An Excorsist Space Marine!

Hey guys!!! Here's one finished Excorsist Marine. I created him for =][=. A few buddies wanted to play so I made one special. Welcome to the stage Brother-Sergeant Solomon. I always loved the Excorsists color scheme and chapter creation so I though why not. I would absolutely love feedback. For me this is hands down my best painted marine so I would love to hear what the great painters of the community would suggest. I'm here to learn. So he is equipped with a phobos and some other stuff to look tacticool and more like a lone operator.  I realize the pictures kinda suck so bear with me I wanted to put something up and will retweek the photos as I figure out how to make a good photo station and more consistent lighting.

Good stuff! The Exorcists don't get nearly enough love.

If you're looking for critique, here are a few things to be aware of:

- the mold line on left leg

- paint spill-over of one colour into the next space where it's not meant to be (black dab over from left shoulder pad trim into the pad field, red dab onto the skull of the chapter

emblem on left pad and left leg are just a few examples)

- you've left the BA blood drop on his chest piece

- the green on the purity seal at his rear looks a little out of place, and is probably a fair bit too thick for what you want

- the skull/aquila on his backpack looks very "tacked on" and extraneous

I haven't been involved in the hobby in years and am only returning now - I haven't painted in over a decade. So don't take this in any way as someone saying they can do better - you've done a great job and I like him. Just trying to offer what I think you're after :)

Cheers!

hey dude. error most people make and its such a shame is keep your paints thin. i can see on the right arm its really started to thicken up and your losing a bit of detail. its always better, and it get said all the time, more thin layers of paint is much better than one thick one i would also go back to some of the upper hard edges and do some highlights!

the consistency your looking for is just a tad thicker than milk.. and when it comes to highlighting you'll get some nice smooth transitions

plus if you keep your paints thin and get a brush with a nice point you wont need any chopped u tooth picks!

hope that helps buddy!

I get that completely, I know I need to thin the paints out.... I'm slowly getting better about it. I think part of me just want to get it done and I rush it for that reason. For the future I will try to do more of those things. Thank you for the feedback!!!

PS- I love your Sevatar model!!! Good god dude, that face is spectacular!!!!

Any comments and criticisms? Also I had to do a purple bolter tongue.png

Please Guys!!!!! I'm trying to improve and tutorials only help so much.

The photos are a bit poor, so this is working with what I can see clearly, and skipping over things already mentioned (that mold line!).

The whole thing seems oddly gritty, in a tactile sense. Perhaps too much matte varnish, or the model was dusty when you sealed it. Or it was never sealed, and it's just plain dusty. The backpack icon is growing hair laugh.png

The wash you used on the base is still very high gloss. If you need to use that much to get the color you want, you may want to consider painting the base separately from the model, so you can matte varnish it more thoroughly without risking a 'frosting' of the marine.

I would steer away from purple weapons. Being so close to the deep crimson marine (I always though the Exorcists were a brighter shade, but dealer's choice) the change in hue won't really show up, and the bolter normally serves a good purpose of breaking up the solid color of a marine's silhouette, typically as black and/or silver.

I would work on your bone technique. The skulls seem to be one solid color, or two at most. A three color palette is what I roll with, and it helps to make a typically smooth shape look more defined. A deeper tan (old Graveyard earth) with a lighter tan highlight (Kommando Khaki) and a very select highlight of off white (Bleached Bone). Sorry but I don't know the equivalents in the newer paint range. Save the super deep browns for the eye sockets and nose. Even on a very smooth surface like the shoulder skull's face, it would help if you could fake a more detailed surface by applying those paints in the appropriate places. That isn't easy though. A slightly more distinct dark line between the bone and the surrounding red may help, too.

It's not easy to tell with these pics, but there seems to be a bit of metal flake spilling over around his gorget into the red., as well as around the icons on his right pauldron. It's generally best in my opinion to knock out metallics first, especially if you are doing drybrush, which sends the reflective bits everywhere. Just be mindful that holding on to the metal parts prior to sealing can spread around and rub off the reflective medium, too.

I would consider a slightly more visibly bright highlight color for the red. Either that, or a second, finer, brighter highlight. It looks very mute in the pics.

The rest comes down to fine detail and finesse of the highlighting. Highlighting edges is brutal work and takes years of practice, but I have a few pointers that should help. First, get your paintbrush to a point. The easiest method is, after getting the paint on the brush, gently pull/drag it with a gentle spiraling motion along a surface that is smooth and won't suck the paint up, like a plastic palette. Assuming the brush isn't garbage quality or too worn out, it will urge the tip into a fine point.

Second, when highlighting, use the brush's edge whenever possible. I know, odd advice after saying to get the tip into a point. But if you are highlighting a raised edge, like the corner of the shoulder pads's trim, it is better to use the side of the brush and pass it along the corners in (preferably one) smooth stroke. You will get a very fine line without any really visibly brushstrokes.

Third, you can (almost) always clean up mistakes. On the bolter for instance, the highlights around the breach are a bit thick and sloppy. You can go back with the original shade of purple and clear away the excess until you are left with a crisp, thin line of the highlight shade.

For thinning paint, I recommend you give flow aid products a look. I use Liquitex Flow Aid. Put it in a dropper bottle with a 10:1 ratio of water:flow aid. Put the paint on a palette, add a drop, stir, and look for a consistency roughly that of skim milk.

Haha I know the mold line is there..... and that hair isn't there anymore, it was subject to a purge.

As far as washing: I realize exactly what you mean and tried to do it on a more recent model. (Look for a WIP imperial fists thread soon). I was reading the black dragons tutorial and as dumb as this sounds realized I never shook the nuln oil pot before applying. That has made a huge freaking difference!!!!

Check on the highlighting as well. I have a brush just for that and have practiced so as to be more precise. No where near perfection but I'm getting there.

Both of these have helped immensely!!! I can''t thank you guys enough for the constructive criticism.

plus Thanks for the compliments mate! just what a bit of patience can do that face took me about 3 hours.... I normally complete a whole mini in that time hahah!
