Chaos Space Marines/Fallout/Undead Apocalypse

Recommended Posts

Hi folks!

I've had a blog running for the past year or so, and figured I'd set up shop here too.

I mainly paint/model miniatures for Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Space Marines and some miniatures in both the Fallout videogame and post-apocalyptic veins.

At the moment, I'm touching up a few of my older Night Lord models to have that extra shine in their eye lenses and going over some areas that missed when highlighting. Before that, I was modelling up an old Night Lord Predator to make it extra heretical!

And before that, I was going through a six-man Noise Marine squad painted in the old Emperor's Children colours:

There's a lot more to upload in order to keep this topic up-to-date, but for now this should do! I'll have to upload the images of my work-in-progress Fallen Angels army later on. I'll also have to update this topic to have a proper actual introduction, but that's for later!

Okay, so some background on what exactly I'm doing here:

I began collecting Warhammer eleven years ago, when I was thirteen. I started off with a Dark Elf army, because the fluff was brilliant. I loved the idea of footsoldiers summoning demi-gods on the field of battle in Warhammer, and how evil the Dark Elves were. Despite not being able to summon any gods of their own, their sense of pure evilness, their selfishness and how callously they treated their slaves just attracted me to them. I still prefer this type of fluff over most 40K fluff, as Fantasy fluff is more realistic than 1000 superhumans being able to take over an entire world. The fluff was incredible to me at the time and I still reminisce over it from time to time.

Thirteen-year old me began with the sixth edition starter set and a box of Dark Elf Warriors, which I had to assemble as they were not snap-fit models like the ones in the starter set. The Warriors did not survive.

I fondly remember trying to play the game with my regiment of Dark Elf warriors taking on the Empire soldiers on my kitchen worktop, from one side of the room to the other, where the majority of empire soldiers were huddled inside or around a small, burned out cardboard building. The starter set was Empire vs. Orcs, with the aforementioned cardboard building thrown in to mix things up. After a while, I had about six Executions, three Black Guards, three Witch Elves, a Repeater Bolt thrower, about ten Corsairs and two Dark Riders. For anyone who doesn't know much about fantasy, infantry blocks usually require at least ten models to a unit, so you could see that I wasn't putting much thought into planning my army. But I didn't know that people bothered with silly things like actually following the rules, so I was quite happy with how things were going. I never even considered painting a single model at the time either.

This went on for a while until the only other fantasy player in my area left without notice. Luckily another friend of mine played 40K, so the Battle for Macragge box set was next on my list.

I picked up the set, containing Space Marines and Tyranids, and decided that I would collect space marines from then on (Who didn't go for marines first?!). I collected more of these models than I did of my Dark Elves, amassing many metal models and branching out quite a bit. I shifted from vanilla marines, to Dark Angels, to Space Wolves and finally settling back on Dark Angels. I still have the original Interrogator Chaplain whose name escapes me at the moment. I bought a full Terminator squad (Old-squatting style ones!), a metal veteran squad, Azrael, a full scout squad, two full tactical squads, a Dreadnought, three Assault Marines boxes, a Rhino Veteran Sergeant Naaman and I'm sure a few more that I can't recall at the moment.

A series of bad games eventually gave me a dislike of my army, and after deciding that Marines were boring, I picked up Chaos Space Marines. At the time, the legion rules from the 3.5 codex were in effect, so I ended up going the safe route with the Black Legion. I didn't want to restrict myself to not being able to field Daemons, so it made sense at the time. I tried to paint some models, but I simply didn't have the patience to finish any but two models (Which still stand on my display case to this day).

I went several years without playing after this, then went on and off of Warhammer throughout school. Near the end of school, I picked up the Black Reach box set. I can't really remember where or when exactly. Over this time, I picked up a lot of what my Chaos army consists of, such as my Defiler, Predator, several Rhino's and the very old now/very expensive Chaos Space Marine Megaforce. At this point I also leaned more towards the Night Lords than the Black Legion, as I was no longer constricted by the 3.5 legion rules. I was also painting at the stage, albeit quite poorly, which started off my painting to-do list!

Coming towards the end of college, I picked up the Dark Vengeance box set along with very few models. I really didn't want to expand much more on my armies, as I had tonnes to paint already and was only just starting to catch up. I eventually started my blog, which you can see in my signature, and started off on a quest to paint everything I own. The last models I bought were four for Christmas (Two Hasslefree Miniatures -Clint and Beth, The Emperors Champion and Typhus) and I hope to whittle down my list of models to paint as the years go on. There's a comparison to the Long War that could be made here, but I'll leave that up to someone else!

So that's where I stand currently. I have a lot of models to clean, convert and paint up, and am making progress as time goes on. All my armies are tied in with my Chaos Space Marine army in some way, such as the Orkz painted/modeled as warp-mutated/tainted chaos worshippers (Which I originally saw in a White Dwarf), the Dark Angels painted/modeled as Fallen Angels and the Space Marines simply converted into Chaos, in one form or another. I have also recently toyed with the idea of using some of my Dark Elves as a Lost and the Damned force or simply as Cultists, but that's an idea further down the line.

So how about some more images?

I loved painting Krannon. It was a challenging, but rewarding, model to paint.

So yeah, that's a big chunk of my work so far in the hobby! If you have any suggestions or tips, I would gladly hear them. As mentioned previously, I am working on touching up some of my old Night Lord models (areas missed when highlighting, lens shine on helmet, highlighting black with dark grey, etc) before continuing on to other models. So expect to see some of that work on here next!

You can see more of other stuff I've done on my blog too, but most of the good stuff I have already posted.

I think I'll talk about some musings I've had about army fluff in my next post, as I think some of the models I have could do with some background. I've seen this being done before and it can really add to a project when models are simply paint and plastic/metal. A story can really bring them to life sometimes.

Anyway, until then, seeya!

Okay, so basically I have separated all of my models into a bunch of different ongoing projects.

I'll be working on the following projects throughout 2015. I set myself these goals in January and hope to continue working on them throughout the year.

2015

-6 Noise Marines (100%)

-50 Night Lords Infantry (42%/22%)

-28 Fallen Angels (35.71%)

-10 Chaos Space Marine Mercenaries (10%)

-11 Night Lord Chosen (9.09%)

-4 Christmas models (0%)

-8 Chaos Space Marine Vehicles (0%)

The Noise Marines, Fallen Angels, Chaos Mercenaries and Night Lord Chosen can all be seen in the above images. You can also see the modelling work-in-progress on my Predator.

The Noise Marines were a particularly funny squad, as I started/finished the first three in early/mid 2014, then finished the rest of the squad in January 2015. They're finished now, regardless.

The Night Lord infantry were originally base-coated and fully painted. Unfortunately, I then discovered how great highlighting and basing could make a model look... Then before I finished highlighting everything, I discovered how I had missed some edges on all of the work done so far, and how much better adding that lens shine to their helmets could make them look. Seriously, I've got a major chip on my shoulder when it comes to these models. Once these are 100% done, I'm NOT going over them again! The first percentage relates to the highlights done the first time around. The second relates to the percentage of overall models that have been given the "lenses and finishing touches" treatment.

My Fallen Angels are mainly from the Dark Vengeance set, as you can see above. They also include some metal models from my earlier Dark Angel days, which I mentioned above. If you actually read it all, I appreciate it! It also includes five Dark Angels from a starter painting set. I still have to get through my converted metal Azrael, Captain Balthasar, my metal Asmodai conversion (Fallen Angel Dark Apostle), eight more infantry, two Bikers and five Terminators.

The Chaos Mercenary Squad is essentially a project where each model is painted differently. They're meant to be a squad of ragtag renegades that sell their expertise for a price. So far, I have a Dragon Warrior painted up as "the Meltagun guy", but these guys will each have their own "thing" and their warband origin will be unique to each member in the squad. I've enjoyed the variance in colour schemes so far, so this project should be entertaining! So far, I hope to have the following warbands represented in this squad:

-Skyrar's Dark Wolves.

-Hakanor's Reavers.

-Dragon Warriors.

-Death Shadows.

-Claws of Lorek.

-The Reborn.

-Sons of Vengeance.

-Night Killers.

-Brotherhood of Darkness/Swords of Darkness. Not sure which, but they have similar paint schemes and I want variety in this squad.

-Company of Misery/Knights of Blood. See above.

See the following link for more details on this

The Night Lord Chosen marked the beginning of a group in my army that rejects Chaos, in the same vein as Talos Valcoran and First Claw did. Sevatar also rejected chaos, so I believe that some remnants of these beliefs should exist in my warband too. This squad is the beginning of that remnant.

The Christmas models are, straight-forwardly enough, models that I bought for Christmas. I purchased an Emperor's Champion, Typhus - Herald of Nurgle, and Hasslefree Clint and Beth.

The big one on this list is the Vehicles project. This consists of three Dreadnoughts, a Defiler, a Land Raider, two Rhinos and a Predator. I want all of these machines to look unique too, so I'm not just going to spray and paint them. There will be a good chunk of time spent modelling them up too, as you can see on the Predator above. I'll be spending some time scouring bitz sites looking for bits and pieces of bodies and other scary things that'll fit in well with the rest of my army. They'll all be painted in Night Lord colours too, even the Defiler. I was inspired by a display piece for the Night Lords where Decimus of the 10th company was leading a force of Night Lords that had incorporated the more chaotic elements of the legion as well as the traditional non-chaos worshipping NIght Lord elements. It looked really cool to see fluff-accurate Daemon engines and true Chaos Space Marines in a Night Lords army, which is something I want to emulate with my army. That said, several elements will be non-chaotic too, such as the Predator seen above.

That's pretty much everything I want to get done for this year, and if I do it'll be a very productive year! I do of course have other plans for the rest of my models, most of which can be seen below. For now however, I'll be focusing on the above list.

The following projects are currently on the back-burner. If I can finish the above project, I'll get going non these again:

-Crimson Slaughter (Krannon, Draznichts Ravagers, the Hellbrute and a squad of Possessed. I might convert up some loyalists to look like the marines on the Crimson Slaughter supplement cover too.)

-Orkz (Black Reach Orkz with an extra squad of Boyz)

-Cultists (Fifty cultists, consisting of the Dark Vengeance cultists and converted Guardsmen, Catachans and Dark Eldar Wyches)

-Chaos Spawn (Four out of ten done, I got these guys from an Apocalypse box set ages ago.)

-Fallout (These are basically conversions that I've done on Warzone/Warhammer miniatures)

-Overall Chaos Space Marines (This means all of my Chaos Space Marines, which consists of 237 models.)

-Daemons of Chaos (I haven't got that many to get through, thank god!)

Project Crimson Slaughter (Any Chaos stuff from Dark Vengeance, plus a squad of possessed)

Thanks for the feedback Pearson and Death!

I'm almost done with retouching some Night Lord infantry. After that, I'll be moving onto some older models in the group.

http://enchantedbluepot.blogspot.ie/2015/02/hey-folks-in-between-watching-episodes.html

First up, progress on the Night Lords so far:

Secondly, this is what Tamiya Grass Effect does to tanks:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0mBRhqWOJvE/VOpUZQt0nxI/AAAAAAAAAvk/qddXBhRquc4/s1600/DSC04923.JPG

Thirdly, I have changed up how some of my Chaos Mercenaries look. They look far more closer to fluff now, and include a Black Legion Oath-Broken member now too. In order, these are the Black Legion Oath-Broken, a Brotherhood of Darkness Astartes and a Disciple of Destruction:

Lastly, Hasslefree Clint, to fit in with the zombie-apocalypse vibe:

That last image was as clean a close-up as I could get. As usual, any constructive criticism is appreciated.

How have I never thought of giving a Chaos Marine a hook hand? Genius! Not a fan of that Possessed head on the Brotherhood of Darkness guy though, looks way too big.

Also, I'd like to urge you to consider scheduling a large block of painting time from May to August, and joining the cause of thrashing everyone else in the ETL for the second year running.

@Dragonlover: You have only inspired his new nickname ("Fat-head the Unbreakable")... I really wanted to use one of the old-style Possessed heads though, so I think I'll keep it. I wanted the model to look more imposing than the other one (Hence the Powerfist), as he'll be an Aspiring Champion for the squad.

Also, the hook-hand was inspired by the Oath-Broken artwork in the Black Legion supplement too, as well as their description (The missing hand on the artwork, the text on grafting Xenos appendages to sockets, etc.)

Thanks for the feedback though!

@Death: Cheers! There's more to come!

I ended up re-angling the head by removing green stuff and chopping him up a bit. I think it makes the head look smaller... Opinions?

And now the other half of everyones favourite duo from The Last Of Us:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Geg98RTbeMk/VQ8MCvscVXI/AAAAAAAAAyI/b8Q-HQrfeBQ/s1600/DSC04961.JPG

As well as some more Night Lords of course!

My favourite out of this batch of "Lords" is the one with the loyalist bolter.

The next model I'll be tackling on my desk will be Typhus, Host of the Destroyer Hive... Which I have found to be quite fun to paint!

As usual, go here: http://enchantedbluepot.blogspot.ie/2015/03/could-you-be.html in order to view more images, etc.

Thanks for looking!
