Order of the Forgotten Vow, one man's descent into madness.

Hello there,

After a 'brief' ten year break from glueing my fingers together I recently found myself back on the B&C, looking at everyone's marvellous work and getting all misty eyed for days gone by.  My favourites had always been the Sisters since their inception back in the 90's and after a slight hiatus in my late teens had been the army I'd returned to in my mid 20s, as well as some steam marines that I put on here many moons ago.

Suffice it to say imagine the joy that welled deep from within when I went looking for the what I thought would be inevitable plastics that surely must have existed by now.......*cough*

Luckily there was plenty of inspiring stuff on here so I bit the bullet, resupplied the modelling stash and set to building.  Probably a bit  ambitious given I haven't modelled or painted anything in a decade but I always find it's best to dive in both feet first.

After a good many sculpting monstrosities I finally managed to get the first Sister completed

Two more quickly followed

Here they are kitted out with some Umbra pattern Bolters, the scallywags.

The lighting is a bit rubbish as I left it far too late to take photos. I decided to retain a few key elements of the old metal Sisters, basically the bits that make them vaguely recognisable and that I can sculpt.  I'm finishing building a squad of ten before I crack on with painting, though I may be stalling on that somewhat as it's been a while. It's also going to be a slow burner as I'm fitting them around the joys of being  self employed and up to my ears in work, actually this is probably the worst time ever to be getting back into the hobby but I need something relaxing to do when I get the chance so it's all good. I'm rambling, I don't get out much.

Cheers for the kind words!

I've got some more parts on order for another Sister and a superior, though it's a crying shame there's no bits service from GW anymore. I think the biggest shock has been seeing how the company has changed over the years!

Threads like this genuinely make me a little nuts.

'LOOK G-DUBS, LOOK!!! See how easy it would be for you to make awesome plastic Sisters?!?'

 Ahem, anyway, really nice work! The thinner (or lower?) Umbra bolters are a good choice, and are those the Statuesque heads - regular Cracking Hairdo or the Heroic Scale ones?

Cheers everyone, I'll try not to let the sisters down!

@LySiMachus - I'll be honest I've taken a lot of inspiration from other peoples sisters on the site, especially the bolters and heads which are indeed the cracking hairdo ones. It's a tough job burning heretics but there's no need not to look your best while doing so!

I know the main fuss about the plastics is the robes but from what I can tell the Dark Eldar ones have a separate arse piece, and comparing the modern plastics to some old guardians I found in a tin earlier they've come on leaps and bounds. Ah well, ours is not to reason why, or something like that.

I thought I'd put up some of the WIP pics I took whilst trying to figure out what I was doing. They began like most do with some liberal blu-tacking;  I was going to use the Tempestus arms as they were but they were far too chunky, so in the end I hollowed out the shoulder pauldron and made a mould of it so I wouldn't have to go through that particular hell again.

At this point she was called Sister Popeye

Then on to the first tabard attempt and some plasticard chunkiness

After more attempts I got to this stage, where she'd clearly been on a diet of cake and mars bars for the Emprah. Also those ridges on the armour looked too much like braces for my liking so back to drawing board.

This is when frustration kicked in and I decided to model each sister individually instead of attempting multi part interchangeable pieces, that and my casting abilities are dire unless it's something simple. Seems to be working though and at least they're actually getting done now!

Just a quick update.

I've been working on the Sister Superior on and off this week, I would have had her done if I hadn't lost her right arm somewhere and had to order a new one!  I tried sculpting my first fleur de lys... my mind, it hurt but it came out ok in the end I think. She needs some neatening up in places, a few purity seals and a couple of mould lines removing but she's almost ready to purge with impunity!

The order has a name now, the somewhat ironically named 'Sororum Misericordia', they give none and expect none in return!

Her right arm turned up this morning so I finished the superior up. I should probably start thinking about some paint soon...

@Deathalus - I'd go with the DE arms, when they have the robes modelled on they look far better. I was going to use the Scion ones as I baulked a bit at doing sleeve but they look  too chunky when they're on. Hope it goes well!

  • 2 months later...

It's been a while but finally some sort of update! I've had a couple of strenuous jobs on recently which hasn't left much time for cutting my fingers open with a scalpel but I've at last finished the rest of the squad.

I spent ages trying out different helmets and had settled on shaved down Militarum Tempestus heads until I saw some Salleted heads from Vexillia Ltd, bit of shaving metal off the back and they were perfect.

They still need a bit of a clean up but it's time for some paint, I haven't picked up a brush in over a decade so it should be interesting.
