Deathwatch - 19/06/21 - Star Dragon & Blackshield dread

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, as some of you know, I have painted the odd Deathwatch marine here and there over the last couple of years when I want to do something a little different to my Crimson Tears. Having just completed another, I figured it was time to get the finished work its own thread. Here's the newby:

Here's a 5 man kill team I did last Summer/early Autumn:

Well, thanks for looking. Hope you enjoyed what you saw.

So, apparently I had too many pictures in the first post, so here are the two Sons of Dorn that were meant to be up there. They're older than the others with the Black Templar being the oldest of all my Deathwatch. There was quite a gap between painting him and my next attempt, hence some aspects of his scheme are quite different (lighter grey highlight and different weapon colour for a start) and he's generally a bit untidier as my painting was a little worse than it is now.

Crimson Fist:

Black Templar:

To finish here's a group shot of the 5 man Kill team plus individual shots of the Minotaur that also wouldn't fit in the opening post:

Just great this is how I picture having a DW team should look. Each remains clearly Deathwatch but with chapter personality showing through.

I thought that all DW marines have one silver arm, am I mistaken or is this artistic license?

Wow man, these are really beautifully done.  Nice job!

I know there are plenty of ways to do the MK8 collar, but how did you do it on the Minotaur?  It looks like it has a lower profile which I like.

Your painting is preternaturally clean. You must have the steadiness of a machine. For some reason I'm really keen on the leather of the Minotaur's sidearm holster, it just looks very realistic.

Thanks, man. Wish I did, but it's just patience and touch ups (and possibly a touch of OCD about line highlights being as straight as possible...).

Thanks a lot, that's exactly what I was going for. I figure they rock up to Deathwatch service wearing the same armour they let the Chapter with so their iconography would be present, it would just have to be repainted like the rest of the suit and they'd attach/wear various accoutrements in order to maintain their sense of connection with their parent chapter.

The two whose arms are black is actually just the result of me being dopey and forgetting what I was painting. My DIY chapter have parts of their armour black, so I guess autopilot just took over and I highlighted the arms like normal, attached them and carried on with the rest of the model. To be honest I hadn't even realised I'd done it on the Space Wolf! But, let's go with artistic license, it sounds much less incompetent.

Cheers! I wish I could take credit for that part of the model, but it's actually just the Mk. 8 torso from the recent SM tactical kit.

Absolutely fantastic work, each model has it's own distinct character and lots of interesting details and subtle conversions worked in, really great job. Deathwatch are awesome when given this level of care and attention, they are all distinct individuals but also come together nicely as units.

Great stuff - love all the little details such as the flames on the Salamander's grill.

Thanks, man. The opportunity to paint all the little extra bits is primarily why I like stepping aside to do the DW every now and then, helps to broaden the palette.

Cheers, glad that's how they come accross. I do whatever I can to the best of my current ability, no sense in half-assing it, so it's nice to get such positive feedback on the effort.

Beautifully done!

Q: Have you used in a battle? I plan on making a squad for them and as wondering how they perform.

Thank you, unfortunately I can't help with battlefield performance. Due to various factors I'm strictly a modelling and painting kind of guy. If I ever were to use them in  battle it would be as Sternguard  (special ammo seems very Deathwatch) and/or tactical marines with Imperial Fists (re-roll 1's with bolt weapons iirc) or Raptors chapter tactics (rending bolters) to reflect their improved training.

Really nice work. Hmm. As if I don't have enough to be doing, now I'm thinking about DW.

Thanks. I'd say follow your creative intuition and go for it, they're a lot of fun and you don't have to do many.

I love these! How do you do your black? It's wonderfully matte yet just the right amount of hilights! I must know

Cheers. The black is (mercifully) pretty straight forward, it's Army Painter Matt Black with Vallejo Model Colour German Grey edge highlights.

It's a nice paint, though, despite the name, it's not as matte as a couple of others out there. Reaper's Pure Black, which I own, gives an even more matte finish and I'm guessing whatever Scale 75 have to offer would do so too as their entire range is super, super matte.  Army Painter requires a lot less thinning than Reaper and Scale 75 in my experience. Depends what you're after, I guess.

Awesome work on these DW!  The paint lines are amazingly clean and the conversions are subtle enough to keep the theme going but still put the character of each chapter in the forefront.  Personal favorite is the Blood Angel (obviously), but they're all awesome.

Any chance you'd try out a Deathwatch Dreadnought or Rhino?

These are very well painted mini's. Are you working on doing one DW from each chapter?

Thanks a bunch. I am planning quite a few Deathwatch, but not one from every chapter! The pads are too damned tricky to source in significant numbers, if nothing else.

What an amazing squad, they look great! How did you do that little patch of scaled skin on the salamander marine?

Cheers. The scales were (iirc, it was a little while ago now) a base of Vallejo Game Colour Yellow Olive, mix this 50/50 with VGC Heavy Grey (which, for some reason is actually a fairly light green camo), heavy dry brush of VGC Heavy Grey, mix a little VGC Bonewhite (or any bone colour really) so that you get a highlight that's not too sharp and give that a quick dry-brush.

Great looking Executioner! How did you do the chapter symbol on the right shoulder pad? It looks amazing.

Thank you very much, do you mean modelling-wise or painting-wise. The former's easy, I bought a HH Imperial Fists Phalanx Warder's pad! Painting, I'm not entirely sure, I did it without thinking really. I know I started with a base of Reaper Master Series Deep Red and then I would have added increasing amounts of a pale red, so probably Vallejo Model Colour Flat Red or Reaper Brilliant Red. Plus a touch of Vallejo Game Colour Ghosty Grey to get an ever so slightly pink edge highlight

Thanks a lot and you've described exactly what I was going for. He's one of my favourites, too, as the blood drop was an experiment in finding a different way to do gems and I think it came out really well in a colour that I adore. Funny you should mention that, I do have plans for a heavy bolter mortis Dreadnought (it's purchased, I just need to get around to it at some point) and have some Inquisition Rhino doors for future use. So, keep your eyes peeled! I've got a few more marines planned before that happens, though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Another marine begins his service:

It wasn't until I'd finished painting the shoulderpad that it occurred to me his parent chapter was on the opposite side of the Badab schism to the previous recruit. Things could get interesting in the field...

Brother Tancred - the scales are molded on to the whole torso, it's from the FW torsos pack, I wish I could sculpt that well!

Vel'Cona - thanks for saying so, yep it'll be a little wait, but it will get done.

Bloodbath - thank you very much, too kind.
