Looking for Suggestions on 2 Ideas

Recommended Posts

So i need some opinions on 2 ideas i have.

1) i want to create a Ultramarines successor chapter that was founded for the purpose of finding a way to stop the tyrannids completely.  as such they would be mobile and almost exclusively fight tyrannids.

2) i want to create a chapter that has a fortress monastery that is a mobile star fort.  i dont know if this would work best for a new chapter, or one of my unfinished DIYs.  i also dont know if this would fit the idea in #1.

my DIYs - http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/tags/forums/TheLordMarshal/

i brainstormed this color scheme, but i dont know if it works for a chapter dedicated to tyrannid fighting

I would apprecriate any thoughts on this.

Nit pick: the last Founding was before the Tyranids were identified, so no chapters have been created specifically for that function.

However given what Behemoth did to Ultramar its entirely plausible (and pretty logical) a fresh-faced Ultramarine successor chapter would make Tyranid hunting its life's work. Maybe even have their home world be destroyed by the Tyranids (and to their shame they simply let it happen for the greater good, so they could focus on defending Maccrage), giving them even more reason to hunt them through space.

And as SlaveToDarkness says I don't see there being a contradiction between mobile Nid hunters and being based in a star fort.

Though, I'd say that if you wanted to be mobile 'Nid hunters, a star fort might be a bad idea. They don't move very well. What about some kind of enormous fortress-like battlebarge that, while gigantic and designed to mostly sit there and act as a mobile base, is still technically a space ship with a Warp engine and a community of Navigators and everything. Star forts need to be towed through the Warp - not very heroic.

well right i figured that given this threat it would be reasonable to assume that a new founding would have a chapter dedicated to that purpose.

that was my concern.  yea is a fortressy chapter barque a better idea?

The Phalanx certainly matches your description. If The Lord Marshal has the writing skills, he can explain how the Ultramarines got their hands on a star-fort whose size and sheer firepower can compare to the Imperial Fists' fortress-monastery.

(I once had ideas to kitbash the Phalanx by attaching a battleship's engines to one arm of the cross that forms a Ramilles class star-fort's superstructure, for Battlefleet Gothic.)

no no no i will not try to make something equal to The Phalanx. this is a modern successor chapter after all and that would not be realistic even in 40k. now something along the lines of something similar to a Ramilles or of completely unique construction is fair as long as it doesnt try and make a Phalanx. this concept is more on have my own Ramilles fort of sorts.

What if they were initially created to combat Genestealers? That gives you quite a few options for a founding date, but would also be a perfect reason for the chapter to be fleet based as it might need to travel some considerable distance between worlds that have been confirmed as having stealers amongst them. It stands to reason that once the connection between stealers and the rest of the Tyranids was figured out, the chapter might shift its focus to combatting them as a whole.
