The Confused Conglomerate Kerfuffle

A couple of weeks ago I went to Warhammer World with three friends to play a 40k 1500 point mini tournament. Since we go to the Council of War event as the Confused Conglomerate, I decided this event would be known as the Confused Conglomerate Kerfuffle. It consisted of 3 games, with the points added up at the end to determine the winner. We all took Chaos Marines from different legions, Alpha Legion for me.  Also I took some pictures.

My list consisted of an Undivided Sorcerer in Terminator armour, Khârn the Betrayer (Omekharn), 30 cultists, 5 marines with plasma in a rhino, 2 dreads, 3 combiplasma terminators, heldrake (with hades!), 2 individual spawn, havocs with plasma and meltas in a rhino, 2 individual oblitorators.

Game 1: Crusade, Hammer and Anvil

First game was against Colin and his Word Bearers.

Colin took a Sorcerer, Prince, a dread, 2 five man squads with plasmas, chosen with plasma in the rhino, 2 heldrakes (both hades! - Colin expected to see a fire raptor from one of the other two) and 2 havoc squads with autocannons. I'd played Colin a lot recently and our last two games had been massively one sided maelstrom of war missions, first to me and then to him, so it was my turn again...

My deployment - both oblits, terminators and heldrake are in reserve (this applied to all 3 games).

Word Bearers deployment.

One of Colin's objective markers - the 'thing in a box'

Omekharn, the sorcerer and the cultists advanced along with the dreads, while the rhinos took positions on the flanks. The Word Bearers took up firing positions, with the rhino advancing while the prince swooped.

The drakes came on, mine got a vector stike on the prince and shot the gun off one of Colin's. My havocs took out the chosen rhino, leaving them nicely positioned in front of the dread. I think Khârn failed the charge after this pic.

It swiftly went downhill for Colin from here, so I didn't take too many pics. Khârn got a mutl charge on the sorcerer and the marines, killing them all himself and turning into a Prince (He got better). The havocs took out the Word Bearer Prince, while the deep striking terminators + oblits took out the chaos marines holding the rear objective.

Prince Khârn charged a hovering heldrake and tore it out of the sky, while across the board my objective secured rhino went flat out to grab the objective from under the havoc's noses, giving me all 5 objectives, slay the warlord and linebreaker. Colin grabbed first blood (I think it was my melta dread with the auto havocs) and slay the warlord after the prince took out the sorcerer with a one diced tzeentch primaris power. (Grumble). Result: Win, 17-2

In other news, Jim's stompy Iron Warrior's took on John's noisy Emperor's Children. John picked up the win in that one, so I would play him in the second round.

Game 2: Emperor's Will, Vanguard Strike

Second game was against John's Emperor's Children. The list included a lord on steed riding with a big unit of spawn (the spider marines), 2 6man noise marine squads with blast masters and 4 sonics, 2x noise dreads, heldrake, melta chosen in rhino, sicarian battle tank. I was intimidated by all the ignores cover weapons, and the general shootyness of the list, but I was hoping my deep strikers would cause enough of a distraction for Khârn and the cultists to arrive and chop up the Slaaneshi worshipers.

John's deployment was pretty much as expected, his objective is on the roof of the ruin.

Given all the cover ignoring stuff I deployed my cultists in the open so as to get there faster. I was lucky enough to roll endurance on my sorcerer so he was casting it on the cultists for the first few turns as my force advanced on the Emperor's children gunline.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2c_zps477833c0.jpg

I left my rhinos and marines to guard my objective and the flank from the spawn and lord who snuck round the side.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2d_zps53d4a844.jpg

The Oblits teleported in on turn 2, and managed to deal 1 hull point to the rhino. I was hoping for a little better than that. They look a bit vulnerable there.

The cultists continue to advance, taking 'acceptable' losses from the noise marines...

Until the heldrake shows up and starts bursting eardrums.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/heldrake_zps3acb77d7.jpg

I took another shot of the Slaaneshi drake since it was very cool.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2h_zps7b0b22bd.jpg

This is what was left over after a couple of drake related shooting phases.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2g_zpsb7fe3961.jpg

The oblits died to the melta chosen, who then got blasted by my terminators, who then got charged by the noise dread (should have put a chainfist on them...)

In the centre the sorcerer tried to cast iron arm and warp speed on himself to go and solo one of the noise squads while Khârn and the remaining cultist took on the other. He managed to get perils twice and died.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2i_zps73b42618.jpg

Khârn made it though, assisted by one of the spawn that had snuck in to take the overwatch. He hit and wounded with all his attacks, so took out the squad with a wound to spare. He then hid under the ruin and hoped for the best.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2k_zps3c44828d.jpg

He didn't make it. That's one spawn trying to hold out to give me a point for linebreaker. He didn't make it either.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2j_zps6aa58c01.jpg

In another, irrelevent corner of the board, the dread finally gets that rhino I targeted at the start of the game. I think he charged the 2 marines and got hilariously killed by overwatch. And in the corner with my objective...

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game2l_zps321788ef.jpg

Probably should have paid more attention to those spawn. This left John with both objectives, slay the warlord and linebreaker, and me with just one point (I think from first blood - can't remember who did it). Result: Loss, 1-9

Elsewhere, the Word Bearers got smashed by the Iron Warriors, it looks even at this point but apparently Colin developed a severe case of Fish Dice (his rolls stunk) after turn 1.

Game 3: Purge the Alien, Dawn of War

Finally, I go against Jim's Iron Warriors. I don't play Jim often, but he usually takes lists that are heavy on armour, and this was no exception. He had a prince with the axe (aka Tinny), a Warpsmith (aka evil Tony Stark), 2 10 man cultist squads, 3 Ferrum Infernus dreads with firestorm cannons and heavy flamers, 2 defilers, 1 vindicator. My list has quite a lot of anti armour, but also has a lot of small units so if it went wrong I would give up a lot of kill points. Could have gone either way.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3a_zpse98cebe9.jpg

Jim's forces line up. Tony and the cultists were in reserve.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3b_zps8bef6180.jpg

I didn't get a shot of my set up, but this is after my first turn. I advanced with the cultists and dreads, while the havocs hold back on the right, and the marines go flat out on the left. The melta dread took a hull point off a defiler this round, and lost one to the other defiler (who also lost one to a failed daemonforge test). I rolled endurance again this game but I didn't cast it in turn one since literally everything that could hit my cultists as S6+

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3c_zpsd2af40da.jpg

Turn 2 starts out quite well as the meltadread explodes the defiler opposite him.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3d_zpsc1313265.jpg

The Termicide squad have an unenviable job, turning up behind the prince and dreads. Their combi plasmas put 2 wounds on the prince (and kill the champion from overheat), while a 24 inch plasma shot from the havocs chips off another one.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3e_zps6178d100.jpg

Tinny makes his move. With 1 wound left, he decides to charge the dread for an easy kill (I was secretly hoping he charged the cultists so my champion could have a go at killing him with his shotgun) - but it didn't work out so well as the melta dread got him with overwatch.

I tried to get a better pic of the prince conversion, but it didn't turn out very well. It's a cool conversion with a defiler head, helbrute hand and jump pack made from I think marine flyer bits?

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3f_zpsd50bef7c.jpg

The cultists turned up to support the vindicator, facing off against my 5 man squad. They look badly outgunned, but I had rolled the warlord trait that gave me stealth in ruins, so I went to ground for a 2+, so didn't take too much damage.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3g_zps8c4dca38.jpg

El Drakeo arrives, I think he vector struck something, then took a hull point off the vindicator. The defiler charged my havocs, but Jim was having a bit of a melta problem, as it died to an overwatching meltagun.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3h_zps19e79b60.jpg

The cultists advance to get more shots in at my cowering marines, while my spawn were waiting to pounce on the other side of the ruin. I think Tony killed the rhino this turn.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3i_zpsb87ecf1a.jpg

I start to clear up the board now, as the oblits arrive. One of them get a twin flamer shot right on a cultist squad to incinerate them, and the spawn charge in to try and finish up the remnants.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3j_zps195e66ed.jpg

Omekharn and crew play 'chase the dread' - obviously he hasn't told his 'friends' those dreads have double flamer templates. Somewhere along the way the Sorcerer once again got sucked into the warp. I think he likes it there.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3k_zpsc14a530d.jpg

They didn't make it. Khârn took 2 hull points off one of the dreads though. It squared off against my reaper dread, but neither managed to kill the other as the game ended. At the top of the pic the melta dread charged the vindicator and destroyed it. He had a great game.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/game3l_zps11533dda.jpg

On the right the other Iron Warriors dread took damage from the drake before it charged my havocs, killing all but the champ, who, though he had meltabombs, was unable to finish it off. On the other side, between the spawn, chaos marines and oblitorators, the warpsmith and his cultists were finished off. Jim ended up with 2 dreads on 1 hull point each, but he ended up taking out quite a lot of my small units. Result: Win, 11-7.

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q565/dan_wellington1/colinvsjohn_zps6c2cc710.jpg

In the other game, John's Emperor's children trounced the Word Bearers, Colin's luck obviously not improving much.

We counted up the scores, I finished on 29 victory points. Jim's Iron Warriors managed a respectable score of 16 IIRC, while Colin's Word Bearers should have prayed harder, being left with something like 8 points. However in the end, it was the Emperor's Children who achieved perfection, winning all three games and scoring 30 points! (I Could really have done with a couple more points from game 2!)

In the end we all had fun (I think Colin felt better after he bought a Contemptor from Forge World) and were well fed at Bugmans. (I recommend the BBQ ribs) Hope you enjoyed reading!

I do have one huge criticism though.

Terrain...

Looking at the pics you seem to have it set up with most of the terrain features in the deployment zones and huge fire lanes from deployment zone to deployment zone. Set up like that is near enough playing Warhammer. Try to have a few large LOS blockers closer to the centre of the table. Makes for a more interesting game I find.

I feel spoiled, not one or two. Three battle reports! All featuring my favourite army. msn-wink.gif
It was a nice read, and some beautiful collection you and your friends possess. Any chance that you would post some pictures of the two-headed heldrake?

Edit: Nevermind the pictures, found your thread here. :)

Yeah I agree, we used the terrain placement rules from the book, and I guess it was just luck of the dice that the centre was relatively unpopulated.
