So, it turns out I have not net my challenge and I am admitting failure.... :(

I probably have the time to finish my last unit, the terminators tonight, but I feel they would be rushed and not up to the quality I would want them. I also used my painting time this weekend to do my sicaran rather than finish them (which wasn't in my challenge!) however I feel I managed to get a lot more done by participating in the challenge.

So thank you Augustus and I will leave you with what I managed to get done, individual pics can be found in my plog

It's 23:24 here at my place and after a 10 hour painting marathon I just finished my two dreads. :smile.:

So without further ado, I say "Myles", they say:

Actually what about the poor guy in Samoa & AM. Sam (Ameriacan Samoa)?

Looks like they are next door to each other, but 1 is +13 and the other -11 hours. How confusing must that get??

Anyhoo, good luck guys & gals!!

They look sweet ISM. Love the paint job on them and the way you've differentiated between the leader and followers. Nice crisp chevrons too. The sons of Perturabo are happy and we march ever towards victory. Well done on your completion.

Time now to start getting ready for the ETL.

Wow! The Arena is finally closed! I have to say it's been an awesome ride. This was the first event I hosted here on BnC and I have to admit it was a ton of fun doing it. The relatively high rate of participation and overall excellent quality of the miniatures produced by everyone has been a positively thrilling experience for me, and I hope it's been the same for all. I've met a LOT of new people here, most of whom even have their own WIP threads, so I can enjoy their contributions in the future.

APRIL 19th DEADLINE

COMPLETIONS
First up of course is the april 19th deadline round-up. Again, many awesome contributions. Mostly vehicles this time, which to me was a happy surprise (I love vehicles), but very high quality and I noticed that most characters completed had a lot of, well, character. :smile.: Very singular models, which is awesome. Before I list the frater that have completed their challenges on time, I want to give a shout-out to ShVagYer, who, although he did not meet the april 5th deadline, did continue and post his finished squad of Thousand Sons. To thread on even when failure is certain shows character. Big ups, mate! Alright, here's the final list of frater that have met their deadline:

200plus, Atia, AndrewChristlieb, Augustus b'Raass, Barabbas Sogalon, Brother SP, Carlston793, Flint13, Iron Skull Mask, Mactire, Teetengee

All of the above-mentioned Frater have earned the right to wear the VICTOR badge. Bear them with pride, my brothers and sisters! :smile.: :biggrin.:

FAILURES

Unfortunately this deadline too saw a relatively high amount of frater who failed to complete their challenge. All have been a shame, especially when some frater had already begun their vows. A special mention goes to frater Fangbanger, who vowed multiple units of Space Wolves (even though the rules stated to vow only one  ) and was halfway through his last unit of terminators, when he got distracted by a damned Sicaran battle tank. He decided to go and paint that, and so sadly missed the deadline for the last unit of termies. :ohmy.: Such is the folly of hobby butterflies! Here is a list of all frater who have failed to meet the april 19th deadline deadline.

Brother Chaplain Kage, Brother Excedis, Brother Heinrich, Dolchiate Remembrancer, Fangbanger, Grotsmasha, Kastor Krieg, Khârn the Bloody, Rashbold, Stoneheart, and The Psycho

The above-meantioned Frater have failed in their duties and must bear the badge of shame, the MEA CULPA. Bear them as a reminder of your failure and with the determination to redeem yourself, my brothers and sisters!

And finally, two very subjective prizes, but very important ones nonetheless.

MOST IMPRESSIVE COMPLETION

I award this badge to Brother-Captain Arkhan for his excellent Raven Guard Captain:
This miniature had it all: perfect presentation, awesome fluff, great pose, and an awesome paint job. What's more, and this I particularly enjoyed, was how Brother-Captain Arkhan used the event to its fullest:
he asked for advice, included us in the building process of his miniature, and incorporated our feedback in the final build.
Brother-Captain Arkhan, please accept your badge (choose one, and I won't hold it against you if you choose the imperial version )

MOST SUPPORTIVE CHALLENGER

This prize goes to AndrewChristlieb. Andrew came late, but he stayed. He was very present throughout the event, and gave support, praise, and feedback to not only his own challengee, but to many other frater as well. I was particularly impressed with this particular piece of positive, constructive and super helpful feedback he gave Lucio:

Great Scott! That was quick sir, I really like how your headpieces came out, it's a fraking pain to paint lines like that and yours look really nice, especially given that it's red and yellow with black lining... esh@!#$ Your metallics are looking pretty good too with a nice even application and the red you got on the armor has a nice grimey chaosy feel to it (with washes I gather from your wip thread). All in all a good looking unit.

Of course it would be remiss of me in my duties if I didn't nitpick and offer some suggestions! So beware ahead there be spoilers.

Starting from the bottom. I like your use of materials for the basing, but the grey color peeking through makes it look like either the base itself or the debris on top is unfinished. I would try to paint the top of the base in your ground color to help it blend in. In this case a light brown or tan would make the stones blend into the base better. Also you might look into a finer stone for the base, If it's a desert or rocky terrain you're going for a fine sand can be picked up cheap at most garden shops and would give a more convincing covering. You could then use one or two of the rocks you have here to decorate the base without having the guys ankle deep and still get a rocky feel. Finally I would try and clean up the rims before you're going to paint them. I usually take a fine sand paper and try to smooth the base rim once I'm done to both clean up any over spills and to shave off any lumps that I can. That smooth surface really does make a difference for your paint if you choose to paint them (or you can leave them black to separate the "base" from the "basing".

That was the big one for me, but there are a couple other little nitpicks to help improve them overall. First and this is a big one for me... Purity Seals. There are a few there and that's fine really, but you have a great opportunity with those to do something fun since these are Chaos by twisting them into some sort of "impurity seal".  Maybe make a colorful warp spiral or even paint some spikes on them and then finish them off with some parchment paper and your gods emblem or hate mail etc... That or shave them off, but the other sounds like a lot more fun. :biggrin.: Also a minor modeling thing, but pin vices are pretty cheap and a drilled barrel looks awesome for very little effort.

Also take a bit of time and run back over them again looking for touch ups, especially with the armor since it's the biggest area. The guy front and center (I think that was your test) has got a pretty big spill over of green from the eyes onto the helmet. While we're on paint try applying your wash to the tabards and laying them on their backs so the wash sinks into the folds instead of pooling at the bottoms.

Andrew, your contributions, constructive feedback, and general presence in this event have been exemplary to us all, and were exactly the kind of contributions I envisioned when I was designing the event.

Thank you, and please accept the Badge of the Most Supportive Challenger!

AFTERWORD
This was my first event hosted here at Bolter and Chainsword. My aim was to host an event that would bring the frater closer together and that would yield great miniatures. Overall, I am very happy with the result. We have seen a ton of awesome miniatures and from time to time there were some laughs! Spirits were high throughout, and except for the inevitable lesser interest mid-deadline, participation and contributions were high.

Future changes
I will host this again, with some vital changes to the format.
1. Future event will have one deadline, with registration period of two weeks and then three to complete challenges.
2. Contrary to this time, I will actually only allow reciprocal challenges. I really liked the spirit of kinship this yielded. The best example was probably the challenge between Biohazard and KrautScientist.
3. Challengers will challenge each other to models with a similar difficulty and/or size.
This will hopefully yield a more intense feeling of an actual 'challenge', and also create stronger bonds between mutual challengers. PLease feel free to let me know what you guys think of these changes.

Thanks
To Captain Semper and Grotsmasha who provided me with excellent feedback on the parameters of the rules of the event, to Forté for his endless patience and supreme efforts in designing all the badges and medallions, and lastly to all the participants of Augustus' Arena!

Thanks everyone, I had a blast and will host this event again!

Grats to the deserving winners of the special rewards, and 200plus for going all three rounds.  And to everyone who succeeded at their vows, Augustus, etc.

And now, on to the ETL.  And carpal tunnel. :sleep.:

Thanks a lot, Auggie, for hosting this event! Cheers for the shout out -- I was actually really happy to finally have an excuse to paint my model for Lord Captain Lorimar, and I am pretty sure Biohazard feels the same way about his own Lord Deimos!

Great job all around, everyone -- lots and lots of stunning models and squads came out of this! A very special congratulations to Brother-Captain Arkhan: That Raven Guard piece is fantastic, indeed!

As for the future changes, I think going for mutual challenges is really the way to go, although I can sympathise with Teetengee's remark above -- need we really enforce any kind of value or similarity of models in the first place, I wonder? If the event should be focused on mutual challenges, I think those things will come naturally in a "Oh, you challenge me to paint X? Then I challenge you to pain Y!" kind of way, and it seems unlikely that X will be a single Space Marine and Y will be an Imperial Knight. Just my two cents.

Anyways, ladies and gentlemen, it has been a treat. Tadah! ;)
