Skitarii Colourschemes!

Question guys, I was thinking of doing Blue robes with red armour for my Skitarii, now I'm wondering whether I should do red robes with blue armour, the blue robes would be easier to do.

What shade of blue are we talking, here?  I'm assuming you're keeping the red similar to the studio scheme, but that's important too.  Are you still doing some metallics?

It's a deep cobalt blue like the blue on my knight. There will be some metallics, it's just the flat armour surfaces I'm thinking of being red.

It was 4th ed when gryphonne got eaten. Didn't know it was so close to deliverance though.

Yea, it was almost right in the same place! now I guess it could still have lightyears between the two. I kinda want a book like Helsreach for the battle of gryphonne that includes ravenguard

It is the perfect setting for a new forgeworld 40k campaign book. Titans, Skitarii, Raven Guard, 40k Taghmata units, Knights.... especially when there's the Warlord Titan coming! And would make a great novel or short series of novels too.

Nice job, Dusktiger! It's pretty similar to my scheme, actually, though I went for red inside the robes and kept the metallic armor plates. Have you considered trying out a glow effect for the gun/backpack? happy.png

Really nice stuff there!!.,Yours look way better than mine sad.png i painted up a Ryza vanguard last night and sat there looking at it for like (30mins on my chrono)...and something seemed not right with the Orange and the metal.. mellow.png ...Not sure?,it may have been my orange but it put me off, they look great on paper(and yours too) but in real life im not a fan anymore...which is sad cause i really wanted orange in there, alas it is not to be...i repainted his robe in Forge world -"Metalica" Bone/white and i must say im really happier now that i went that route...very old victorian/steam punkish/The Order 1866 look cool.png

look fwd to seeing others paint schemes , @ Dusktiger yours looks great too...is he finished or are you still going to highlight?....

Btw the Orange I used was simply Citadel Jokaero Orange Base. It took about 3 thin / watered down layers over primer to get it 'smooth'.

Also about Radium glow:

Before I started painting someone told me Radium glows blue so that's what I painted. Then when I was done, someone else told me Radium glows green like in watches, and I was like "Argh!". Anyway I rechecked and it is zinc sulphate that's excited by Radium that glows green in watches.

Actual Radium itself does indeed glow a light blue (but disclaimer; I am not an actual chemist, I just paint stuff).

the pic doesnt to a great job at that angle, but there is highlighting on everything but his robe. reds are actually 3 stage highlighted as well.

apart from some blue lenses via how GW does them, i havent. the rifles on these just seem like a classical wood gun with gold filligree, so i went with that. once i do my vanguard for the ETL, i'll be adding glows where i think it would look good on the rad carbines.

i have 5 vanguard with an arc rifle and plasma caliver, alpha with arc pistol and taser goad.

5 rangers with the arquebus and omnispex.

5 ruststalkers with dual blades, princeps with additional claw and spike.

5 infiltrators with swords, princeps will be my warlord with phosphoenix, and all the optional wargear his model gets wysiwyg.

a ballistari with lascannons

and once its out, i'll get an oniger as well. probably the neutron laser one.

once thats all done i'll probably expand out the squads to units of ten. stalkers i might just do 2 squads of 5 though.

@dusktiger - I can see the highlights on the model, sorry, i should have been more specific in my question - the base looks like the cracked earth needs a highlight or is the camera playing tricks on my eye's ?? ...

Of course! And here was i wondering if i should paint a glow on the radium guns or not. I must run a diagnostic on my remaining cerebral bio-matter. Of course i should.

I really have to say, the glow effect "ties the room together" on Skitarii models, especially if you're going for a darker robe color (blue, purple, grey, etc.).  Nailing down a good contrast on the glow will get a striking appearance that other model ranges just don't have; while the stock blue certainly works, I think any other strong color choice is fine as long as your Skitarii don't end up looking like casino signs or something.

In that respect, pick a wash or ink!  You can't go wrong with GW washes, but P3 and Vallejo make some very striking inks that can get a heck of an effect too!

Well where i have done plasma such as the anti-grav footrest of my Noblewoman of House Cydonia i went with a deliberately uneven layer of white then the oxide paint over that which gave me the effect i was after, of an uneven slightly nebulous glow, so i'll likely use that some more.

ah, i gotcha.  i didn't highlight the base at all.  i just followed the GW video for skitarii bases and that's it.  i did vallejo burnt cad red as a basecoat, then put on the martian ironearth overtop, and then did doombull brown for the ring.

my suggestion for others wanting this base style, is pick a really dark primer for the base. maybe even black.  that way when the ironearth dries and cracks, your primer shows through the cracks and helps the effect pop more.  i had done a test before using the red as a primer and had just done the whole base doombull brown, but that just doesnt show through the cracks at all.  it just seems like the ironearth is a solid color.  when i start the rest of the squad i might try leaving the bases black and put it over that to see if it shows up better.

Very nice, I went with Mars, my Imperial knights are house terranis, from Mars, so I wanted my mecahnicus to follow suit. Also I have grey Knights from Titan.

I have a obsession with Mars.

I originate from the UK, I thought it was funny that GW, made the infiltrators, look like the cadburys

smashed potatoes Martians

http://youtu.be/NNegXNcMOME

I decide I will make sacks of potatoes for their bases (sand bags, painted like cadburys smash potatoes), and I will place a few potatoes on the ground too.

On mine i did the red base also, but will prob go for rhinox as the base next time, I did the rim with XV-88 instead.

Then i also did xv-88 as a dry brush on the martian earth then ushabti bone as a final drybrush highlight...it makes the base pop a bit more and the cracks stand out further...will post pics tommorow after i finish my test model completely.

I'm definitely trying to work out a good drybrush for the Martian Ironearth.  I've been a fan of the cracked finish since I used Agrellan Earth on another project, but I find it really falls flat without some kind of wash/drybrush.  I'm thinking I may try a wash with Baal Red before I go into the highlights, but I'm worried that'll make the base too "bloody" looking.

The White Dwarf the week it came out suggests a light drybrush of Kindleflame
