Knight-Captain Elam

His weapon profile says it s a AP3 weapon but has smash. Now the rule book states that any weapon with this rule has an AP of 2. Now I am confused. Also there is an "*" next to smash with additional rules for this weapon. Can anyone clarify for me please?

The rules for this character are 6th edition rules.  The weapon's smash is not the same as the rulebook smash, and no mention of AP2 is included (as detailed in the section the * refers to).  Until the character gets updated to 7th edition (where this will likely be changed) the rules are as listed on his profile.

In other words although his weapon has "smash" it isn't the smash USR detailed in the BWB, it is a different special rule with the same name.

Wouldn't this also mean the BA still get +1I (old FC) and 4+ FNP (but not against AP1/2)?

No, because they have a listed USR with no expressed definition in their codex. You are referred to the main rulebook for its definition, which means that as soon as the rulebook is changed / updated, the new version of the rule immediately takes precedence.

In the case of this FW character, he has 'his weapons' version of smash defined in his unit entry. So this effectively becomes a "Codex" > Rulebook situation.

Correct, that little * after "smash" then has a note right after it detailing what exactly it does. They really should have renamed it in the FAQ. It's not like GW hasn't done the same with the Necron gear.
