Started up an alpha legion army recently, i usually play 1500pt games so ive made a little list here, any feedback and advice would be appreciated

Praetor - 155pts - Thunder hammer, power dagger, iron halo

5 x  Cataphractii - 195pts - 4x power fists

10 x Tactical squad - 210pts - Artificer armour, lightning claw, rhino

10 x Tactical squad - 195pts - power sword, rhino

5 x Recon squad - 175pts - Snipers, cameoline, recon armour (4+sv)

5 x Heavy support squad - 240 - lascannons, aurgury scanner

Legion Sicaran - 175pts - lascannon sponsons

Medusa - 155pts

1500pts

Im planning on adding more vehicles to the list for larger games, maybe add more medusas and some predators to the list

Why take a Praetor? Isn't he a bit expensive in such a small game? You could probably take something like a Chaplain or something like a Siege breaker and still be good.

Also, why a Lightning Claw on one Tac squad? And who is the Praetor Riding with, because if it's the Termis you might be better using a Chaplain in Termi armor.

You do not want any part of footslogging Cataphractii.  They will take 4 movement phases to cross 24 inches of no mans land.  One 12 inch Fury of the Legion from a 20 man tactical squad will reduce a 5 man squad to 1 man on average.  If they got in a round of shooting at 13-24 inches before that, the squad is gone and took up the attention of one backfield tactical squad for only two turns.

Heavy Support Squads are pretty awful for carrying lascannons.  For fewer points you get two predators with their heavy 4 Predator autocannons and two lascannon sponsons each, giving you 4 lascannon shots and 8 autocannon shots on platforms that are immune to small arms fire and can move and shoot.

A Praetor at 1.5k is a bit useless.  He's a one trick pony (melee beatstick) and, without a reliable way to get into melee, a burden on your list.  You want a cheap Centurion, ideally one that provides support for some element in your list (Chaplain for Zealot in a melee squad, for example).

This is actually really helpful thanks xD

I will probably change the praetor for s centurion then, a chaplain sounds like the best one for that too.

I just thought the lightning claw looked kinda cool, this isn't a competitive list at all by the way, just friendly games and im not always up against other marine armies

I will probably consider swapping out the heavy weapons guys for the two predators then

(ive only got atm the 2 tactical squads, the centurion and the recon squad, the termis and sicaran are on the way, ive only been proxying in models for the games so far so im still pretty flexible with my list) but great advice guys!

Always looking to help out a fellow newbie. I myself am just starting out with a World Eaters list myself, and it's not going to be all the competitive (Two 11 man tac squads, Red Butchers in a Spartan, and a Fire Raptor. Pretty small force) but you should always keep in mind what could be useful.

For example, if you have points left over, consider either adding to the Tacitcal squads (10 points a squaddie) or add Apothcaries (even naked they give the entire unit FNP, which is useful in anything that's 10 men or more)

As for the Terminators, maybe consider getting a Land Raider or Spartan for them to ride in? I don't think they can infiltraite or outflank, so you might be best of having them ride around in something to both get them there faster and stop basic bullets ruining them. To compare, I have a unit of 5 Red Butchers in my planned list, who are essentially super assualt terminators. They ride in a Spartan and all have FNP 6+ standard. As a result, they can cross the field faster (if they do, as the spartan is good for Anti-Tank) and they will suffer little to no casualties (as the Spartan is a super Land Raider and they have 2 wounds each)  or soak up much more fire than needed (because the Spartan is a super Bullet Magnet)

Yeah that force is small but sounds like it'll pack a good punch xD yeah I could do that then with the tac squads, would it be a good idea to have a 10 man unit in a rhino and then a larger squad out on the field (they could then have the chaplain and/or apothecary)

Yeah I may have to get a landraider for them in the end, id probably get the phobos pattern instead of the Spartan, id only use the Spartan if I was to add in the chaplain to that squad, and I don't have any plans for more termis in the near future

Correct if I'm mistaken (I don't have my book with me) but I thought all units can infiltrate, so there is little point in downgrading the recon teams armour to scout.

I would look at getting a heavy weapon on the cataphractii, you're really missing out on potential damage output without it. Also 5pts would get you're Sargeant a power knife that would net an extra attack with the power fist.

I always like taking Artificer and a Power Axe on my tacticals just incase they come up against a character and I want him to take the challenge and have a chance of killing it.

I prefer the Vigilator than a Praetor but this has already been mentioned.

I always find that Autocannons or Missile Launchers are the best options for heavy squads.

I would use the infiltrate option, but if my other units are in rhinos I might as well give them a choice out of (counter attack, Adamantium will or tank hunter, all of which have been very effective)

I actually love the idea of the sergeant with the power knife, I didn't think about that (that's definitely being added in now xD)

yeah it was said about the lightning claw being swapped out, I may have to remodel the sergeants with either fists or axes for the ap2 then...

yeah im gonna change the preator for sure now xD

I used to take missile launchers, but in a few games im up against leman russ squads and lascannons are needed xD

Coils of the hydra only includes
+1 to see who goes first with reroll seize the inititative
-1 to enemy reserves

and taking a special unit from another legion

I can still choose which USR out of: scout, infiltrate, move through cover, counter attack, Adamantium will
you don't have to have a praetor for that

Not what he meant. I think he meant that you can only take ONE USR for the entire army, you can't swap them around when in a Rhino or other transport

Oh I think ive worder what I meant wrong, I know you cant swap out stuff and that and you can only take one,

what I meant is that there is no point using infiltrate on my army cause I wanna keep most of my units like the medusa and predators near my edge, the only units I would ever want to infiltrate would be my tactical squads, but seeing as they are in transports and they can speed forward anyways in a turn or two, I may as well give the whole army something else such as tank hunter or counter attack

hopefully this makes more sense now xD

(id rather have an army with something like counter attack, rather than use the infiltrate special rule which wouldn't really be needed)
