Joutinhiem 798th Armored Regiment WIP

Taking WarriorFish's advice and starting a WIP thread.   I recently acquired a Astra Militarum army from a friend and since have won a few battles, but now I am ready to make them my own.  So here is the start of the Joutinhiem 798th Armored Regiment.

I don't have much fluff wise other than your typical new planet offering tithes by making it's own guard regiment.  Since I'm making Joutinhiem an Ice world I like the blue scheme, but I may go a darker blue.  Any thoughts, critiques, comments are welcome.

Great to see Zac, I see you've already got your theme worked out with the name and colours ;) You'll have quite a bit of work stripping down those models but I guarantee you it'll be well worth it once you've made them your own army :D What about a camouflage scheme? A mix of darker and medium blues with some white and/or black? Do you have any plans to expand upon the armour?

Thanks.  I've already stripped down a bunch of them. As for a camo pattern, I think I like solid colors better, I like the darker blue cause I keep envisioning tanks striking at moments after sundown.  as forexpanding my armor the only bit I have to get yet is my battery of hydras to keep those pesky flyers off my tail.

What I want my army list to be

HQ:  Tank Commander with Punisher squadron of 3 Punishers
w/Pask upgrade, heavy bolters, heavy stubbers, dozer blades = 510 pts

HQ: Lord Commissar
w/Power sword, carapace armor = 85 pts

Troops: Veteran squad 1
w/Power fist, heavy bolter team, heavy flamer, meltagun, and grenadier rule = 130 pts

Troops: Veteran squad 2
w/2xflamers, grenade launcher, and gredanier rule = 90 pts

Heavy support: Vanquisher squadron of 3xVanquishers
w/melta side sponsons, and lascannon hull guns = 495 pts

Heavy support: Hydra Battery of 3xHydras
w/Base equipment = 210 pts

Heavy support; Eradicator Squadron of 3xEradicators
w/heavy flamers = 260 pts

Fast attack: Valkryie
w/heavy bolter door gunners = 145 pts

total pts = 1925 pts

That's productive, good work! A midnight blue would look very nice I think, though a little dark for your theme? What sort of list are you looking for, something for tournaments or just normal games? Your list has a lot of armour in which is cool but it doesn't look very optimised so it'd help if you let us know what you're looking for so we can give the appropriate advice smile.png

First off Welcome!

Great looking force there too. Ice world will make it stand out from the crowd.

The list idea looks great though I feel only having 2x vet squads in a 2k list won't be enough scoring bodies. Maybe give them some rides to help out with scoring?

Also what does the Commissar do? Is he a personal favourite model?

To find some of the points maybe just having Pask with one buddy as 3 is quite possibly deemed as overkill.

Thank you for the advice.  I am a tread head through and through, so I abhor the use of infantry.  However I understand their need for securing objectives.  After careful consideration, I have revised my list utilizing my other army the Adepta Sororitas.

HQ:  Tank Commander with Punisher squadron of 3 Punishers
w/Pask upgrade, heavy bolters, heavy stubbers, dozer blades = 510 pts

HQ: Lord Commissar
w/Power sword, carapace armor = 85 pts

Troops: Veteran squad 1
w/base equipment = 60pts

Troops: Veteran squad 2
w/base equipment  60 pts

Heavy support: Vanquisher squadron of 3xVanquishers
w/melta side sponsons, and lascannon hull guns = 495 pts

Heavy support: Hydra Battery of 1xHydras
w/Base equipment =70 pts

Fast attack: Valkryie
w/heavy bolter door gunners = 145 pts

Allied detachment: Order of the Blushing Maiden

HQ: Cannoness
w/Rosarius, Mantle of Ophilia, power sword, and inferno pistol = 135 pts

HQ: Sororitas command squad
w/Hospitler, dialogus, banner of orders militant, litanies of faith, condemner boltguns = 155 pts

Troops: 2xSquads of battle sisters (4x battle sisters, 1x Sister superior) = 210 pts

Transport: 2x immolators
w/dozer blade, extra armor. = 150 pts

Total army points = 1990 pts

I love tanks too, but yes troopers are vital to their success. If you're taking them then you may as well make use of them, troops without upgrade are a missed opportunity! Even just flamers on the Vets would make a significant improvement for a low cost as they could clear enemy infantry away from your armour much more efficiently.

I'm not sure what the Lord Commissar is for, probably better to replace him with some psykers for some buffs - especially if you want to run an entire squadron of Vanquishers! Maybe also a Techpriest to keep them trucking and provide PotMS? I prefer squadrons of 2 tanks, as they're more mobile and let you spread the tanks out a bit more, at 2000pts the Valkyrie will be nice but I'd drop the heavy bolters as they are sadly overpriced for their limited use - much better to get the pods for some capable anti-personnel fire in my opinion. That or replace it with a Vendetta for flyer hunting?

The Sisters will provide a solid core to help protect your armour and seize objectives but again wasted without upgrades! I'd drop the CS as you'd get more from standard units to bulk your numbers up and stick the Canoness in with a squad and give them upgrades, they could do some good for you either attacking or defending. The Vanquisher sponsons are also an option to save points, as you'd want them to be far from the enemy if possible.

The list has a good core and theme to it, but I think it could improve quite a bit (hence the long post!).

been painting up a storm with my buddy here is my Vanquisher Squadron, I may remove the sponsons later.  The clear globs are supposed to be Icicles.

Happy to help :) I see you got creative with tank commanders, or is all that your friend's work? Did he also provide you with the sprues, as I spotted a missing track link that needs replacing on the last tank's right set. The sponsons would benefit from being drilled out too if you have the tools. Will you be putting some transfers on such as tank numbers? I think that goes a long way for vehicles especially if you have a lot of them :)

I've had an idea for doing icicles - or at least ice. What about some water effect coated with a gloss varnish? That should look like ice, though it might require a bit of work to shape it. Maybe a bit of modelling snow could be used on top too? I wonder what it would look like if you mixed a bit in with the water effect. Could be worth an experiment but I would test it out first just in case it looks rubbish

Well impressive force you bought there!

I see nothing wrong with blue (as I myself paint mine blueish).

But I am no fan of pink to be honest, unless its slanesh/tzentch and even then I am struggling with it.

I'll be dropping in now and then to see the progress :)

@Vash: Yeah I was experimenting with my limited color selection and I think Orange is a better color.

@WarriorFish:  Thanks.  Unfortunatly that is how I recieved the tank so I am hunting down sprues with tracks LOL.  My friend did provide the Storm Shield sprues but the rest is from a Scions and Taurox kit I purchased last month.  I got the idea for Icicles from this video.  It's quick and more importantly "CHEAP"    http://youtu.be/JJyxP1mVhoo

There's lot of bits and bobs stuck on the models, I'm not sure what they're supposed to represent - hunter killer missiles? Do you have any snow effect? If you're going for them being in the cold environments it might be cool to have some snow on the tank.

The Commissar is a gift from my close friend who got me into 40k so I try to use him as much as possible.  The valkyrie I had a friend paint for me, I asked him to paint it like it flew threw a flock of Gargoyles.  That Valkyrie has some stories with it to I will divulge later.  The Sisters are my allied detachment in progress.

Impressive force you have there. I like the blue armour its really eye catching, could do with some shading and weathering though to really make them pop. With @Vash I'm afraid on the pink, I would go for a different spot colour something to contrast the blue. A grey would work or white.

Definitely less snow on the vehicles. Think how moving parts would knock of snow and warm areas would melt it...  By all means go mad on bases but I would take it easy on the vehicles themselves.

Thank you for the feedback.  I was going off of my experience working on tanks in Germany during the winter and while some parts would knock off the snow and melt them away, other parts wouldn't.  Plus I guess the one downside is I need it that thick to sculpt it properly.  Based on my experience I think it closely matches the Motor pool snow I used to work in.  Will upload pics of bases I've done later.  Thanks again for the feedback everyone.
