Imperial Fists Captain of the Fifth

Not sure if this particular captain is named in the fluff but I painted this guy up for a friend. Was fun to paint something other than red or green!

Thanks for the comments!

@ Lysimachus, for the power maul I primed it white then used an airbrush to fade in a mix of 2 parts Light Sea Blue, 1 part Yellow and 1 part White (all Vallejo Model Air). I did this from the outside in keeping white in the centre, then edge highlighted with white.

Cheers Anaziel. The yellow... well, that was a bit experimental and passed a certain point I had to just use the paints I had to hand. It went something like this:

- Primed white

- Airbrushed basecoat Vallejo Model Air Yellow

- Wash Reikland Fleshade

- Then I layered Vallejo Model Color 'Flat Yellow' followed by 'Golden Yellow' (both thinned with Lahmian Medium)

- Then another two coats of Reikland Flashade (very thin, 50/50 mix with Lahmian Medium – that stuff is amazing!)

- Edge highlights Vallejo Model Color 'Pale Sand'

I'd recommend Lahmian Medium for pretty much anything! Obviously the airbrushed yellow helped give a smooth coat but it was important to thin the subsequent layers and Lahmian Medium works much better than water. The main trick though is the Reikland Fleshshade - also thinned with Lahmian Medium. Liquid magic for yellow.

Thanks both!

@ Ludovic, this was a one off for a friend. Maybe if I weren't already doing Blood Angels and Orks I'd consider doing more Fists as I do like yellow, especially for the weathering opportunity it presents. As Psy-Crow suggested in my WIP thread, maybe I could do a couple of units of Lamenters to join the Blood Angels :)

Thanks for the comments! I did get some feedback that the 'glowy' part of the power maul ended too abruptly against the haft, so I went back and blended it in a bit. Think it does look better now...

My 2c, I believe it looked better when you didn't have the OSL on the maul shaft, but regardless, I LOVE what you've done with the maul.

I will have to steal this and use it for my kitbashed chaplain.

If you would do a video tutorial of painting that, I would be in your debt.  Failing that, I'd be ok with an account of how you did it, at least.

Thank you both!

@ appiah5 I am going to go back and redo some edge highlighting on the maul, I think that will finish it off nicely :) Not sure when I'll be doing a similar one in order to make a video or pictorial tutorial but I did post the process up on my blog (http://www.themightybrush.com/?p=449). Let me know if you need any more info!
