Well not quiet a FAQ but the next best thing...

Message to GW.... Can you clarify the rules for the Space Wolf Thunderstrike formation please....Have emailed the FAQ team but heard nothing back.

If the drop pod wolf guard component of this force arrives turn 1 as per the drop pod assault rule does the wolf guard terminator squad arrive with them during turn 1 or do they have to arrive turn 2 as per the deep strike rule. If they dont do they arrive eperately turn 1 and 2 or do they need to be rolled for in turn 2. If this is the case could the wolf guard terminator be placed in a fast attack drop pod to enable both units to arrive turn 1.....

Response from GW.....Hey Scott,

Weirdly, we got asked this last week, too…

The formation all arrives together from turn 2 onwards using the rules for Deep Strike. The formation rules supersedes the Drop Pod Assault rule. As such, placing the Wolf Guard Terminators in another Drop Pod would not benefit the formation as they would still need to arrive by Deep Strike from the second turn onwards.

Hope that makes sense,

Dan

Wow, the thunderstrike is now useless. So now how do I get my terminators down turn 1. By adding more drop pods, or starting them on the table. Either way, it doesn't help my air assault list. So the only way for my warlord and his termies to do anything T1 is to start on the table. Thanks GW...

Im glad I waited for a conformation on this before I built a pointless wolf guard unit. I don't think we will see many Thunder strike formations being used, who wants to start will that many points off the board! It's more than a fully loaded stormwolf.

Indeed. I'm going to stick with my house rule, and build contingency lists, until we get the final word. I agree with skeletoro's point about the cost being a good justification for the turn 1 arrival. Just goes to show that GW doesn't playtest, which s the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

I really don't see a benefit to tying the formation to a die roll. 2 units tied to the same roll reduces the chance to get them in play in my mind. I might use it if they auto dropped turn 2, but that's still not great.

That's why I liked it, since before this, I used it as a first turn unit. Put down a whole lot of shooty right in my opponent's face and then watch him squirm when he assaulted them. I still think that drop pod assault is an auto pass on the reserve roll, and it makes sense that this would be an alfa-strike formation, so I'm going to go with my gut on this one, and ignore what some twerp from GW corporate says, until it comes out in an actual FAQ. Until then, I'll press on with what I think.

Besides, they've done bloody murder to the new necron codex from what I gather, some new psychic replacement gimmick (like power from pain), and loss of wargear.

I actually like the wargear from past codecies, let you customize all your characters... but I digress.

still makes a reasonable beta-strike formation (though heavily costed). Also given that you dont need to take an additional pod to force your WG pod into T2 (via drop pod assault) it actually works nicely with a non alpha-strike ground based force. Everything charges forward and as they move to meet you or panic with the TWC getting close you drop an anvil behind them. Not overly competitive but fun to play I'd say, who doesn't like a load of TL plasma?

I'm just a little torqued that we have no cheap ways to deliver termies t1. I really don't want to use another drop pod. I only have 5, and I really don't want more. I have around 10k as it is, I do not want to add more. As it is, I'm now putting my wolf lord with my voidclaws, which is not satisfactory, I like to put him with shooty termies. Although I suppose, having my balanced WL would give the voidclaws some extra overwatch. I don't know, I'm gonna need to play around with my lists.

That is precisely the reason why you do not see me making any SW lists anymore. I dislike drop pods. Don't me wrong, rulewise they are awesome!

But they are hard to transport (harder than a bloody land raider), unwieldy and have no personality at all. Maybe I am just not imaginative enough, but I find it hard to a pod a name or a legacy. It is a tin can made for delivery, whereas the content of said can writes the legacy. A Land Raider can forge a great legacy.

But that is beside the point. So yeah, TDA T1 is best done by DA followed by GK and depending on your available FA slots SW.

It doesn't make sense from a fluff perspective IMO. They are you elite alpha strike team that come in when the meat of the game is already over. They should either auto come in turn two, or loose TL and auto arrive turn one. At least something that makes them better than just buying them conventionally

I have a lot of FA slots open in my lists, since my FA is done by my storm wing, and I really don't use land speeders or TWC or claws, and when I take the stormwolf, it's a dedicated transport. Or when I do use FA slots it's usually to take my LS Tempests(stormtalons).

I don't understand their reasoning for the TDA's not being able to do their thing on turn one as putting them in a DP makes them arrive via Deep Strike the same as sending them in naked. That's why these miserable interceptors can blow away the contents of a pod, right?

While I prefer to play with my thunderwolves, I have upgraded my drop pod terminator list to 7th edition, and at 1750pts it's pretty sweet.  It is 9 pods, so there's that, but ooooh man...    dat alpha.

How do you carry that stuff around with you. Nine bloody pods. I'd gone berserk by now :D

I'll be honest with you.  It started as a test list and I've been proxying most of the pods - only really played it with my local gaming group.  I've never used it in a tournament.  The nice thing about proxying drop pods is you can use plastic cups if you find the right size.  A stack of 9 doesn't take up much more space than a drop pod or maybe two.  Then after the game?  Drinks!

I do own about 5 pods, but hate mix and matching so I ususally proxy all 9 for uniformity.

I've found that 3 pods, painted and bubble wrapped fit nicely in an older LR R/C box alternating ends /\ \/ /\.

I dont have more than that just because I hate painting them more than anything :)

You hit the nail on the head though Immer (as to why you should like them). They are great at what the main function is, a delivery system. No frills, no extras just exactly what Russ would have ordered, the right tools for the job. The legacy is for the heroes.
