Sisters of the Order of Our Martyred Lady Blog

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow Sister players, collectors and fans!

First of let me introduce myself, I am Brother Andropof and I recently joined the B&C after a long time lurking.

I have been in possion of a bunch of Sister models for quite some time now and totaly love them but couldn't get around to paint them all up and build atleast a small army of them(lets see where the future and the Emperor guides this)

I really liked the colours of the Order of Our Martyred Lady, so I decided I wanted to paint my Sisters in those colours.

With posting my Sisters here I hope to keep motivated and (hopefully) comments and tips to get better at painting my models.

Ok without any delay the things I have been working on.

First off the Saint herself, please note that everything is still WIP.

Saint Celestine 1 WIP

A little bit more of a close up of her body

Saint Celestine 2 WIP

Saint Celestine 3 WIP

Next up is the Canoness, I don't have a name for her yet so any suggestions are more than welcome!

Canoness 1 WIP

Canoness 2 WIP

Canoness 3 WIP

and last but not least a line Sister. I painted her first as a test, still need to paint her backpack and do a proper basing.

Comments are more than welcome ofcource!

This or the PCA/WiP forums are both suitable, although you'll get better technical feedback over on PCA.

Interesting use of purple on the Canoness, do you intend for her to have the Mantle of Ophelia?

Looking really good Brother Andropof.  I really like the OoOML scheme - I started doing my own Sisters in the same colours, but after painting two previous armies all in black armour, I couldn't face another one!  So I went for something different...

What are your plans for basing them?  A nice warm desert themed base would look good?

Really looking forward to seeing some more of these - keep 'em coming!

thank you already for the comments!

@Furyou Miko,OK I will take a look over there, thanks for the tip! Regarding the cloak I wanted to use the Mantle of Ophelia and the reason I painted it purple is because I really like purple and didn't want to paint it red.

@KiwiBen, Thanks, and what armies did you paint?, if you don't mind me asking just curious. A desert theme would be really cool I had not considered that option! I plan on updating real soon again (with pictures ofcource)

thanks again for the comments

I did an Iron Hands Space Marine army, followed soon afterwards by a Grey Knights army.  The GKs aren't painted in the codex silver scheme - instead I went with the mainly black armour scheme from an old Index Astartes article.  There is a pic of my favourite GK unit in my Plog (link in my Sig).  The Plog is a bit neglected, but I hope to get back into painting again soon.  The weather here in NZ has been too humid/hot, which makes it hard to get motivated - and I'm also working full time, and doing post-grad study, so time is a bit hard to find!

I've done a desert theme on my GKs and Sisters.  I think on the GKs especially it helps to brighten up the models.  I did originally have a ruined cityscape theme, but it was too dark, and the models got a bit lost.  The brighter bases help them to stand out a bit more I think.

Yep! Great stuff mate, I'm looking forward to seeing more!

I'll also echo KiwiBen's suggestion on the desert basing. I've done the same thing on my Black Legion force and a bright base really does help a black armoured model stand out. So yeah, either desert or snowy bases should work a treat! B)

Thanks for the many comments and the suggestions!

I have been working on the Battle Sister and she is finished! She is the first member of a squad of 6 Sisters and the rest of the First Squad will follow soon(I hope)

I really liked the idea of doing a desert base, as suggested by KiwiBen and by Sith'ari.

@KiwiBen, cool I really like the old blakeish-grey Grey Knights. I looked at your models and the red Sisters look really awesome!

@Duke Danse Macabre, Thanks! I saw it painted on some Celestion I believe in the old Witch Hunter Codex and I really liked the look of it so I plan on doing that on all my Sisters.

@Sith'ari, Thanks! I hope I have finished more soon!

I hope you guys like it and if you have any tips, critics or comments please post them so I can improve.

Top work - I love it! B)

Thats a really nice cracked earth effect you managed mate. Did you use that crazy GW basing paint (Agrellian earth I think its called, I cant remember off hand!happy.png) Because I may have to pick up a pot if so!

Base looks great Brother Andropof.  It has some nice detail in it with the cracks and the different sized rocks, but it's still simple enough that it doesn't detract from the model itself.  And it also helps to add some colour to the model and brighten the whole thing up a bit.

Really looking forward to seeing a whole unit of these done up!

Edit:

P.S.  Thanks for the kind words about my models too!  I'll have to get my ass into gear and get some more painting done...

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I really appreciate itbiggrin.png.

@Sith'ari: Thank you! Yes it is that funky GW technical paint, Agrellan Earth, if you use it remeber to paint it on quite thick otherwise it will not crack.

@KiwiBen: Thank you, I am still thinking of adding a little bit of grass, the yellow, dry kind of grass but I am still not sure. And I will paint as fast as possible to get a unit done as soon as I can.

Also I wanted to make a little update on the First Squad.

Entire First Squad, though not yet painted they consist of 2 flamers, the Sister Superior has a Combi-Flamer and 3 Bolters. They will ride in an Immolator APC. If you have any suggestions for names I am more than happy to hear them!

First Squad WIP 1

A close-up of the Sister Superior. I will paint her next, just one question, do you guys think a Space Marine back banner will fit on the Sister backpack?(the size and such)

please let me hear your thoughts and opinions! they are more than welcome!

Thanks for watching,

Lots of "flamey" goodness in that squad thumbsup.gif

Also, I'm super-jealous of the VSS / classic Canoness model. That has to be my all-time favourite SoB sculpt, but alas, I do not have one in my collection, and now it is oop.

Re. the back banner - I recall trying something similar on my SoBs once, but the size was a bit off... One thing I did try, which I think looked OK, was making a little "banner" using a small pole and one of the little shields from the Brettonian Knights kit - it had just enough room to paint a little fleur de lys on it. The other thing that I've seen done, which looks quite nice, is using the "iron halo" bit from the Space Marine Terminator kits. It is smaller than the banner, but still provides a nice little way to mark out the character.

My 2 cents.

Cheers,

KiwiBen

@KiwiBen: yeah I really like to use flamers, so ofcource I will use as much of those as I can!

The model was included in the set when I bought it and I really love the model, she has such an heroic pose and such.
I experimented with the different "banners" and I liked the Iron Halo the best, also enforces the "holy" theme around the Sisters in my opinion.

The Sister Superior is almost done I will update with a pic real soon (I am at internship so no Sisters nor a camera lol)

further more I have a question regarding list building. I am fairly new to this part of the hobby so I would like your feedback and tips!

the list I have come up with so far is:

HQ

Cannones - Bolt Pistol and Chainsword, Melta Bombs 70pts

ELITES

Repentia Squad

Rhino APC                125pts

TROOPS

Battle Sister Squad

4 Sisters - 2 flamers

Sister Superior-combi flamer

Immolator APC with Multi Melta                140pts

Battle Sister Squad

4 Sisters - 2 flamers

Sister Superior-combi flamer

Immolator APC with Multi Melta              140pts

HEAVY SUPPORT

Exorcist- 125pts

That total is 600 points, because that is the point count I will play with the most with my group of friends(I will expand for sure because I really like the models!)

Thanks for watching & reading

Critics and Commends are more than welcome

Looks decent mate though in such small numbers, without a priest and without an assault transport.

Personally I feel you would be better switching them for an Penitence Engine and justing the remaining points to upgrade your Canoness with a bit more gear and perhaps switch 1 of those flamers in each sister unit to a melta gun.

That list looks pretty solid for a 600 pt game...  I'd echo the Duke's concerns about the Repentia maybe being a little bit vulnerable at such low numbers though, although you might get away with it at such low points, especially if you pick your targets well.  I do like the idea of the Penitent Engine...  especially at 600 pts, because there is likely to be less on the table that is capable of dealing with it effectively, so it becomes even more of a threat, and at 80 (?) points it is a bargain!  With the spare points you could probably squeeze in a Priest with Litanies, who might add some punch to one of your SoB squads...

A tiny change that I'd suggest would be dropping the Melta Bombs on the Canoness, and using those 5 pts to buy a Storm Bolter for your Exorcist.  Mine never leave home without one - for a mere 5 pts you get a 50% chance of "ignoring" the first Weapon Destroyed result that your Exorcist suffers.  It doesn't matter if you lose your Storm Bolter, and if it earns you an extra turn or two firing the Missile Launcher, then it is definitely worth it!

I think at 600 pt level, you've probably got enough anti-tank - between the Exorcist, 2 Immolators, and Krak Grenades on everything - so you're not really losing anything by dropping the Melta Bombs.  If you decide to go with the Repentia or Penitent Engine then they'll make a mess of most vehicles anyway.

@Duke Danse Macabre:I see what you mean with them being fragile I didn't consider the Pentient Engine. It looks really fun with those 2 Heavy Flamers.

@KiwiBen:I like the idea of a Priest being along with the Sisters and and thanks for the tip of the Storm Bolter never considerd that!

the list looks as following at the moment;

HQ

Canoness - Combi Flamer 75pts

TROOPS

Battle Sister Squad

4 Sisters - 2 flamers

Sister Superior-combi flamer

Immolator APC with Multi Melta                140pts

Its all looking good mate, I would ask though about the Exorcist at 140 points, seems you may of over estimated the cost as with a Storm Bolter it only costs 130 unless you have took extra armour or something else as well and just not listed it.

its only 10 points saved but that could make 2 flamers into 2 Melta Guns and you seem you be a little light on them truth be told.

Also not conviced the priest is the best choice, reason being his war hyms are used off HIS leadership which is 7, also you don't have large enough units to make the best use of this so for those same points you can make 2 flamers Heavy Flamers and givew your HQ a power weapon. :)

Thats just my opinion however.

I can't really comment on the list, as I'm still a complete Sister's novice myself, but I'd definately recommend keeping the skull in the relic gold. Of course I am completely biased as I've always loved golden relics! happy.png

  • 3 weeks later...

@Duke Danse Macabre: yes I forgot to list the Hunter Killer Missile but for now I will put the list building on hold untill my basic force is painted up.

@Sith'ari: Golden relics are always awesome. Next to skulls gold is a sign of the sheer inpractical stuff the Imperium pulls off (and somehow still works).

First off sorry for the long wait, have been busy with internship and school. That means painting goes a bit slower. I just finished the Sister Superior. I really like the little bits of fluff I read on the Bolter and Chainsword( done bij various persons on here) so I thought lets try it myself.

Sister Superior Astrid 1

I named the Sister Superior Astrid Jurgensen, unlike most Sisters her background is pretty well known.

She whas born on the Ice World of Svellheimr to the local leaders of that world. Both of them where generals in the Imperial Guard, and as with every Sister she became a orphin at the hands of foul xenos. Even when she whas still in training at the Schola Progenium she whas over fanatic and sometimes dangerously violent. When she joined the Order of Our Martyred Lady she quickly rose to become Sister Superior. Now she leads her squad in the name of the Emperor to the greatest feats of bravery.

And here some more pictures of the Sister Superior Jurgensen and the yet unnamed Battle Sister

I hope you enjoy and as always please comment I love to hear what you think biggrin.png

thanks for reading

These are looking really cool! I like how the little iron halo turned out too. It's subtle, but it looks like it belongs there. If only I could scrounge together enough of those for my VSS models!
