Progress! Had an assembly line going today and got all of the base silver and the chest eagles done with a handy shade of Agrax on the brighter areas:

I also found these and managed to remove the dudes inside so I can get a good touch up going:

Next up is some Nuln Oil on the silver areas, a few touch ups and then highlights on the reds. After that I can start to get some arms on the poor brothers.

Looking through my bits box I decided I needed a killer Jetbike for the character I am going to put into my bike squad. After fully raiding my Bitz box and a lot of blu tac this is the result:

Actually really like it myself, very ancient tech looking. Points to anyone who can identify the bits! I'll probably magnetize the gun or something too.

  • 1 month later...

FINALLY found the time to paint, and I also got a day-light lamp to make painting super easy too!

Been busy on the assault squad still, defiantly at a disproportionate rate at to which I am buying new models (Stormraven, Space Hulk Terms, Multiple Chaplains, Librarians, 3 Dreads, a squad of DC...) but I am pleased with how they're coming and am really getting a feel for the scheme and painting techniques on these models.

Quick group shot, the reds have had a wash of Earthshade and then a couple layers of Evil Suns Scarlet to brighten them up:

Closeup of one of the brothers, i've been really careful on the feet and such leaving the inked recesses intact and I love the result:

Weapons! Can't have a Meltacide squad without melta! In total 8 deadly heat guns and a few Chainswords. Painted them yellow on a whim and loved it. Really tried to layer these up to get a worn look and like the result. After the initial layer highlight of Yriel Yellow they were very bright so another Earthshade really brought them together:

Another closeup of a bits box reject in the squad, the initial test dummy for colours but he's turning out okay for sure:

Obligatory Project Table Shot:

CnC welcome as always brothers. A couple questions to leave you with though, whats the best GW colour to highlight the red further? How can I get my black looking better, it's a little washed out at the moment, shall I just put another layer of it on?

P.S. Why didn't I choose a one colour scheme.... Or a simpler one, oh well, hopefully this will all pay off.

Hmm Yeah I've been debating the red crotch. Will have to go over them perhaps. It's a shame because the butt armour looks really nice in red because of the defined edges xD

Maybe I'll paint over one squad and see how it looks. What about the red elbows?

Little update for tonight.

Went with the Black Crotches and I think it does wonders really, I think it was drawing the eye too much before!

While this is very much on the backfoot, what do people think of an all Chaplain Sanguinary Guard Count as? I think when combined with a couple more of their own and some bits from the Sanguinary guard kit (specifically the sexy single thruster packs!) I could have a sweet squad. Only trouble would be showing who had Axes/ Sword Encarmines...

Finally, people always go on about the bling on the BA Tactical squad and I didn't realise until I started to paint the backpacks on the sprue... Such bling. Much wing. Many Drops. Wow:

I also put a little blue on a Librarian but nothing worth showing, truth be told the bottom of his staff came off and I'm considering turning him into another member of the Chaplain crew instead...

Question time:

Black or red shoulder trims? Originally I was going to go for black but full red would be a little easier to paint... What do my brothers think?

Edit: Two more possible options:

http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah177/nevscorner/black%202_zps2oseqc0b.jpghttp://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah177/nevscorner/red%202_zpsaxv3gsgh.jpg

Full black may be a little too close to Death Company Territory though...

This is my advice:

Red pad, black trim and black elbow.

The red fist looks cool, and gave me some ideas you could use if you don't have any fluff. How about their chapter master falcon punched a warboss or something, so they called themselves the bloodied fists, scarlet fists, e.t.c. That way you could use imperial/crimson fist transfers.

Haha I have fluff but I may use that! At the moment name is undecided but they are currently the Glided Horns. Think bull motifs in golden yellow, horns on stuff too.

Bloodied fists is in the maybe pile though ;)

Sadly no gold/ yellow trims for me, wanttio limit that colour to where it is.

I like the red elbow though as it matches tHe way the knees are, and is otherwise no hassle to paint. Although if I go full red pads I may make them black instead...

  • 4 weeks later...

I like a pad with trim.  It helps make the pads and their heraldry a bit more...distinct, for lack of a better word.  Think of it as framing a picture.

I'd go with option 1.

I like 2 and 3.

Two looks striking with the bright red so there is strength in that design. Three just looks tough, with the all black, being more understated then the all red but still a strong design.

The ones with the borders are bordering on being to busy on the eye.

All red pads with a yellow bull head would look dope. Red and yellow look really cool together.

Good job. Keep it up.

I'll probably just paint the pads up full red and then decide if I want the trim after!

In reality though I need to decide something very important: basing!

What shall I go for? A grey rubble/ city base would be simple and not overpower the scheme but also might give me a bit too much black on my models, whereas a desert might complement the yellow and red but be a bit bright and also detract from them.

Quick PS recolour of a GW screen grab in my scheme and basic base colors. I guess desert wins out at the moment!

Bonus:

The eyes are planned to be yellow, like most of the decals and blood drops, but they actually don't look half bad green....... Thoughts?

You would be better off painting the blood drops to be blood, so red or purple. The only time BA change the color is for company designation on shoulder pads.

Look at the model objectively. What are a bunch of yellow drops? Not human blood. GW have been painting the blood drops a slightly purple red. This is good design. You have a strong chapter scheme going, so keep the details traditional as blood. The golden chapter symbol will be enough yellow as it is and then if you want to paint second company you can use the yellow drop on the right shoulder pad as well.

Its all about human blood. Purge the alien.

Good work so far.

The PS render looks rad. Something to aim for with your own models. I like the brown and grey bases. Yellow and green lenses are cool too. Nice planning.

You bring a good point about human blood and the like.... I have already done the blood drops on some helmets I've painted yellow though, but I suppose the aren't really the gem like ones from the shot above.... Will post a pic if I can find one
