New, Girl, & Blood Angels

Hi everyone! My name is Barby. I walked into a GW store at the end of 5th edition & saw "The Sanguinor" model & fell in love. I then decided I must play that model which lead to me buying Sanguinary Guards & ultimately to playing & being loyal to Blood Angels. I played for a few months (over the summer) & then stopped. I just recently started back up again (In February). In my return, I decided to buy the Deathstorm box, another box of Sanguinary Guards, the Librarian in Terminator Armor, & an Imperial Knight. I don't own a lot & don't want to over spend but i do need some advice. I own no tanks, 1 Storm Raven, no Drop Pods, no Bike, etc. I can post a list later. I was wondering what are some must haves & auto includes in a Blood Angels army nowadays. I also wanted to make some connections with South Florida Broward County players. See where they play & get some games in. Hope you guys can help.

Thank you,

Welcome to the Bolter and Chainsword!

The Blood Angels forum is the place to go for the knowledge you seek, with regular posts regarding all the subtle nuances with how to play our beloved army. To a degree, the BA Resource Thread is also of use but this is slowly going through a revamp as whilst a lot of it is still applicable today, it was composed with the fifth edition book (and ruleset) in mind.

For BA list help, you can post here and whilst the traffic in army list subfora can be light, you will find valuable insights there too.

As for must haves and auto includes, that one is more tricky as it depends on how you wish to play. For example, there's no point in us suggesting a null deploy Drop Pod force if you can't stand Drop Pods. From what you already have, the Stormraven is a great unit and a staple in many lists and an Imperial Knight compliments almost anything (for what it's worth, we do melta weapons rather well so the battle cannon variant would be the preferred choice - nothing stops you from magnetising each weapon and finding out which will work best for you). Your Sanguinary Guard will need assistance and a Sanguinary Priest with a jump pack is an ideal choice (your Sanguinor could even fill this roll for the time being). Alternatively, keep it small and have other jump units shield them.

From the Deathstorm box if you wish to use the models as they are in the included dataslates, then they must be fielded exactly in that way. Many feel this makes the Death Company and the Death Company Dreadnought over-costed so it may be worth putting them together differently - in the case of the Dreadnought, there are many positive things to be said for the other variants (the Furioso and the Furioso Librarian). Other than that, you will need some Troop choices so purchasing either a combat Scout, sniper Scout or a BA/SM Tactical box would be a good purchase.

First off, welcome to the Bolter and Chainsword. smile.png

You'll want the new codex, if you haven't already got it. Unfortunately, running Sanguinary Guard as troops is no longer an option, so you'll need some troops, unless you are going unbound. Both the death company units in the deathstorm box are troop choices, so these can be used. Alternatively consider tactical or scout squads. Common ways of running them are 5 man tac squads in a drop pod with a heavy flamer, or a min scout squad to keep the troop tax low. You can max out the squads, and give the tac squads the appropriate weapons loadout such as combi flamer, flamer and heavy flamer.

From popular consensus, three good units (I struggle to say best, as that's fairly subjective) are Dante, who is a majestic beatstick and Lord of War choice, bikers with grav and combi grav for murdering anything with a 2+ save and min assault squads in drop pods with maxed special weapons and either a combi weapon or a gunslinging serg.

Sang guard are much cheaper, and can be taken in units of up to 10, which is awesome. Consider a Sang priest to babysit them. Stormravens are still good, but their missiles took a slight nerf in that they are now ap2 methinks instead of ap1.

AFAIK, Baals have fallen out of favour now that they are heavy support and may have lost scout? Melta attack bikes are now slightly more expensive, but still a good investment, I feel.

What style of army are you going for? How competitive are you? Do you prefer fluff over a tourni list?

If you have any more questions, someone here will be happy to help.

Hope this is useful.

Hi Dallo! Thank you for your advice. Yes I did pick up the new codex & the Deathstorm box that came with models & a rulebook. I was definitely considering a Sanguinary Priest. I guess I must get it now. LOL! I want to be somewhat competitive. I don't want a 13 Drop Pod list but I don't want to insta die either. A good middle leaning towards the competitive side in which i don't have to invst TOO much money.

Welcome to the B+C!

Thank you Jamesl!

Hail and welcome to B&C, sister! As some of the answers have been comprehensive enough already, I'll avoid rambling on. Suffice to say, the Blood Angel community will assist and acclimatise you as best they can and should you need any help, then the residing Mods in the BA subforum (such as JamesI) are more than capable.

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD G- err Emperor!

Always glad to see another Baalite :) what will you paint your army as if you haven't already? I did mine as Flesh Tearers way back in 5th and they finally got some new formations and a data slate, so I'd recommend checking that out.

You can still theoretically run Sanguinary Gaurd as your main guys, but then they'd be under the unbound army restrictions.
