Black_out's WIP Log....custodes incoming!

If I get good enough at using my memory I promise to update this as often as possible whenever I'm assembling or painting some units for my NL legion army.

That being said, I don't trust my memory much lol.

Please forgive these first photos until I can manage to figure out my lighting situation and eventually get some better shots!

First up is my NL Contemptor Dreadnought I finished about a week ago. It's my first painted model for the army and I'm rather happy with how it came out (even if i managed to botch the painting plan), following this awesome guide on Youtube: *This is NOT my video*

Black primer basecoat followed by Vallejo Premium Dark Blue through my airbrush, after that I used Vallejo Premium Cobalt blue for a light highlight-dusting also through the airbrush and topped it off with a wash of old GW Asurman Blue (this is where I messed up, I was *supposed* to follow up with a wash of Nuln Oil, but am still happy enough with the final product).

The big guy has both arms magnetized so that I can keep everything interchangeable.

I also just started on my Night Raptors. These are simply primed black then airbrushed dark blue and dusted with the cobalt blue layers\. They'll be washed soon enough!

Assembled my first 5 Terror Squad marines this morning and since I'm off for a snow day I'll finish the other 5 shortly. They'll all be built on SecretWeapon corpse field bases and the chainglaive came from Anvil Industries

the following is to be used as constructive critique

it might be the pictures, but the blue on the dread looks a little flat and i think he needs more lightning.

i like the chainglaive, but i would put some more details on the terror squad to make them less uniform, because i think the all look kinda the same, despite different heads and minimal different posing.

nonetheless i'm looking forward to seeing more of your guys :tu:

I'm actually waiting on some bits to dress them up, I thought they all came out looking rather plain too

As for the lightning I've been practicing trying to get it right before I add any more but it is in the works, I swear!

Any suggestions on how to give them more flavor would be great as well!

Thanks for posting up!!

Edit: I really think it's the camera flash causing the blue to lose its depth

You're off to a good start mate! Nice contemptor and a great looking reaver squad.

I'll echo wicced in his offered feedback:

The following is some awesome advice I got from krautScientist here on the exact same issue, namely making your marines more characterful. His advice was on Night Lords specific, but with some different bits it might as well be used for any marine of any legion or chapter.

Start to see your Marines as characters. Each and every one of them. You don't need to lavish the same amount of attention on each of them, but it'll change the way you think about them. I know it did for me. And if your Contemptors are true characters -- and they very much are, seeing the care you've taken building and painting them, then so are your Marines. So, instead of building a squad of five footsloggers, build a squad of five veterans of the Long War. For one of them, it might mean skeleton helmet wings. For another, some flensing knives on his hip. The heavy weapons guy may be particularly fond of the skull of an Imperial commissar he has nailed to his backpack, cap and all. And so on. I think it's this what makes Brother Heinrich's models so amazing in that respect.

Or, in one sentence: Some of these guys are 10,000 years old, so show them some respect!

About the flat blue colour: you have an airbrush and you've been scouring the YouTubes for material and tutorials. There's MASSIVE amounts of tuts on how to make proper lighting. My personal Night Lords blue recipe has four stages, all with Valejo VMA paint: base Midnight blue, soft highlight with French Blue, stronger highlight with Blue Angels Blue and then a strong edge highlight with Light Sea Blue, all done with an airbrush.

Hope this helps mate! Love to see more! If I can help you with anything, please ask. Either here, in the Murderer's call or even through a PM, there's always people willing to offer advice and feedback here. :tu:

I'll definitely take that into consideration! Giving them personalities makes it much easier to dress them up, brilliant!!

*goes to scour internet for lightning tutorials*

Oh and: please don't be overwhelmed by our offered advice. And don't feel obliged to follow ANY advice offered here. It's meant well, but they're YOUR models and it's YOUR hobby. So do what YOU enjoy.:thumbsup:

this might be the most important advice and i strongly second this :tu:

  • 2 weeks later...

Sooooo these guys arrived the other day, I've set to assembling and magnetizing every. Single. One. It's a chore but having the option to swap between any weapon combination will be worth it!

Only issue is....I have no idea where I can get more shoulder pads to finish all the arms :/ any suggestions?

Also, due to an error I received Tartaros pattern power axes so now I have to wait until my Cataphractii sets arrive so I can begin magnetizing all that as well!

Looking sweet! Where did you get those bases?

They're from Secret Weapon Miniatures, specifically the "corpse field" versions but they have loads of others in all shapes and sizes along with other things too!

Nor I! Just waiting on parts to arrive to finish all the magnetizing that I can Night Lords-ify the models some and then PAINT!

I LOVE this laptop, best money I think I've spent on an electronic device

yes, they absolutely need some trophies, flayed skin and the like. maybe some bat wings that arch back from their "hunchbacks" :tu:

Oh yes yes yes muahahaha....question about the flayed skin. I've seen the GS tutorial but have zero ssculpting skill (but I'm working on it) any idea where I might find pre made flayed skin?

hmn, other than bits from forgeworld (sevatar's and curze's capes) i'm not sure. i always tried sculpting them myself, with varying degrees of success

just practice enough and it'll soon be child's play :tu:

About the shoulder pads. I did the same thing and was lucky enough to get tons of pads from Bits&Kits. They have now stopped selling FW bits however, so your best legal option is to order the Death Guard Shoulder pads and sand off the BG symbols... Or at least the star around the skulls, so you could sculpt or freehand batwings (or a lion's mane for Atramentar) around the skulls. Does that help?

Immensely! Trim the scythes off one side and do my best to sculpt some fangs or wings on the DG skulls and, failing that, just shaving them off entirely! I'll check out FW later

So in my infinite wisdom, I realized I need some smaller magnets in order to get the melee weapons to be interchangeable for the left arms. In doing so however, the smaller magnets I ordered aren't quite strong enough to hold the weapons securely.

I'm having the internal debate of ordering extra left arms and gluing each type of weapon, therefore requiring additional shoulder pads on top of those I already need. Or try to find a similarly sized yet stronger magnet.

The ones I currently have that aren't working all that well are 1/16 x 1/32. I also have 1/8 x 1/16 magnets at my disposal but they're a bit large for the wrist joint..

Opinion on my dilemma?

Evening!

Your blues are looking quite lovely so far, and I always approve of any and all terminators (I have this thing for +2 armor saves :D )

But I'm super curious about something a few posts up...

OK I could help with that, because I've been into the whole magnet craze and at some point I had Berzerkers where the only things glued where the torso to the legs. Everything else was held together by magnets.

Magnets come in sizes and charges. The bigger, the stronger -generally, but shape and their charge also help. Us modelling hobbyists generally tend to work with cilinders for their practicality in and them fitting in holes you drilled, so you can't do anything about that. Seeing as you're trying to magnetize small parts, you're probably using really tiny magnets. Now, I am a sane person and thus use the metric system (), so I have no idea how large Imperial 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 measurements are. I advice using 1x2mm cilinders and if you REALLY want to change weapons, then at least include the hand holding the weapon in - as the hands provide a nice box in which to fit a magnet, and it helps that it connects to another nice cillinder (the lower arm) in which to put the other magnet. Seeing as we're stuck on size and shape, the strength of the magnets by necessity depends on the charge, or the N value. For the kind of fit you're after I recommend an N value of at least 42, but 48 is better. You can get great magnets in any quantity with SUPER FAST shipping from this site:

You are seriously the greatest! Luckily I speak the metric system too so no worries. Thanks for the help I'll be ordering some of those in a moment!
