So I busted out my Stormclaw figures again and I'm planning on putting them together with one of the new SM Tactical boxes to put together a unit of Blood Claws (5 men - Melta), Grey Hunters (5 men - Melta), and Grey Hunters (10 men - Gun line + Plasma).

I was looking at painting them and realized that I don't really like the "blue" tone overall on them and would like a more "stormy" grey color. I'd like to keep a bit of the blue though to give it that appearance, so I don't want to go down to Mechanicus Standard Grey.

I was considering doing a 1:1 The Fang:Dawnstone base color, with Dawnstone primary highlight and spot/secondary highlights with either Administratum Grey or a 1:1 Administratum:Fenrisian Grey.

So, has anyone actually done anything like this? Thoughts on the possible color combination?

An other idea is to get the blue tint from a wash. I base coat mechanicus standard grey, dry brush lightly with vallejo cold grey which is very similar to codex grey I think. Then I do a wash of the army painter black brown and blue mixed 1:1:1 . They're amazing washes that don't pool on flat surfaces and go into recesses far better. I have also tried bading cold grey and highlighted with vallejo stonewall grey then washed it black but found it too stark a contrast and quite washed out

That's what I'd recommend too.  Blue wash.

I have a couple recipes I quite like. One is a mix of GW and Vallejo paints ending up with a kind of turquoise-blue-grey, e.g. the fang plus dark reaper plus VMA dark grey blue for the darkest areas. The other one I have started playing with is a little more straightforward - VMA dark grey blue, then dark sea grey, medium sea grey, pale grey blue, and ulthuan grey.

Alright, thanks guys! Keep the ideas coming and I'm going to see if I can play with a couple of things (although I'll be honest skeletoro, turquoise is definitely not what I want to go for, looking for more grey than blue - thank you much for the advice though).

I'll likely just use this area for my WiP thread.

Sigur has done a step by step on how he paints his wolves. Its about 2 years old and on his blog. Give me half an hour and I'll dig it up.

Looks easy enough to follow. He is a blimmin' good painter, so definitely worth a peak if you want grey armourwith a tint of blue.

Here it goes: http://sigur.tableto...inting-article/

blood red and gold trim....

totally not normal space wolf colours.

Thanks a bunch guys! I think I finally settled on a base color of 1:1 mix of The Fang:Eshin Grey, which gives a little brighter color than Eshin Grey, but a darker blue grey that pure The Fang does. I've then edge highlighted the model with The Fang, then progress up to a smaller edge highlight with Dawnstone, and a final spot edge highlight with Administratum Grey.

I think it looks pretty nice (similar color to Sigur's somewhat I think), but I'll try and get some pics up this evening or tomorrow to get some C&C.

So wasn't able to get my Blood Claw done in the schedule I thought, but here he is, ready for glory except for his base and company marking.

Here's the first Blood Claw for some C&C:
gallery_59244_10222_20839.jpggallery_59244_10222_48545.jpg
gallery_59244_10222_74082.jpggallery_59244_10222_78805.jpg

I liked the idea of a dark red background for the company marking, both to give it a little difference from Krom Dragongaze's marking for times when I don't want to use Krom as himself (I plan to make some alternative weapons for him) and because I just thought it looked better than the plain armor color.

I also tried something I attempted before with the backpack vents, trying to make them appear that heat has been making the metal glow. However, now that I post them, I realize that I have the colors backward. The inner core should be yellow, while the outer portion should fade from orange to red.

gallery_59244_10222_10757.jpg
Thoughts? Does it look good enough to leave, or does it just seem odd?

I love the scheme!! It makes me wish I chose a lighter armor color than I did!!

The vents look pretty cool to me, but yes it appears the effect is backwards. But, still looks good!!

Little late I know.

Storm wolf is unfinished. the colours you see are mostly pale blue grey on the top and medium sea grey on the side. The blood claws are using the other scheme I described.

Thanks man, appreciate it. I like the stormy/slate blue-grey it came out as, but I definitely won't be doing the blue banding highlights on the upright cylindrical portions of the legs again, just the line highlighting. Looking forward to doing some other guys!

I think I'll just leave the vents on this guy and make sure to switch them around on the later ones.

Thanks skeletoro! I think that's a little brighter blue than I want, but it does look cool. Now I'm on the hunt for a color that most closely matches the one I made by mixing so I don't have to keep having different shades on each member of my packs. LOL

:tu: Ludovic!

Is the blue comment re: my guy?

He should have a darkish grey base coat with a blue tint to it, but it shouldn't be like The Fang or brighter. I did use The Fang as an edge highlight though, and on his legs and helm I tried to get a cylindrical highlight (which I won't be doing again), so it is possible that looks blue. I did still want some blue tint, but a darker color than The Fang and not highlighted up to the baby blue that I consider Fenrisian & Russ Grey.

Alright, so in the 6 minutes before the new year rolled over, I managed to get the Wolf Guard Pack Leader for this squad of Bloodclaws as far as I'm taking him for the time being (which may be a little farther if I can get a couple of suggestions or agreement):

gallery_59244_10222_35524.jpg gallery_59244_10222_59570.jpg

gallery_59244_10222_31993.jpg gallery_59244_10222_10795.jpg

gallery_59244_10222_23172.jpg

So, there are definitely a couple of things left to do:

- the wolf pelt's claws need to be touched up (I think some of the paint rubbed off on some of the claws) - as does some of the lightest grey down near the claws

- I don't really like the thickness of the highlight above the breathing grill

- there's no backpack topper or power weapon effect on his blade

I like the armor color, mixing a big batch to keep consistency across my models will hopefully help a lot (and I have like 30 mL of it mixed too - so it should go a long way).  The gold turned out well, I tried doing two things for this guy: I added some spot highlighting of Auric Armor Gold to it at the very end, and also added full edging with a plain metallic/iridescent medium (no color added) on forte's suggestion.  I also like how the Wolf Guard pack marking turned out, but now I have the conundrum of "Do all my WGPLs come from the same pack, or should I take the opportunity to make up some new markings?"  I also really like the way the wolf pelt turned out, but I didn't go broad enough with the dark grey in the center, it should have continued out more.  I'm hoping to do a little different pelt coloration each time I do a Wolf with fur on it, so I've got a chance to improve some.

The power weapon part is where I'd like to hear some options, because I've run them around in my head, and I'm not really sure what I want to go with.  The model is already pretty blue, so I've almost dismissed blue or blue-green/teal/turquoise power effects out of hand.  I know they are pretty common, and would likely be easier to do, but I'm not sure the effect would really be what I want to go for on the model and I don't think it would stand out that much.  I do red power weapon effects on my Stoneburners, and I think they can look pretty decent, but I was thinking of doing something a little different this time around.  I don't think green power effects would do that well against the blue, but I'd probably be surprised, however, I was planning on trying my hand at some green power weapon effects on my Angels Encarmine models (since it should contrast well with the deep red I'll be using).  That leaves me thinking about yellow power weapon effects (which I'm not sure I'd want to propagate across all of my models, and reminds me of yellow snow for some odd reason) and my wife's suggestion of "Why not try and do an icy blue-white effect on them?" which would actually match the "ice powers" vibe that GW has gone all out with this Codex.

So I'd actually like to hear some thoughts.  Merits of different power field effect colors for the sword?

Options:

1. Blue

2. Blue-green/turquoise

3. Red

4. Green

5. Yellow

6. Attempt at icy blue-white

Also, does he need a backpack topper, or is he ornate enough as he is?  He's probably the Wolf-iest of what is going to appear on this squad (I'm going with the idea that the Bloodclaws, while less restrained, are also the most likely to have the newest suits of armor without as many totems, etc., dangling from it... they add those as time goes on - so hopefully more bare heads in this squad, more plain armor) so I'm wondering if he's "good enough" or does he need an additional icon?

I'm also waiting on the newly named Battle Brother Ludovic (who now uses a moniker I really can't remember how to spell) to give me an answer to my question.  ;)

Looking very nice.

As to your questions I'd suggest a blue or blue-white just because I think those are the most like what a disruptor field would look like. However given that the Space Wolves have so much blue/grey already I personally go with green for most of my power weapons though in this case I think red would look best. It would provide a stark contrast with the rest of the model and provide a nice detail color to really help the blade and the model pop artistically.

I also think with the pelt it's probably ornate enough to stand out as the Pack Leader but a backpack topper would only help the model stand out even more, especially on the tabletop.

Question, where is the power sword from? I don't' recognize that bit.

Thanks Joasht! The grey is a 1:1 mix of Eshin Grey:The Fang (with about 8 mL of W&N Flow Improver to help keep it damp and aid in mixing and thinning for use - mixed an entire pot each of The Fang and Eshin Grey in a 45 mL mixing pot), then line/edge highlighted with The Fang, Dawnstone, then Administratum Grey.

Looking very nice.

Thanks Vash! I really think it is going to come down to a dead heat between red and ice blue->white. Just can't make a decision right now. :D. Also like your thoughts on the pack topper, thanks!

The front chest plate, arms and the power sword all come from the new Tactical Squad kit, and I cut off the hand and pistol and attached them because I wanted a couple more Wolfy bits on this guy.

To (finally) answer your question: the grey isn't as blue as the baby blue we usually see, but it looked somewhat strange. Better in the most recent pictures, but my brain seems to be a bit confused at the colour. It's nor here, nor there. Nor really blue, but nor is it really grey. It's really strange, and rather frustrating that I can't really explain it. Might be the fatigue though, or the rather joyous New Year's celebrations... I think I might need to go and report to the local Inquisition for a quick check-up

But anyway, don't change anything just because my brain is (temporarily) wired up backwards! The rest of the model looks really good and the colours go well together :)

Lastly, my new screen name is shorter than the old one, so should be (technically) easier to remember! :P

I was looking at Bowlzee's Emperors Children and he mentioned a tutorial he was using for his power weapons.

I am thnking to give it a go, but I reckon it would work really well with purple, green or turquoise, I am going to stick with blue for the icy goodness effect :)

I suck and never said thanks! Valerian, I appreciate it, I really do, a full year later! I hope you like the below additions as well!

dantay, I think I am also going to go with an ice blue weapon field as much as possible for my Wolves. My Force weapons for my other Chapters are going to end up a mix of green and purple. We'll see what I can pull off.

So it's been over a year since the Drakeslayers received any love, but my Blood Claws pack has finally received some reinforcements in the form of a mix of the SW sprue, a SM Tactical Squad, and a sprue from Betrayal at Calth.

They are only base coated now, no shading at all except for the rune stone on the last guy (and honestly, I'm not sure what the heck I did just that one for):
med_gallery_59244_10222_148546.jpg
(Large version of the image in my gallery)

Really looking forward to getting these guys finished, because they will contain the most bare faces/heads I have ever done for any squad of Marines (three compared to the previous one each)! It will likely drive me insane.

And I hope this keeps making Dos's brain hurt trying to figure out the color!

I have a similar color scheme and have decided to use red / orange / yellow (superheated type effect) for my power weapons, blues / whites for frost weapons, and greens for force weapons. Just a thought.

I like the contrast with the power weapons and fitting for frozen death world. The frost weapons I am going with the diamond concept (when I get there) and the force weapons (again in time) are a nod to the Fenris "summers".

My skills are nowhere near yours but I have a few things up in my gallery.
