Loddfafnir113's WIP log - With added ETL goodness

Recommended Posts

Evening good folks of the B&C. This is going to my (probably sporadically updated) progress log of my DIY Raven Guard Successor chapter the Ravens Revenant. This is my first project after coming back to the hobby from a very long absence, so im pretty much re-learning how to paint whilst also trying to expand past my old methods of drowning models in washes followed by a frenzied drybrushing. Comments and criticisms are welcomed (as will become aware, photography is not my strong suit im afraid).

Sergeant, 4th Company, 1st tactical squad:

Going to do an extra highlight just to bring the armour out a bit, might try and brighten the green up a bit too but the basics are all there. This is also my first time attempting a snow base which was moderatley successful.

Tactical Marine, 4th Company, 1st tactical:

1st Tactical Squad, 4th Company:

A fair bit still to go but they're coming together now.

Quick in progress shot of my captain with powerfist and primarchs wrath. Absolutely love the armour and posing of this chap, but the bolter arm just don't seem quite right to me now. May swap it out for one with a slight bend in the elbow in the future. Next for him however is a greenstuff hair do.

I really like you're chapter colors

Always wondered how Space Marines looked in muted brown and it looks sweet

I do think they could do with some more highlights, but it's a promising start.

As for the captains pose, keep it i'm diggin' the "I'm gonna shoot you're head off" pose

Looking forward to more

Cheers,

Stepper

Thank you very much gentlemen! The brown's been challenging to get how I want, think i'm happy enough at the moment though so will stop experimenting till I get past the first squad at least.

And on that note I managed to get some time to do a bit more work on them.

Finished off the sergeant with an extra highlight.

And got another three members of the squad finished off. Basic tacticals:

Plasma gunner, first time i've done something like this on the plasma gun and very pleased with the result:

And the squad as it stands so far:

The next update shall be the whole squad finished, hopefully soon.

Took a while but got the squad finished (minus one member my lad wanted to help me build so he missed the undercoat and basecoat, hes getting done with the next batch). For my first attempt at proper highlighting im quite happy, bit rough but just got to get the practice in now. I did manage to get the free hand chapter badges pretty closely matched so i'm quite proud of that.

If anyones interested in the squad markings, the green is the company designation (4th company). The grey on the left knee denotes the squad number, solid grey is for squad one and this is going to be halved/quatered with brown for each successive squad. Even though I free handed the chapter badge on the test models I did I just could not get the proportions of the tactical arrow right so I decided to simplify it to a solid vertical line which I think actually suits them better as I was going for a very understated look to their armour. I'm going to do the same simplification to the devestator and assault squads, which will be a solid triangle and cross respectivley.

More pics under the hidden button.

Very nice Lodd, you don't see many Chapters with brown as their primary colours and you've got a lovely subtle tone here. The iron trim and sage weapon casings compliement the brown nicely while the red sergeant helms really stand out. :)

Into the ETL we go! First (and probably only) vow is for a captain, command squad and devastator squad. Got all the assembly work done so here we are. The command squad is the most ambitious project I've done in a long time and really happy with how they turned out.

Thank ye kindly. The lack of brown marines out there was actually part of the reason for the choice of colour :P it took a while to get it how I wanted it without turning reddish but I'm happy with the result. I was originally planning to do the third company but as you say the green casings just looked much more complimentary when I did test minis.

Spiffy use of the SP wings!  What did you use to convert the Captain's head/hair?

The days I wasted trawling the net for storm shields I liked till I found those :P the head is from the plastic space marine commander (hands down my favourite space marine head sculpt) and the hair is green stuff.
