Rebirth (Nick Kyme) - spoiler request

Recommended Posts

So, I looked at this on Lexicanum earlier, but would like to know more, because.. well, I want to know if its just bad writing, or if the book itself reveals something other than a complete destruction of Sororitas fluff;

Expecting pre-arranged reinforcements from the entirety of the deployed Sisters of Battle war-host, the assault force was ambushed and repelled with great losses to the Salamanders and their Cadian allies. Only timely intervention by a small force of Seraphim (Who had disobeyed Canoness Angerer's orders to abandon the Imperial strike force and instead reinforce her in following an ulterior motive[1f]), saved the remaining Imperial forces from an outright massacre.

So... we have a Canoness of the Ebon Chalice, betraying the Imperial forces sent to defend her Cardinal World? To support her ulterior motives?

Is there anyone who can enlighten me as to what the heck's going on here?

If I remember correctly, she's trying to cover up the existence of Revina, the mutant, psyker Sister (and her own blood sister) the Order have had locked in a dungeon for decades. Revina has turned to Chaos and her new allies, led by a daemon prince who identifies himself as once having been a Luna Wolf, kill the Canoness at the end.

I don't think betraying the Salamanders was the point. She just wanted the Seraphim supporting her in hunting Revina.

Mutant. Psyker. Chaos. Battle Sister.

What.

Well there was at least one Chaos corrupted Sister of Battle IIRC.

It's the mutant part that's confusing. Did she mutate from the chaos corruption? Or was she always a mutant and were all of her superiors blind and thus unaware of her mutations until she became a Sister.

Psykers are mutants, I don't recall if anything physical is ever specified or if that's the only reason she's referred to as such.

I think the implication is she was kept alive because she's a seer, and she turned to Chaos after decades of being locked up.

Obviously nothing was apparent when she entered the Order. In the beginning she was no more corrupt than any of the other Warp entity-worshipping, Acts of Warp Entity-invoking god-botherers.

Mutant. Psyker. Chaos. Battle Sister.

What.

Don't see a problem with this. A sister develops psychic ability, or awakens recessive psychic genes or whatever (all psykers are considered mutants), then is unable to deal with said evolutions and succumbs to the insanity of the warp.

This has probably happened more than once, given the size of the galaxy. What's the issue here?

She was never a Sister of Battle to my recollection. She was future Canoness Revina's real life sister, and when her abilities manifested while they were in the Schola Progenium, Revina turned her in. I don't remember her being locked up by the Order, but I could be forgetting that part. I assumed she was taken onto a Black Ship or whatever they do when they find a Schola student is a psyker, and she was later kidnapped by the Chaos Marines that are using her.

Battle Sisters do not turn to chaos. They are incorruptible. On top of that, they are genetically screened before admittance to the Orders - latent psyker powers would make them ineligible for the Sororitas. You'd have to expose them to massive amounts of warpstuff post-graduation and hope they got the right mutation to ever end up with a psionic Sister, and even then she'd be begging for her squad to purge her.

That makes more sense. Still, its an atrocious plot.

That's not actually a thing, is it?

Please tell me there isn't a source that actually declares them incorruptible.

It's like one line in their original codex, that Furyou Mikou has taken to be the inviolate, objective truth for 18 years despite all the direct evidence to the contrary. Sisters can fall.

She was never a Sister of Battle to my recollection.

Later, when the three sisters had been inducted to the Order of the Ebon Chalice as neophytes, Revina had lost the penitent cup she used for prayer and ablution.

I don't remember her being locked up by the Order, but I could be forgetting that part. I assumed she was taken onto a Black Ship or whatever they do when they find a Schola student is a psyker, and she was later kidnapped by the Chaos Marines that are using her.

Laevenius rose with her, whilst Revina languished in a cell, her existence known only to a few, a dirty secret the order kept at its heart.

Sisters fall just like anybody else.

Sisters fell under the sway of a chaos psyker in one of the Cain books, and Daemonifuge has a corrupted sister, and from memory the 2nd Ed Sister of Battle Codex has a sister fall to slaanesh.

those are just three examples, and if the sisters were more popular and actually had stuff written about them, there would be more.

There is only one incorruptible force of Imperials, and its the Grey Knights. ANYBODY else can fall.

Yeah, Space Marines are genetically and psychically screened and then psycho-indoctrinated, and yet not only do some of them turn, but the Alpha Legion has actually been able to get hypnotized sleeper agents inducted into a Space Marine chapter all Manchurian Candidate style. Oh and Typhon/Typhus was a latent psyker that got past his fervently anti-psyker Legion's genetic screening. Sisters are only human, and the relative lack of corrupted Sisters in fluff has to do with

a.) relative lack of Sister fluff period; and b.) no Chaos Sisters of Battle army to base such fluff around as there is with a Chaos Space Marines army.

Plus the effort/reward ratio for corrupting a Sister is awful, it's much harder to do than with a Guard Officer or Planetary Governor, and then all you get is--a regular human. If you're gonna try that hard, might as well go full monty and corrupt a Space Marine. Though Slaanesh would probably do it just for the irony.
