New Ravenwing Project - Updated 7/21/2016 BLACK KNIGHTS!

Very nice. You certainly are ambitious. I love the fact that you pretty much assembled the entire force before painting it! biggrin.png

We demand more progress updates! msn-wink.gif

Well, you see 2 separate projects there. The primed models are from my original Ravenwing army. The non-primed models are the brand new addition to the army. I always assemble my entire army before painting.

I plan on doing a lot more updating. I gave my 2 week notice at work as I've been averaging 3 - 6 hours of sleep per night between work and classes. I just haven't had time to do much work. As of the 23rd I'll have a lot more time though.

As a small update, however, I am finishing the last 8 bikes and preparing to order 3 more to make a chaplain, librarian, and standard bearer. That should round out my army and add all the different options I would like. Well, it would be funny to run 7 librarians on bikes using the Librarius Conclave, but Ezekial would just feel left out tongue.png.

Group photo op!

Still working on the bikes. The three lone bikes on the right will become a chaplain, standard bearer, and librarian. This is also without my landspeeders or MOTRW's landspeeder. My jet bike I actually made back around 1999, after jet bikes were removed from imperial armies and before the new sammael jet bike. I've upgraded it using the newer DA accessory sprues. I haven't added the plasma cannon yet.

All the bases will be replaced with the clear laser cut acrylic as I finish painting them. The downside to using clear acrylic is that you can't do any painting at all once it's glued on. Well, maybe some slight touch up on the top, but it's really easy to accidentally stain.

  • 2 weeks later...

Started the painting process. This is going to take a while, but here is how things are developing so far:

Now that I actually have some spare time, I'm making some real headway. Looks like it will probably take 2 - 3 days per batch of 6. If I keep up at this pace, I can have them finished before summer :D

I updated the corvus hammers and created a unique mace/maul/force weapon/crozius for HQ units:

Here is the 3d view of the mace and the 3d view of the new corvus hammer.

I'm about to have them printed, so once the manual check is complete I'll have them in 1.5 - 2 weeks.

Another painting update. I'm finishing up the heads on the helmet-less riders. I did two white and two Native American for a bit of diversity (and because I really wish GW would not have thrown that theme to the wayside):

The 3D models look great! It must have taken you a long time to model them. What program did you use? Also, what type of printer is being used? I've printed a shield with PLA filament with mediocre results.

It takes a while. I use sketchup at the moment. I especially like it's component system so I can easily swap parts. I use Shapeways for 3d printing, specifically their Fine Ultra Detail (FUD) material. Filament printers don't have anything near the required resolution for wargaming miniatures.

Got an email from Shapeways saying my order was delayed. Bummer. I am almost done with the first 6 bikers though. I think I'm going to reduce the quantity I do at once to groups of 4. Mostly because that seems to be a perfect breakdown of similar model types. Here are some updated pics:

Liking the new 3D models you have there, very cool, will be neat to see them printed up.

Models are looking good, you have already painted more bikes than I have in 20+ years! It looks like you changed some of the fairings to the older RW style ones? It looks good and probably helps them fit more seamlessly in with squads using those.

Ironically I don't consider 4th edition gun shields to be "older", as I've had 2nd edition bikes :).

But funny story there... those bikes came without the DV gun shields that they were supposed to have. I had 4th edition bits laying around (well, neatly organized) and did some converting. You'll find a large number of my other bikes are also converted in that they have regular bolters cut to fit them.

My bucket list is heavy with a fully painted Ravenwing army. I do want this finished by summer.

3d printed stuff is supposed to ship by March 10. If it does, I should have it by March 16. I'll make sure to update as soon as I get the prints.

Beautiful and inspiring...  I love the rustic look of the robes and shields. They are very opposite of mine but I really like them.

Thanks :). It helps to listen to Celtic music while painting. But overall, I like to keep my Dark Angel's dark.

Not trying to argue with you, but they are the "older" RW fairings. The 2nd Edition bikes for RW I have always had didn't have any wings on their fairings at all (although you could get them with the old Bits program off the Chaplain on Bike model).

Good luck, the army looks like it is coming along, but will look great when it is finished! Ravenwing ho! (Come on, our Primarch is Lion-O) ;)

Lion-El technically :P

I know what you're saying. I'm just saying I've been collecting since 2nd Ed was all the rage. I had a Ravenwing force way back then when it was just generic space marine bikes and a heavy, pewter, Master of the Ravenwing. I still have that model, but I have to put him back together. It's a plastic/pewter mix, but all the good parts are pewter.

twopounder your Ravenwing look shabby, dirty and battlworn -- I love 'em!!

But more than that what impresses me more is the fact you've designed are having produced your own unique weapons. You're the first I know who has done such a thing. Utilising modern tech in that way I find intriguing.

I have all sorts of questions re desiging to 40K's strange overemphasised scaling, costs, and prototyping/testing -- but I'll hold back for now.

Can't wait to see how they turn out.

Cheers

Well, feel free to ask. Or PM me if you wish. Thanks for the compliments. I think everyone wants to make their army their own, I've just been exploring a unique angle to do it. Sadly the new tacticals make it much harder to produce custom bolters (a feature, I'm sure), but it just means I need to get better at organic modelling. I'm very intrigued by the rumors of an entirely new power armor, and what it means for design of the game as a whole. Looking at all Space Marine vehicle designs since 3rd edition, and how they have migrated from round to angled, it wouldn't surprised me if the new power armor was more like Iron Man or Halo. It's also easier to produce hard surface models and space marines lean more towards organic in how round their armor is.

Anyway, still waiting for shipping confirmation from shapeways. It's supposed to be the 10th at the latest and they use USPS now, which is about the same as gluing the package to a snail and pointing it in the right direction.

Just got word that my 3d models have been printed and shipped! Hopefully the second time is the charm. Everything seems fine on them, so we'll see. I worry a bit about the maces, but I doubled the thickness of the wings over what the corvus hammers have, and the wings on the corvus hammers are pretty sturdy. Just needed a better anchor point.

If I'm lucky, I'll have them on Friday. Otherwise, maybe Saturday or Monday.

I don't have time to go into detail right now (impending exam), but here are the preliminary pictures:
