Space Hulk - First Edition

Well with it being the Bank Holiday weekend my girlfriend kindly agreed to play a few games of toy soldiers with me. Frankly I couldn't be arsed to set up the scenery for a game of 40k so I thought I'd break out the old classic SPACE HULK which never really gets played as much as it should!

I had actually forgotten how much fun this game really is, and how quick it is to play! The feel of the old black and white rulebooks was particularly nostalgic

I was particularly pleased that after all these years I have finally finished painting my genestealers and so could play with fully painted forces on both sides!

We played through the first three missions from the booklet over the course of the weekend and had an absolutely great time!

I let her be the marine player throughout and overall she won every game, but you know what...I had such a great time I didn't really care about winning or losing! What an awesome game!

I'll definitely be playing it again in the future! I have done a much fuller battle report with loads more pictures on my blog:

Please feel free to stop by and a have a look!

Well as an update my girlfriend and I spent the weekend working through the final few missions of the initial Space Hulk Campaign and it was great fun (again)

That being said I have to say I feel the middle missions from the initial campaign are exceptionally hard for the Marine player...nigh on impossible in fact!

However I reckon that this issue could possibly be re-balanced by using the variant army lists from the Deathwing expansion, assault cannons look like they could be really potent in those dark corridors...

As ever there are more photos and further details on my blog:

I remember reading through this on your blog. Great stuff and lovely memories. I had to fish all my Space Hulk sets out recently in order to plan the next themed 30k game we are playing. I always forget the striking detail of the illustrations on the tiles. Awesome stuff.

Cheers mate! I'm thinking of using those old termies in my 30k salamanders army! I think I'll use them for the firedrakes variants!

You know I was thinking the same thing when I was looking at those board tiles! GW did put so much effort into those playing pieces! Such nostalgia!

Space Hulk came out when I was 6. When I was 6 my brother used to babysit me at weekends and force me to watch horror movies, one of which was Alien.

Scared the squits out of me, but not wanting to lose face I told mm brother it was the best thing ever, despite giving me nightmares. The next week he shows up with Space Hulk. 'Just like Alien' he said. 'Yay' I said, crying inside.

What a game it was. Happy daze.

I missed out on every edition of space hulk :( had to make do with the digital version...but it just doesn't have the feel. Still waiting for some set to go onto ebay one day, but I might certainly br waiting a while.

Nice to see the original is worth getting though, but I have to say those old termies don't actually look that...old (no offence intended).

The game set on a hive ship was Advanced Space Crusade, which featured teams of scouts taking on tyranid warriors - similar to Space Hulk (modular game board for starters), but different game family.

Librarians appeared in the Genestealer supplement for Space Hulk, which also featured more hybrids and new board sections, but was still set in a hulk, not a hive ship - I'm not sure that the stealer/tyranid connection was explicit back then.
