SMM's Horus Heresy WIP Armies - Iron Warriors 1000 points

Been a while since any updates here friends and uhhhh, not one with any more boys in blue.

 

The good news is some more custodes stuff!

 

First up is a group shot of everything built so far: 5 Custodes, 3 Sentinels and 1 Caladius. I've still got two unbuilt models that I've been thinking of making a 6th Custode and a Banner, but I'll hold off until Inferno for that. You can also see that I changed the spears blades from silver to a dark blue. Speaking of dark blue, there's some marine bits scattered across the bases, but are they the victims of the Ten Thousand or are they being supported? Who knows.

The Caladius is a really nice model, but it's extremely front heavy and I couldn't really get the pods to not dip down. I went with black instead of red for the secondary colour as I found it contrasted a whole lot better and really helped to break up the model.

And a quick double post to cram the rest of the pics in.

 

I managed to get some poses I was satisfied with for the Sentinel Guard; holding the line with shields raised, no swords up in the air or planted in the ground for reasons unknown. I am worried about how much variation you can get out of the kit, though I suppose I should be glad that they aren't mono-pose. I deliberately didn't do the ornamentation on their swords as 1. I was trying to contrast the armour 2. It helps them look smaller with the lack of depth and I have to say they don't look so wonky anymore, IMO of course.

 

One thing I have to start doing is painting the heads separately so I can do the eyes properly if I get more, but other than that I'm really pleased with how they paint up.

I really like the contrast, but I love that Custodes justify anything if its to protect the emperor and really aren't paladins (despite appearance)

Custodes look great & the black is a nice touch.

 

I believe in lore terms the custodes swapped the red to black as a sign of mourning the Emperor after the Heresy when he was interrred on the golden throne.

Thanks! And yea, IIRC they also took off their shirts too lol. But aside from that, I think black is also considered the Emperor's colour (chaplains wear it and sigi changed his armour to black in the old fluff on becoming the champion).

Well I built up two guys, just more of the dark blue, homicidal variant :P

 

They're Consuls, a Chaplain and Praevian, so I can stop using a terror marine headsman as either.

Sadly I ran out of the skull-helms from the upgrade kit for the chaplain, but in hindsight, there's not a whole lot I could do to differentiate from the other models with the same head. This one can get a terror symbol on the face and maybe some more freehand to really sell the fact that he's an HQ. The lightning claw just goes along to make him look more brutal and different from the bunch of chainglaive wielding dudes. The chains and meat, mk III chest and planned terror symbol is to push a connection to the Terror Marines since Chaplains cause Fear in 30k, I like to think that he's overseeing them to make sure they're inspiring fear for the purpose of deterrence, instead of just the thrill of it.

The Praevian I tried to go with a different vibe. He's very clean and missing any chains or flayed skin or such things, reflecting the more mechanical nature of his duties. Because he's there more to mark targets than really anything else, I opted for him not to be brandishing a melee weapon and instead pointing towards foes with the finger of authority. I went for a Kataphron head for his cortex controller, and the weird thing on his backpack will be the designator, just needs to be painted up to not look weird.

Praevian gets the right vibe across very well.

Same goes for the Chaplain, and it makes a lot of sense to use that helmet really.

Almost gives him a certain batty je ne sais quois that reminds me of something I've seen silhouetted a thousand times in comic books, but I can't quite put my finger on where I've seen it ;)

So long time with no updates; between Breath of the Wild, AoS and having mechanicum bots go rogue on me I've kind of not built or painted anything for this thread in a while. I've also started to amass an amount of Custodes that I'll be making a new thread in the WIP section after this last post today, but boy is it cool.

 

The Queen and her Knights

 

I was pretty hesitant about the assembly at first, as I've never had a fun time putting contemptors together; parts get put on backwards, the stance is boring, anatomy is unrealistic, the legs are a  to get glued, they always seem to angle pivot to the left, etc...Thankfully I managed to escape my previous contemptor assembly shortcomings, though I suspect that its due to the slightly less freedom in poseability the legs have on the Achillus (something that's made up for by the arms). Building them I knew I wanted different poses, with one left facing and one right, and while the the dread aiming with his wrist-destructor came out exactly how I wanted it, the other evolved a bit as I went. Originally I had wanted his spear in both hands with him advancing, but I had miscalculated while building his right arm and hard to scrap it; I actually prefer the end result far more than what I was trying to accomplish.

 

The Sister is my very plain and/or boring counts-as Krole until I either use a Greyfax as the basis after I saw an awesome conversion by Charlo or they release a real version. Shouldn't be too much confusion since she's got the sword, an imperious pose, and is the only Sister in the list.

 

Painting wise, I think I'll keep the dreads done in the style of my infantry, meaning lots of gold, blue-black spears and such, but I'll break it up with black shoulder pads and gun casings. Not too sure what I'll do for the wrist-destructor's energy colour, so suggestions are welcome!

 

The Sisters of Silence scheme I'm going to go with is a bright silver for the armour, blue cloth, purple gems and black for the hair. I want them contrasting with the Custodes as much as possible, while the black should be a nice common point.

 

Finally for Newtoncain, the vidoe finally got uploaded, here you go buddy.

So I changed my mind and decided against making multiple WIP threads.

 

I shamelessly stole  Charlo's conversion based on Greyfax and am using the model as a counts-as Jenetia Krole until she gets a model. Was originally going to do the point-down sword arm but the shoulders kind of clashed and the connection points looked like too much of a headache. Instead, I cut the gun hand off, transplanted the other one handed sword hand and put the biggest sword form the kit on. It looks really suitable for the zweihander she's supposed to have, compared to the rather small point-down sword. 

 

 

It was also my first attempt at sculpting greenstuff on this model. Tried to do some fur over the backpack connection area to bring her in line with the other models and I think it turned out really well for a first attempt. I did go back and trim it down after the photos were taken, as I felt like it extended a tad too much.

 

 

Making a new Krole model didn't stop me from painting the other one though! I went through with a high contrast silver, using blacks and blues for the cloth. Hands need to be painted, as well as the gold trim on the tabard and the sword, but the model is coming along nicely. I might just leave the eyes pure black for that "soulless" look, especially since the face detail is rather shallow.

 

 

Comparison shot for the two; I was worried that the Greyfax model was going to be a bit smaller than the Sisters of Silence since they were "truescaled" a bit by GW, but the height really matches well. Must be the heels :P

 

 

And finally the contemptors. So far the gold is done up to the point of black lining with warplock bronze. I'm still trying to decide how dark of a silver I should do for the non-armour, as well as where to put black to break them up.

Amazing idea to use Greyfax - whoever inspired you to do that is a handsome genius for sure... ;)

 

She's looking great though, love the sword you used. Your scheme seems similar to mine too - but more blue than purple though.
