The Thracian Crusade : Gather the brethren !

Yeah, they do look cool. Thanks for posting this Ciler, I never came across these guys. Cool as they look, this is pure 40K logic - send towering guys in plate armour as recon, no clanking or whirring is audible whatsoever.

From a fluff perspective, and as I remember it described in the HH books, those guys use a customised version of the mark IV designed for stealth. One particularly notable feature on the mini is the caps on the backpack vents.

Brother Marshal,

As per your order we have completed a recruitment round in subsector alpha of the Ionia primaris system and have identified a number of suitable candidates for induction into the Chapter. Of those, ten have survived the Rites of Initiation.

We will shortly translate into the Warp to rejoin the fleet with the new recruits.

In the name of Dorn and Sigismund.

Chaplain Lucent

Neophyte Inov has demonstrated some aptitude with heavy weaponry and will train under brother Brüner

Neophyte Morel has been noticed by brother Kernd who will tutor him into the use of the holy bolter. Brother Kernd is considered by the Marshal for elevation into the Sword Brethren if he fulfils this task adequately.

Several neophytes will rejoin the ranks of the fighting companies

Finally, a surprisingly high number of recruits have demonstrated impressive skills for marksmanship and will join our long range fire support and reconnaissance squads

I'm fairly happy with how all of these turned out. There's a bit of work left on the models to add grenades and maybe a few templary bits, and then I will tackle the bases. I'm also unsure of how to paint the cloaks on the snipers. I don't see templars using camouflage so I was thinking of going for a grey/cream and weather it at groud level.

Oh, and the FW resin models are a bitch to assemble, if you get some make sure you clean them in soapy water extensively.

Remember how my Marshal was supposed to go into battle with a wolf, well, it's now done :

They now share a 38mm "scenic" base of which the Marshal can be removed if needs be.

So, while the pain finishes to dry on my initiates with heavy weapons, I wanted to take a minute to let you know the Devastator box contains loads of valuable bits for conversions and such. In particular it has pretty mucch every single CC weap option available to an indep character (p. sword and axe, th. hammer,, chainsword, lighting claw) and quite a few ranged options (bolt and plasma pist, boltgun, combi). So I used most of these and some spares I had around to make myself a new castellan because my current one has a fixed power sword arm.

Here's the WIP. Note that the arms are magnetised at the wrist to allow for easy weapon swap. I didn't feel like magnetising at the shoulder to allow for the power fist because I hardly ever use that setup and it makes the over the shoulder cape complicated. The current cape is a paper template, the green stuff is currently curing.

What do ye think of the greenstuff work on the top part of the tabard and the head of the hammer ?

And here are the aforementioned initiates with heavy weapons, as well as a SB with augur for when it's skyhammer time !

This puts my count of heavy weapons as two of each (H. bolter, M. launcher, Plasma, Las, Melta, Grav) and I wonder what to do with the last set of dev legs/body I have ? I'm thinking las or missile launcher.

Final result on my new castellan :

I had options so I made a new powerpack wit the BT skull relic to represent the iron halo. It's something you'd expect to see more on a chaplain I guess but I figured it looks nice enough and makes the model look a little less blocky.

I have completed my FW recon squad models :

The full recon squad, with initates and neophytes. I am still working on a squad leader, and contemplating using my metal Telion (duly scraped of his smurf honours obviously).

What do you think ?

I know long range warfare is not exactly our thing, but I have initiates and neophytes mixed together right, that has to count for something.

Part of the templar in me wants to scoff, but the parts that appreciate "tacticool" marines are all for it.

In the old BT dex, Swordbrethren squads could actually infiltrate, and was in fact our only unit that could afaik. Swordbrethren could be all geared out for shooty roles too, but of course didn't have sniper rifle access. Are you houseruling these or are they just a for fun modeling project?

I would field them as a regular scout squad with 4+ armour save, in fact. The crowd in my GW is relatively open-minded about "count as" models so they have no problem with that sort of thing. In the same manner, they are OK with my fielding scout models with heavy weapons in my devastator squads.

In that regard, the upgrade on the scouts to have WS4 BS4 has been a real boon, since it make sour dice rolling a lot easier in mixed squads, except for armour saves.

As for myself, I "reconcile" this with the lore on the basis that, how would neophytes practice the use of heavy or special weapons, if not with their initiate ?

Well, some fluff purists, would heatedly debate the fact wether we would have infiltrating scout squads at all to begin with (though in that regard, you are in fact, addressing that very issue by having the 'scout' squad being a mixed initiate and neophyte squad, at least modelwise)

And as mentioned before, one of our old signature units, the swordbrethren, did have the option to infiltrate, so its not like the idea of stealth tactics was ever completely lost on us.

It makes sense enough to me.

"Master, may I ask a question ?"

"What do you want to know neophyte ?"

"It's about brother Rebenacq... Is he not of the Sword Brethren ?"

"He is, neophyte, do you not see the red cross of the Brethren on his armour."

"But master, that is it. Why does he never wear power armour, why does he never fight with the other Brethren ?"

"Because he must atone, neophyte."

"I do not understand, master."

"Few do."

"Some 50 years ago, Brother Rebenacq was elevated to the Marshal's household. In the following year, along with other Brethren who favoured the holy bolter over the sword, they build a fire support squad such that our crusade had rarely seen. Together, they have covered our advance or protected our retreat with such efficiency some jested they would belong better with our Imperial Fist brothers. Yet, not one would deny their worth."

"Yet, during the purging of Nova 13, they got outflanked by Eldar xenos. The witches used some sorcery, and unleashed bolts of lightning on our brothers. All died but brother Rebenacq, who managed to slay the witch and send a warning to the crusade."

"Although he lived, his injuries were quite extensive, and his black carapace was so damaged that he would need lengthy surgeries and new grafts before he could use power armour again. So he refused it, and swore to the Marshal that he would never allow our units to get outflanked again, and that for as long as he shall live he would go to battle in scout armour, leading the reconnaissance squad to fulfil that oath."

"I understand Master."

"Good, no more questions for today then neophyte, now hold my rifle and observe how I take out that Tau stealth armour with my combat blade only."

http://reho.st/self/341c4541f685422b5181568a03974bfa759b1183.jpg

And the full squad :

http://reho.st/self/f217ef5e7e6f2e00ff2afdea43abae7311a73399.jpg

SO yes, I had this old metal model of Telion lying around from when it was released some 10 years ago, and I quite like it. I figured, as I was going to get paddled for that recon squad anyway I might as well go all out. Filing the ultra emblems on the shoulder pad, arms and bolter was a  ludicrous pain in the neck, but I'm happy enough with the result. The left shoulder pad is now a gold shield with our cross on it.

What do ye think ?

The mixed squad was fine ... made sense that neophytes who would end up in devastator squads and such would get training in such weapons.  Also made sense that even the most in your face bring the Emperor's light by the edge of my blade army like the Templars would still scout their enemies (and as Reinhard has pointed out we used to have an infiltrating unit).

The Telion model though ... looks weird to me that he's in neophyte armor leading the squad ... like why didn't he ever graduate to Initiate?  I see that you differentiated him with the sword brother color shoulder pads ... I guess he just needs a little back story ...

Something like how he was training in the recon/scout unit under some initiate but then he was so good at it, showed such natural ability and instincts as a scout.  So even when he become an initiate, and later a full on Sword Brother, he has preferred to wear the lighter neophyte uniform because he felt that power armor was inhibiting him from doing his job, to protect his fellow brothers.

Is there because I like it. The "fluff" is just a mean to justify the end. Don't read more than that into it.

As long as you don't put white pauldrons and with our holy cross on them, I'm good.

In some regards, they are better than witches, because they burn even brighter and the ceramite in their armor adds interesting sparkles to the flames.

Indeed.

Army on parade is coming, so while the display board is drying up, I figured I'd work on the decorations a bit.
