Knights Panthera sound better, you're right :)

How about we try out some Frank names or concepts as well ? We might find something interesting there. There's not much to be found easily on the internet about the mythology, but taking inspiration from their descendants (the French), I can't really see them using the imagery of the national animal there.

There's something about the Blazing Roosters or the Blazing Cocks that just sounds very wrong :p

I did suggest either the Red or Black Huscarls initially, though Huscarls are more of an Anglo-saxon or Norse thing.  Though the later franks were fairly into the early feudal stuff so the Knights portion of Knights Panthera could refer to that side of their heritage.

I like Knights Panthera, it's a good mixture of both aspects. The knight part for the fuedalism, which could mean heritage and heraldry are important to the chapter; then the Panthera part as a 40kisation of Jaguar, the animal that distinguished the top warriors of Aztec society. It also represented nobility (somewhat tying [sp?] into the fuedalism aspect) of Aztec society.

So off that, their may be an air of nobility surrounding the chapter. I don't know if that would mean the chapter would go Ultramarines bling'd out or what, but perhaps they may be a bit humanitarian. Maybe to the same extant as the Salamanders, it could fit since the chapter's sacrificial ceremonies are held with the general populous in attendance. It could be a form of honouring their roots, a connection to their pre-post-humanity if you will.

In regards to names from Frankish origin, we could definitely use some names if the chapter ever turns to Slaanesh *cough*Golden Cocks*cough*. But on a serious note, are Gryphons prevalent in the culture? I suspect if we take a step back, and look at the mythical creatures of a general germanic origin we could refine that to fit our needs as well. Unicorns, anyone? :p

Didn't someone make a Unicorns chapter?

I'm not sure, but it could be a cool idea if done right. It wouldn't be Pretty/Brony marines. And let me be the first to say no pastels if we decide to use the Unicorn.

I agree that unicorns can be a lot other than pretty and feminine, though I don't have any particular rancor to those who enjoy them in that manner. A unicorn chapter could be all about uncompromising purity, kind of like the Red Scorpions, but with an added moralizing factor.

Though, I don't think that this particular chapter is going in that direction.

Could always use some themes in a less over arching manner. Just an example, maybe the unicorn is incorporated into the heraldry of some captain or element of the chapter focused on rigorous personal purification.

Perhaps it is the symbol of the Chaplaincy, emphasing purity of mind and soul?

I know I'm a little late, but the name "Reaper Knights" just jumped out at me. Even if you don't use this for the chapter name, use it for the veterans or some formation in the chapter, else I will commandeer that name for my own purposespirate.gif .

Also, I believe that oak trees were important among the Franks and Germanic tribes, due to their tendency to be struck by lightening (which is why oaks were associated with both Thor and Zeus). So maybe something like the Oaken Sons or the Oaken Knights or even the Kights of Thor. And you could call their Librarians "The Lightening-struck".

What do you think?

There is a fantasy battle knightly order called the knights panther. As I recall they acquired their panther imagery after a period of crusading in hot countries.

We could roll with something along the lines of the chapter being originally founded on a Saxon/Frankish feudal world and then in their early history (possibly in their first campaign) conquering/recapturing an Aztec style jungle death world and expanding their recruitment there as well. Over the generations, the blood sacrifice traditions of the one culture mingle with the honourable combat and respect for martial prowess of the other, and voila, we have the Panthera Astra, or Knights Panther.

Other things to consider:

the Latin name of the jaguar is Panthera Onca.

Saxons and franks made extensive use of many types of animal based imagery... A good amount of most later heraldic tradition stems from their practices. If they saw a wild beast that particularly impressed them they would often incorporate it into their artwork and literature.

Other animals important to the Aztecs were eagles and serpents.

The idea of a reaper fits well with prisoner taking in general. Possibly a good name for an elite unit?

That could make sense : 1st company Veterans are the ones with the most captures among all the battle brothers, so that would be a very appropriate nickname !

Giving Names or nicknames to other companies is something we sould definitely do, but later on in the concept stage.

Knights Panthera are starting to grow on me more and more, still keeping the Aztec inspiration while still paying tribute to the Frank/Saxons honour code and battle tactics (which were heavily drawn from the Romans', hence a good tie to the Ultramarines).

Knights Pantera is my favorite so far, Panthera Astra is kinda cool (but on obvious take from Carcharadon Astra). But I think Knights Panthera might be as theme-y as we get, short of naming the chapter Knights-who-kidnap-enemies-for-sacrifice.

The Carcharadon Astra is the reason why I want to avoid Panthera Astra. Not that I have anything against the Carcharadon, just wanting to avoid to similar a name.

Oh, I agree. Since the space sharks are the only chapter with that name it feels like to much of a copy and paste for me.

On a side note, I like the idea we have going for giving each company and specialist group nicknames. Maybe this extends down to the squad level aswell? I know we're not at that phase yet, but it's just food for thought for the moment.

I have no problem with Knights Panethera, but I'd like to point out that lots of chapters have similar names. Imperial Fists and Crimson Fists, for example. Red Talons and Brazen Claws. I don't think it would be a problem.

Imperial Fists and Crimson Fists work for me because the CF were originally made up of brothers of the IF (bad logic, I know) And Red Talons and Brazen Claws are just different enough to sound dissimilar. Like if this chapter were to be descended from the Carcharadon Astra, or even the Raven Guard, then I would be less hesitant to use Panthera Astra.

Keeping with the "Astra" idea, there's also Solar Pantheras. We kind of miss the Frank/Saxon theme and go more towards the sun civilization of the Aztecs, but we keep the idea of celestial bodies or space in general.

I prefer Knights Panthera to Solar Pantheras. The name sounds cool, has nods to both our main influences and fits well within the style of chapter names.
