Starting Guard

Recommended Posts

So, I am starting to work on a list for IG (AM). I have played mostly marine armies over the years but have always liked the Guard. The army list in the link below is the jumping off point and I would appreciate any advice or thoughts on the list. What could be better? What is good? Thoughts on general tactics, etc.

Thanks for taking a look!

Welcome to the Guard Wulfgar :) As you have two topics, the Army Lists one should be used for discussion of the list and we can talk about general bits and tactical ideas here :)

You can save money by purchasing the box sets especially if you find an online retailer, have you thought about a colour scheme for your Guard yet? What about a general theme to start with such as a mechanised company, or tank army? The Guard codex is very versatile so you can do quite a bit with it but judging from your proposed list I'm assuming you'd like a more balanced army?

Your list has a good number of troopers in that should serve you well for future lists but what about further additions? Would you add any flyers to the list?

As for tactics a balanced list needs to work together but this is usually straightforward enough for Guard. Your cheap infantry squads hold the line and protect the rest of your army as they do most of the killing - the question is how they do the killing! Tanks are great for adding durability and fire power to your list but are vulnerable to close attacks so keep your troopers nearby so they can offer mutual protection.

The box set will be my first purchase as I can see a use for everything in the set. I think a balanced list is the way to go when starting an army but I would like the list to be able to at least old it's own in tournaments. I favor a combined arms approach favoring mech with tank support.

As far as color scheme goes, I have a couple of ideas. One is urban camo, one is desert camo and the third is gray uniform with red kit. I am still working on the fluff.

The fluff can come later :) We've quite a few desert schemes now so you can look around for inspiration, or there's always real life to take from. Hybrid lists are arguably easier to work with and more flexible so that's a good choice to start with.

Welcome to the Astra Milliwhatnow Wulfgar ;)

The fluff can wait although I feel it is the main reason for the models you have or want to buy. I much prefer the fluffy army to a tournament list, it just appeals to me...

The first thing you need to sort out is the colour scheme. It is heart destroying to paint loads of models then change your mind and have to go to stripping your previous scheme and repainting. It is just a waste of time and money. Look around on the web or here for ideas and check out historic real life schemes to try to recreate such as my chocochip cam from GW1, choose a couple of schemes you like then try them on a couple of tester models before fully committing. The initial schemes you choose may be too hard or time intensive or just may not look good to you...

Once you have settled on a scheme we will, of course, expect photographic proof!

So after doing a little bit of thinking and some research I think that I am going to go with a Fallschirmjager like color scheme for the infantry and then a variation of gray for the vehicles. I am looking at a WW2 theme for the list.

I'm going to try to get a test model done today.

Sorry that the pic is a bit blurry. I had to use my iPad to take the pic since my camera is acting up. Anyhow, this is the sample scheme for the infantry. Nothing too fancy and easy to do. This guy took about 20 minutes so if I use an assembly line method I can crank out a squad pretty quickly.

Thoughts?

I know you where trying for Fallschirmjäger

but it reminds me more of British paratroops and the Dension camouflage smocks ;)

It does look a lot like the Red Devils. The image on the far right is sort of what I was going for. I'll do up another test model today for a side by side comparison.

It is always a question of scale when you are trying to paint real life camouflage schemes. By that I mean that if you tried to paint the scheme to scale then it would be far too fiddly to paint. On a model you have to up scale the pattern just like you did or like my chocochip.

Good job. I like it :)
