1850 Iron Warriors

My store plays A LOT of 40K, but there is a small group of us working on trying to get some 30K going. With that being said this is where I'm starting out. The idea is to do a 30K army, but one close enough to 40K so that I can play with both era's. I figured 1850 was a good point level to start out at, as it is te ussual 40K point level. I know I'll be missing some of the flavor of 30K, but I plan on using many parts of that era as well.

So without further rambling, here it is:

Right of War:

Hammer of Olympia

HQ:

Kyr Valen

Centurian Master of the Signals with Power Axe, Artificer Armor, and Refractor Field

Troops:

10 man Tactical Squad in Rhino

10 man Tactical Squad in Rhino

10 man Breacher Squad, two Melta Guns, Sarge with Thunder Hammer, Apocathary

Heavy:

Sicaran with Heavy Bolters

Vindicator with Dozer Blade

Predator Squad (2) with Autocannon and Lascannons

Spartan with Armored Ceremite

Plan:

Breachers with both HQ's go into the Spartan and push forward into the teath of the enemy while the Tacticals move to flank and encircle. The Predators will stay in my deployment zone to make full use of Kyr's special ability, idealy using cover to make them harder to take out. The Vindicator and Sicaran will act as a safety net / finisher, moving to take on targets of opportunity.

It lacks flyer defence, all I can hope for is the twin link on the Spartan and the re-roll of 1's on the predators plus the Sicaran is enough to sneak a lascannon through on a flyer if I deem it needed. For the most part I'm going to try to ignore them and rely on my armor. I feel it isn't to over the top on 30K rules, and in fact should feel a decent bit like some 3rd Edition Iron Warriors to the old hands, but it also helps introduce the 40K guys to some of the 30K rules.

I also realize having the Master of Signals isn't the best choice of HQ's, but I have the model built, and I fully expect him to be essential once I decide to go with a more infantry based army. I expect he will fit in lovely with a squad of Iron Havoks. He does still have the Centurion stat line and will be able to swing the Power Axe very nicely, plus the bombardment will be a nice surprise shot if needed.

So, thoughts?

So just putting it down in writing has made me change it slightly...

The Master of Signals just doeesn't fit well, so I'll save him for later. I'll run with a Primaris Medicae instead as that model also looks good. This will also allow me to put Melta Bombs on the squads, and upgrade the Sicaran to Lascannons.

New list:

Right of War:

Hammer of Olympia

HQ:

Kyr Valen

Centurian Primus Medicae with Artificer Armor, Thunder Hammer, Refractor Field

Troops:

10 man Tactical Squad, Sarge with Melta Bombs in Rhino

10 man Tactical Squad, Sarge with Melta Bombs in Rhino

10 man Breacher Squad, two Melta Guns, Sarge with Power Axe, Melta Bombs

Heavy:

Sicaran with Lascannons

Vindicator with Dozer Blade

Predator Squad (2) with Autocannon and Lascannons

Spartan with Armored Ceremite

So, new thoughts? :)

So I ran this against a drop pod 40k Pedro army. Lost a very close game. My thoughts were this:

1) To early to judge the viability of that many tanks, especially against a drop list with what seemed like 4,000,000 melta guns.

2) The Spartan with Armored Ceremite is tough as nails, so tough he just ignored it.

3) Breachers are awesome, as long as you don't lose the sarge with the power axe. Once he goes you lose the ability to reliable kill anything in assualt. I lost him to a failed armor save from an exploding drop pod he melta bombed.

4) Kyr is sexy, awesome, good. He would single handed kill off a combat squad of marines in one round of combat, yes I rolled above average, but still. 5 attacks on the charge with a relic blade is no joke.

5) The Sicaran is worth every point, and reliably killed stuff.

With that much armor I would consider a midfield interdictior (IE: deep strike stopper) unit.

Edit: You have 4 'good' choices: Iron Havocs with an augary scanner, Support squad with auguary scanner, a Contemptor Mortis, or a predator exterminator with the command tank upgreydd. All 4 have their ups and downs.

Since you're rocking Kyr Valen and Hammer of Olympia you have some additional tricks. Thanks to his special rules, you can essentially give +1 BS to a unit in your deployment zone in addition to giving a fortification a +1 cover save or +1AV. Grabbing a fortification, putting it in your deployment zone, and then parking Havocs with missile launchers gives you a BS5 3++ unit with tank hunters and -1 to enemy cover saves. You could do the same with a support squad and plasma cannons- this is only BS4, but you'll still get a 3+ cover save and are almost guranteed to do mean painful things to anybody who deepstrikes within 18" of your 5 plasma cannons.
