sword, axe, and staff.

You might be right about that.

I mean, I'd probably model him that way, but I think you're right and I'd have to chose for it to be a force sword or a force axe on a game-by-game basis.

Which is too bad... force lances would be awesome.

I think the weapon depends mostly on what you expect to find on the board and the AP and toughness of your libby's target. If your going to point him at basic troops I choose the staff for wounding on 2's and ID low AP MC's thanks to Force(elder, IG). If your aiming him at high AP units I choose the axe.

The Staff is a great all-rounder.

As is the Sword, but more so if you mainly fight MEQ. A Legion era Libby would get a sword from me.

An Axe is better if you plan for this guy to be a head-hunter, sucking the souls out of big bads like the Riptide, enemy HQ's or Carnifex's etc.
