Hey everyone,

I've been a lurker here for a long time, but never had much to post.  I started a new project and thought it would be a good opportunity to track my progress and get some outside input.

My last power armour project was a true-scale Khârn and squad that still isn't finished years later.  I am a huge fan of true-scaling, but after much deliberation I decided I wanted to finally finish a squad before a year passed! After pondering color scheme for a long time I have settled on Taurans. They are very uncommon, and I'm a big fan of split color schemes.

I want to write down some goals here that I hope it will help me push myself to improve my painting:

 - Venture into airbrushing. I think this is the next step in improving my painting

 - Experiment in weathering techniques

 - Improve my glazing and wet-blending abilities

 - Improve my basic photography

 - Experiment with freehand

I'm not a competitive player and I paint very slowly.  My ultimate goal is to have a visually appealing army that I enjoy fielding on the table.  I'm starting with 500 points and will slowly expand to 1000.

Initial list:

Librarian

5 marines, Flamer, Powerfist, Razorback

8 marines, Plasmagun, Combi-plasma

5 devastators, 2 Heavy Bolters, 2 Rocket Launchers

I'm going for a heavily weathered, battle-worn force and minor conversions on most models. First WIP's of the 5 man squad.  Still waiting on some bits to finish the sergeant.

Always looking for inspiration, input and suggestions.

Cheers,

I really enjoy projects like this. I think starting off with a small force, building each model with a little unique flair makes for a super characterful force. Your first steps and conversions look great! (I'm a sucker for good looking city rubble bases)

Could you elaborate on the color scheme a bit? I will admit to a complete cluelessness concerning The Taurans. I actually thought someone was poking fun at the Minotaurs with a plog title before I poked my head in ^_^

Thank you for the kind words all.

Regarding colour scheme - the link Draakur posted is what I will be going for.  I suppose it's not a traditional split scheme, but hey, they are two colours!

While they are listed as bone coloured armour and black greaves, I'm going to be going for a more pure white scheme. While playing Dawn of War 2 - Last Stand, I came across the Taurans Commander and fell for the scheme. Unfortunately, I am a ways off the painting stage.  I would like to purchase an airbrush which hasn't happened yet.  The low Canadian dollar right now is hampering my search.  I have my eye on a barely used Badger Krome right now but if the price goes too high I'm going to try and snag a Badger Patriot 105.  Then it's narrowing down a compressor, shipping, practice etc.

Side note: If anyone knows of somewhere to snag cheap plug-marines please let me know.  I need a few to practice the scheme and some weathering techniques on.

Update:

Here is the mock-up for the Sergeant to the 5 man squad.  The powerfist arm and gun wrist are magnetized so I can swap weapons.  The legs will be replaced with a set of Vanguard legs when my bits order arrives. (Shipping from Australia to Canada has been slow of late)

Close up of his base.  The bends/dents in the oil drum were made by heating the plastic with a lighter.

Here's a mock-up of the Heavy Bolter for the 8 man squad.  Pretty happy with how the drum turned out, just wondering if it is a bit too large?

Also finished a few more bases for the 8 man squad:

Until next time,

Hey man, diggin' those bases, and your poses are top notch! happy.png

I especially like what you did with the flamer marine, lovely cabling idea that i may have to snatch from ya.

The heavy Bolter drum is wicked cool, but a tad bit large for my tastes..... I think it wither needs something else behind the drum (like a reloading guide rail maybe?) or (probably upsetting) a little bit smaller drum. Also, the fore handle is looking a mite bit flimsy when compared to the "standard" HB i'd recommend you beef that up a bit too. biggrin.png

Good work, can't wait to see some paint!

Thanks for the comments guys.

@Argent aquila - Good suggestion on the guide rail for the HB.  I may still scrap the whole thing and go with the Sternguard HB, haven't decided.  The handle still has to be greenstuffed, it's on the to-do list!

Small update:

I've purchased an airbrush (Badger Krome) but am still on the hunt for an appropriate compressor.  I'm running into shipping issues as I live in a small town and the shipping really inflates the price.  If anyone has any suggestions on reasonably priced Canadian retailers for hobby compressors I'd be appreciative.

Side note: Still hunting for cheap plug marines to use  as test models. They are harder to find than I expected.

I have the 5 man combat squad ready for paint. They are currently just blue tac'd together:

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/Taurans%20Space%20Marines/Combat%20Squad.jpg

I also have 4 of the 8 man squad together.  The special weapon marine is magnetized for convenience and there is still some green-stuffing to be done on them.  Really happy with the poses, I am aiming for a more stoic, methodical feel to this squad to offset the aggressiveness of the 5 man squad.

Next up is to build some more bases!

Cheers!

Looking good! The attention to detail/individuality will really shine through for the army when you get these guys done.

If you want snapfit marines to practice on, just search ebay for AOBR Marines or Dark Vengeance Marines. Loads on there, for cheap.

@MagicMan - Thanks for the kind words.  I've searched eBay for snapfit marines, I think the problem is I have a skewed idea of what "cheap" is.

Not a big update this week.  Continuing to work on the 8 man tactical squad and have the Sergeant and two bolter marines mocked up.  Still some minor things to do on them, sergeant needs a tabard and some misc. greenstuffing.  The kneeling marine will be the leader of the combat squad when played as such in bigger games.  Really happy with both the poses and bases of these 3:

Bolter Marines:

I'm looking for some input on head selection for the Sergeant.  I have two options that I like. Both convey the stern, determined look I'm going for with the squad.

Option 1:

Option 2:

As I continue to build the army I am going to try and develop some background for them.  For now I'll aim to have it ready for when painted photo's begin to materialize.

Cheers!

All the posing is looking excellent!  And I'd go for option 1 on the sergeant.  He looks a lot more intent, and therefore intimidating.

Agreed. Also, I absolutely love that flamethrower. That has to be a strong contender for "fav special weapon conversion I've seen on these boards" and it has a lot of good competition. The sheer level of detail is terrific, and the result looks great.

Thanks for all the nice words guys!

I'm glad the posing and flamer conversion is going over well.  Looks like the Sternguard head wins over the Thunderwolf one.  Not hard to argue, the sculpt is excellent!

@The_Chaplain: I wish I could tell you what the shoulder pad is from.  A friend had it in his bits box and said I could have it.  All I know is it is off a Forgeworld model with a jump pack and lightning claws.

Update time:

This is a good feeling as I'm sure everyone else can attest to:

Finished off the to do on the first two squads.  They're going on the back burner until the rest of my painting equipment arrives.  I ordered some more paints, airbrush thinner and cleaner and the last thing is a compressor.  I have it picked out, just waiting for it to be in stock.

Here are some picks of the last couple guys and the squad as a whole.  With my initial 500 point list I will play it as an 8 man squad with a special weapon but I made a full 10 man squad for use in a 1000 point army.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/Taurans%20Space%20Marines/20150321_184205.jpghttp://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/Taurans%20Space%20Marines/20150321_184216.jpghttp://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/Taurans%20Space%20Marines/20150321_184305.jpg

I wasn't happy with the drum fed Heavy Bolter so I converted a scout Heavy Bolter. It's a bit smaller and in my opinion fits better in a squad that could be asked to get up and redeploy regularly.

Next thing on the workbench is the Librarian.  I have the general pose and bits down.  I'd love some ideas on what to use for shoulderpads though.  I want to have the typical horned skull librarian pad, but don't know where I'd find one outside of the new plastic kit.

Here's an idea of the bits going into this guy:

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/Taurans%20Space%20Marines/20150321_193111.jpg

The plan is to have a 60mm display base with a gaming base magnetised to it.

To close things off, here's a pic of my workspace:

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/Taurans%20Space%20Marines/20150321_185109.jpg

It is a piece of plywood laid across an old bookshelf and dresser.  Not pretty, but does the trick (The milk crate is a perfect footrest)!

Cheers!

I really like what you've done so far. Great conversions and lots of character.

I'd suggest adding a little wear and tear to the banners on your sergeants though, especially on the guy with the GS loin cloth. It's a pretty stark contrast to have one piece of cloth torn to pieces and the other one perfectly clean.

For the pads I'd look into the CSM range. The tank gunner from the vehicle accessory sprue has a horned skull that might work. The Chaos Terminators do have one pad that is a horned skull as well, might be a bit big though.

But since you seem to have a solid handle on sculpting you could take any of the pads with a skull on it (standard bearer or crux terminatus and others including the chaos range again) and sculpt horns on that as well.
