So I'm considering assault marines... while it doesn't seem fluffy at first, touting them as sort of a "Destroyer Company" (as they'll have rad 'nades) and oufitting them with combat shields and a few power weapons + Apothecary could make them pretty nasty.

What do we think to 15 man squads? Are combat shields worth it? 45pts seems hefty for the entire squad but a 6/5++ on top of FNP will make them pretty hardy.

A fully kitted squad is however 340pts.....

They're about 50% more expensive than Tacticals (without a Rhino) but offer a bit more speed and flexibility in an infantry list - not to mention rule-of-cool based on this amazing image:

My friend, who plays night lords, always pays the shields on assault marines. And from my point of view (the man who try to kill them) are totally worthy

Regarding the shields, while I have no experience myself, some people here in the forums argue that for the points you pay, you could include more men to the squad to compensate the potential saves the shields would make. I guess the choice then boils down to either rule of cool or if you really want to reduce the size of the squad (may be useful to hide them out of sight or to avoid deepstrike complications).

That is right but I may add something.
More men will help to get the squat where you want it but Combat Shields reduce the amount of dudes you'll lose against DS2+1 on CC and THAT will help winning those combats.

Edit: Them Them Them

While assualt marines don't seem the fluffy choice(like jetbikes and bikes) we do actually get a good bonus through the reaping with them ignoring dangerous terrain. Will come in very handy.

On the more dudes Vs shields. Isn't more dudes the deathguard way. (But just decide what you want to model and think is cool
. I'm somehow trying to get a mkii squad done)

With the right shields they'll awesome.

And with RAD grenades they should be devastating.

Aye i'm swinging back and forth and using them to represent a Destoryer company... It would certainly be pretty unique on the table.

Just do it.
I myself play an Iron Warriors Assault Squad and they don't even get RAD-Grenades. Those miniatures look great and it is fun to play them, so why not?
And like you said it'd be definitely a unique Death Guard army which such a unit.
You'd be the first Death Guard hipster. ;)

You don't see Plasma Cannons too much but they're super rad. They will instill some real fear.

I've got two squads of ten, and I love them visually! I'd seen them at a previous Throne of Skulls, and thought they'd be great. Need to get them painted...

That said, I do wonder of their comparative damage output against a more specialised option (Lascannons or Missile Launchers perhaps?) - not sure on the general consensus though?

Well, first of all:
You are crazy. ;)
And second:
I guess they'll plant fear in the hearts of your enemies. Ten dudes should kill almost any unit with one volley. Of course some of them won't shoot and overheat instead, but that is a small price to pay.
I'd put a Librarien besides them so that he'll give them re-rolls but I don't know what Mortarion says about that. ;)

Haha  Well, the intention was to make sure I had enough Heavy Support Squads for the Reaping, as I never really use it as a Rite... Now, I'll be able to!

I suppose, as with Volkites or MLs (or similar, in any case), that's the intention - one volley, hope to destroy the type of target they excel at, and move on. Perhaps they offer more utility given their profile, even with any chance of overheats.

Definitely! I think that's one of the things I'm looking forward to with the Reaping: having a myriad of squads with those different weapon options means there are plenty of threats with a range of capabilities to utilise. Should also mean that there would be a large enough spread of weapons to deal with most list builds within a Heresy army.

I'm just working through possible builds for the next event I'm attending, and wondering whether Orbital Assault is the way forward at this juncture now, or to go back to my traditional Creeping Death lists. Thoughts welcome!

Orbital assault is really good, but be careful with the new augury scanner rules!

Plus deep striking heavy weapons squads is a tough one, as you can only snapshot before they become a target for the enemy.

I love the Reaping personally, with it's massed heavy weapon squads - but I also like Mortarion and Terminators... It's hard to fit it all in!

That's a good point - as that could potentially wreck any Orbital Assault list!

I'd be more inclined to go Terminator Heavy (both in terms of Deathshroud and Grave Wardens) if I did go for OA: partially, because with a Kharybdis and three Dreadclaws (as I've not yet painted the Dread Pod or other standard Drop Pods - which I'd need to do!), I'm a bit more limited with what I could reasonably throw down. Something to bear in mind in any case.

My traditional Creeping Death build involves a sort of Mortarion 'Deathstar' - but it does consume about a third of my points even at a 3k level, so it's definitely an investment. I might write a list for each and see where we get... As you say Charlo, can never fit in everything you want to!

My reaping lists pretty much always start with 2x10 tact squads, 2x5 lascannon and 2x 5 culverins. So loads scoring and long range threat for both armour and infantry. I'd love to do a orbital list. But my nightlords tick that box.
