SMM's Horus Heresy WIP Armies - Iron Warriors 1000 points

So not a whole lot of work done as I've gotten a couple of games in, but first of all I got the Terror Squad completely finished (bases may be redone later though...). Because I'm kind of bad at photography and have no light box and limited room to take pictures here's a shot of the last 5 with their volkites instead of the entire squad:

The picture looks fairly grainy and sadly ruins some of the detail as I turned off the auto enhance as it made the pictures too dark, but its really just them with their guns so its not too big of a loss.

 

On top of officially finishing the first Terror Squad I also finished the first of my power fist Cataphractii! He took a lot longer due to me just not knowing what I wanted to paint on him and how much freehand to do. I eventually settled on a fairly limited amount of lightning with the VIII on his right shoulder and a 1 on his right knee to indicate squad (as I'll have 3 squads total); the only problem by the end was the massed amounts of blue and bronze, so I broke it up by changing the knee plates and sub-pauldrons to black. For the powerfist, since I always preferred the concept of a hydraulic powered fist over an energy field, I painted it to look like he'd just crushed someone's face and the blood is now seeping out of the clenched fist:

From the picture, I thought the terminator had dried blood on his power fist. And I am with you that power fists are massive hydraulic weapons, rather than being coated in a disruption field.

 the blood has to do with my fairly bad pictures and the way I paint my blood; I mix khorne red with regal blue to give it a deep, almost mauve colour.  Because I apply it fairly watered down it tends to look even darker, usually looking either bloodstained or fresh depending on how much water I used. In all honesty its not really a problem as long as it looks decently natural and not over the top

Lighting is thankfully better than the other day and I'm also getting the knack of painting the cataphractii armour (first one took probably two and a half times longer to paint than the second and third put together).

 

First guy up has a chainfist and will be the seargent for this squad; he's assembled with all the seargent bits and is the only one without a powerfist so there shouldn't be any confusion. I tried to make the chainblade part weathered and bloody as he uses it quite a bit , but it obscures the hazard stripes perhaps too much:

The second guy also has the "bolter down" pose that you get and is looking around for more victims. I was actually very sparse on the freehand on this model; the notable parts being the lightning on the gorget and the three kill markings on his right vambrace. I also brown washed the blood on his fist to give it a slightly more dry appearance:

Looking good. I like the dark blue, imagine them coming out the darkness. You would see the lightening and the bronze before the bulk of the figure truly appeared.

Thanks Hydra :) The dark blue is really just a result of me trying to keep my scheme as simple and time saving as possible. I also thought the terminator's sheer size and silhouette would be enough to convey fear, hence the lack of any trophies (plus they dont actually cause fear :P ).

First Cataphractii squad done, with 4 power fists and one chain fist on the seargent. Really pleased with how they turned out, though they do take a bit longer than the average Terror marine. One thing I have to do is add blood to the last 2 fists and the studs on their leather (I forgot  ).

 

As always with my cataphractii they have the VIII on their right shoulder and lightning on their left and top and for these guys, the marking of first squad on their right knee

So far I have it assembled all the way except for the fingers too. However the crotch/hip piece is misaligned and really bothers me so I'm going to rip it apart and fix it. Don't remember my relic contemptor being so frustrating

It's been a while since my last update, but I've been putting my time to good use. I finally finished the Sicaran, minus the lascannon sponsons as I ran out of black wash. The model was a lot of fun to paint, but I wish I was better with battle damage to really do it justice.
 
I also tried doing flayed skin for the first time using Augustus b'Raass's method here and i think it turned out decently for a first attempt.

 

Sadly because of the running out of wash and lack of sponsons I can't list this as finished yet for ETL

Yea the model is a tad large for a fighter, but at least its comparable in size to a valkyrie or storm raven. It also helps that most of the bulk comes from its engines (its agile for a reason! ) and nose (those two twin linked las need some place for the wiring )

 

I had a game against my buddy's elysians + warhound titan at 2k; the xiphon killed the command squad's valkyrie and put 4 hull points on the warhound so i'm super satisfied with it

I've decided to do all non-volkite weapon/energy effects purple as it ties in with the praetors sword and is less harsh of a contrast compared to red.
