Salamanders 2nd Company - Armour flame tutorial on pg 8

Greetings, Brothers! I'm new to the B&C and so thought it would be great to introduce my own army with a WIP log - mainly to motivate me to paint more...also to get some useful feedback and hopefully some advice about how to improve my technique.

I've been playing Sallies with the same army since 4th edition (back when you could have 2 special weapons in a tactical squad and could force an extra turn) and have decided to give the army an update. Basically I'm starting again because I can't bare to look at my awful models from when I was 16, so these are an improvement msn-wink.gif

The colour scheme is based on Forgeworld's, as seen in Imperial Armour 9-10. So, instead of GW's 'snot green', I've gone for the more muted green, which in my opinion looks better. Let me know your thoughts! smile.png

I'm one of those hobbyists who buys something then paints it before getting anything else, I hate having boxes and sprues lying around. Progress therefore is quite slow but I'm hoping this log will force me to speed up a bit. For now though, I'll drip-feed in what I've already done....

So without further ado!

Captain Pellas Mir'san

As you can see, I used the FW Praetor in Mk3 power armour model, and swapped out the archaeotech for a basic combiflamer. The cape of drake hide is a Dark Elf Corsair cloak, sanded down to fit beneath a normal mk7 power pack.

More to come!

Best wishes,

Damn. That is lovely. The small flames on the leg armour segments, the cloak, the black skin, the muted green armour... wub.png

Any chance you'd share that armour recipe?

Thanks Ludo! It looks even nicer from 3 feet away ;)

The armour is straight-forward enough a recipe:

Undercoat - Black

Base - Thraka Green

Wash - Nuln Oil

Layer - Thraka Green

Highlight 1 - Loren Forest

Highlight 2 - Straken Green

Final HL 3 - Nurgling Green

Vallejo Matt Varnish to finish.

YOU MANIAC!!

ARGH SOMEBODY STOP ME! ;)

There are those who prefer to buy everything, then build it before painting it....blush.png

Ah thanks though, I've been keeping tabs on your Marines Errant too, looking great!

Managed to persuade my phone to take a semi-decent picture of the Company Standard Bearer! More FW goodies combined with the Command Squad kit. In imperial armour 9/10 the Salamanders Veterans are portrayed with golden helms...thought it looked a bit daft tbh, so I went half way and just painted the face plate with Runelord Brass.

The standard 'topper' is actually from a metal Vulkan Hes'tan kit, looks better on the banner than on the Forgefather's backpack I reckon! Except I need more practice painting 3D flames!

@Deathspectre - Thanks! :D

Thank you all for the interest and very kind comments! :)

@Toyship - The gold is Runelord brass, washed with Agrellan Earth, followed by a gentle highlight with runefang steel.

@Knight of the Raven - I'm glad you like him :D I couldn't think of a better model to use - his pose out of the box is so calm and wise-looking, and the face looks nice and old. I've always imagined Pellas Mir'san as the 'Allan Quatermain' (as portrayed by Sean Connery) of the Salamanders, so if I went back and did the model again I'd try and find a nice bearded head to use! ;)

The rest (bar one) of the command squad is here - I'm still thinking about how best to do a company champion - I'm trying to find a suitable lizardmen Saurus Warrior shield to use for a combat shield! Don't suppose anyone here has one without any 'aztec-y' bits on it at all? I have bits to trade, so PM me if you're interested! :D

Random guy with comms gear and flamer bearer:

Aaaand the Apothecary, this guy was the first one of the new army that I painted. I went all-white for the apothecary mainly to see how it looked, i'm quite pleased with the white and the odd green section of armour helps bind him to the rest of the army. What are people's opinions on fully-whitened apothecaries (note how careful I was with my wording there ;) ) ?

Thanks again for all your kind comments, they're very encouraging! :)

Very nice indeed. The muted green and minimal flames work well, and mean that the large area of yellow>red on the banner really pops! Very appropriate as a focal point for the army too!

Edit: Ninja'd! The blood on the Apothecary is great, again really subtly done!

Okay, I have to say that I am not usually a fan of Salamanders (one of my least favorite legions/1st foundings), but yours I REALLY like. The green is not eye watering, the flame and gold details are beautiful and the banner is very well done. Consider me a follower.

Hello again, back with a couple more pics of the Sallies. Thanks again for all your feedback :D

@Strike Captain Lysimachus; I've always loved the imagery associated with space marine banner bearers, I hardly ever see them so really wanted to include one myself. I'm glad you approve of him! Much obliged :)

@Anaziel; Glad you can appreciate them. If you don't mind me asking purely out of interest, what is it that puts you off the Salamanders normally? I agree with our feelings regarding the normal green, I think it suits chapters like the Sons of Medusa but is too bright for the likes of a first founding chapter :)

@Knight of the Raven; Haha yeah the FW 'coney' flamers look strange to me, I prefer the ALIENS style GW flamers ;) Certainly not, here you go :) :

...It's from the devastator squad kit i think, I took the signum off the top. I imagined it like a sort of radar-dome thing.

@Kurgan the Lurker; I really like that apothecary - what is the significance of the red do you know? Might have to repaint mine now!

@Machinepriest; have no fear, here is the aforementioned assault marine with one of his buddies in 1st assault squad! :D

As always, more to come...forgive me for milking out 2 squads but I've nearly finished my Stormtalon and need to stall for time ;)

Thanks for looking! :D
