Which successor?

Hello fellow brothers.

I have recently brought the new blood angels tac squad and I am keen to try and paint them. However my dilemma is I already have the FW blood angel transfer sheet from a previous project and am trying to decide which successor to go with.

The choices I have are,

Angels Encarmine

Angels Sanguine

Blood Drinkers

Flesh tearers

I would like to know which chapter are your favourites and why. Help me to decide brothers, there are heretics to kill.

I am so far leaning to the Blood drinkers, due to them being practically an exact codex chapter, with a minimal death company. I like range more then close combat personally and that they have been around since rouge trader.

Also are the blood drinkers shoulder trims yellow for all? or is it just company colour?

Other contenders for me would be the Angels sanguine and the flesh tearers.

Your thoughts brothers?

Much appreciated.

The yellow would be company colour, as they follow codex markings instead of BA ones.

That said, you can paint them all yellow if you like, it's your army :) Or just go with the BD second company.

Blood drinkers are cool, being a little different. I've always had a soft spot for halved schemes, so I like the look of The Angels Sanguine, but I will probably be painting up some flesh tearers at some point!

If you want, you can paint a squad from each!

I chose Flesh Tearers only for their color scheme. I don't really like how they are portrayed in the books but I can live with it because I think they are the best looking marines there are. Go with a chapter that you will think is fun painting and use the units that you like as all the chapters are codex and would use whatever tool that fits for the job.

Blood drinkers are all red except for shoulder pad trim which is the company of there company. I would choose either red, black or yellow trim for them personally. They are basically the same colour as blood angels except for the chapter symbol.

Angels encarmine have a black back pack and shoulder trim and all red.

Angels Sanguine I like with the halved black and red scheme but I don't know how easy that will be to do and I might lose motivation if I find it to complicated and time consuming. I do like how they refuse to remove their helmets  and show their faces. Very mysterious.

I always like the Flesh tearers in the books and fluff, especially red fury if anyone has read that. I always imagine them with close combat based troops however. I like my bolter marines.

Of these, my favorite would be the Angels Encarmine. As stated previously, their DC and SG are painted white, instead of the traditional black and gold respectively.

Coming up with a reason for that perticularity could easily give some extra caracter to your force : maybe the first AE chapter master figured the legacy of Sanguinius and the Sanguinary priesthood was the most important part of the chapter and the SG were thus assigned to protect the priests, rather than chapter command. Maybe they've been on crusade, looking for a cure for the black rage or red thirst.

And if I ever were to do AEs I'd go the extra mile (or rather, try to) : the angels have always been described as a match for classical sculptures... Why not paint the SG/DC in white marble, rather than white?

I have started a project of Angels Encarmine few years back, the white DC is very impressive, but it can be very frustrating painting white, It always be very difficult for me.

Also the little background that exists, allows you to create what you want for your army.

Moreover the Flesh Tearers have a very good fluff and the paint scheme is much simpler. With the new codex is likely to Begin an army of them.

Knights of Blood! We're the original loyal renegades, hell-bent on conquering enemies of the Imperium, including the suffering-fattened leeches who stand astride it!

....... Not the "original" per se. A certain spider beat you to the punch..... :P

Out of your choices, persinally my vote would be the Flesh Tearers because blood, guts and carnage. My logic says that since you're already leaning Blood Drinkers, perhaps you should go that way.

I don't see many Blood Drinker armies. If you want something unique, go for them or the Angels Encarmine. I am a big fan of white DC and SG.  I feel as if everyone is jumping on the Flesh Tearer's wagon lately.

And in terms of the shoulder pad trim, every reference I have seen of the BD has depicted them with a yellow one.

Hope this helps!

The Blood Drinkers use the codex markings in the same way as the Ultramarines. The yellow trim is for the second company. Here are some things I learned while working onthem:

With the Baal Predator kit is a Grail Icon that works really well for all of your vehicles. Looks great on a rhino door. You can get them on ebay, just be patience.

A seller on Shapeways does 3d printed shoulder pads, they are just okay. Forgeworld has a decent BA decal sheet with BD decals.

The color scheme works really well until you put the decals on. I found the white arrow on the shoulder pad drew the eye away from the model. The black grail on the other side doesn't balance it out.

Read the "the Rite of Holos" and  "Death of Integrity" from Black Library, both are really good and cover the Blood Drinkers in detail.

If you prefer ranged combat a bit more than CC and like to use Codex markings you could always choose the new boys on the block, the Carmine Blades. Given they've only recently learned of their true heritage as Sanguinius successors it's not exactly a stretch to think they might still use the Codex markings and more balanced style of warfare from foster-daddy Rouboute's Big Book of How Not To Think For Yourself Flawless Tactics and Strategems From 10 Millenia Ago.TM

As for my personal favourites out of the Successors, I'd have to give my votes to the Lamenters or Flesh Tearers, if only because they've recieved more characterisation than any of the others and thus theres more to know and like about them.

I know it wasn't one of the choices listed, but very few of us play Angels Vermillion...

To be honest I'd completely forgotten about the Angels Vermillion (although to be fair I'd forgotten the Angels Encarmine too, sorry brothers!) before you mentioned them James, but can you really blame me with your Chapter's isolationist nature? You don't visit, you don't write, you don't call, and you guys never show up at the family gatherings on Baal!

Nah, sorry, the AL only became cool when the book 'Legion' was released. Up until then, they were portrayed as the whiny younger brothers to the other Legions :P
