Who makes sure the -I- stay inline

As Jono said, the Inquisition is mostly self policing. Certainly there's enough bickering between different ethos/ideas/people so they're never short of excuses to be in each other's business :P Remember that it mostly applies to the Inquisitor himself, his standing and reputation as well as how many friends he has (and who they are). So a new Inquisitor without experience or many friends is going to get nowhere if he goes after another with much renown. Of course, nothing stopping him trying the unofficial means... but he should be prepared for the consequences of failure!

It's a pretty big part of how the Inquisition works (or rather, Inquisitors) in my opinion so is a lot of fun to work with. For example my Inquisitor is (in?)famous and powerful but with that comes many enemies for a variety of reasons, so as much as he tries to fight the enemies of the Emperor he has to contend with enemies from within...

The Ecclesiarchy also maintains a cadre of 'Witch-Finders' who have been known to take exception to certain Inquisitors and hunt them down as heretics on their own authority, such as the shadow war between Witch-Finder Tantalid and Inquisitor Eisenhorn.

Inquisitors usually have their own internal hierarchy. Usually a Sector will have its own Inquisition Conclave to make determinations on who gets a rosette, who gets immolated in boiling brass, etc. But it's never clear cut as each individual and faction has their own agendas.

As others have said, they're basically self-policed and the sheer number of factions means that no one inquisitor or group can get enough of an upper hand to start making a serious problem for the Imperium. I suppose the High Lords of Terra might have some sort of final final say, but I very much doubt they would get involved -- they probably prefer to let the =][= continue to fight among/police themselves.

Interesting snippet from Ian Watson's Draco, p83:

"True, his own Ordo also served as a secret watchdog over the Inquisition at large."

Draco was in the Ordo Malleus.

I realise it's an old book but interesting insight into the machinations of the Inquisition

I'm loving the idea that multiple Inquisitors are sometimes sent to the same destination or mission to watch over one another. Sometimes covertly, sometimes not.

That's what I call trust :p

I believe that was in older publications which has since been retconned. this link on Lexicanum also stated that it used to be the responsibility of the OM. It sound to be a job for the OH now.

Yes he is.

Quozzo: I've no doubt it has been retconned. That anthology was written pretty much at the dawn of 40K :).

It's interesting in that the OM was then considered to be the elite (for want of a better word) faction within the Inquisitorial hierarchy - subordinate to still higher levels of secret circles - but nevertheless considered the watchmen as well as fulfilling their anti-daemon role.

At the time it would seem that daemon incursion, either through the weak fabric of the warp itself or ingress via possession of misguided untrained psychic minds, was seen as the main threat to the Imperium of man. That and the growing number of Genestealer Cults.

Thus the OM's preeminent standing.
